Saving and loading setups in NASCAR Racing 2
Users could not find the Load button shown in the NASCAR Racing 2 manual, and saved setups did not appear in the menu. David Sparks traced the problem to a minimal-install bug in which the game looked for setups on the CD, so a full install was needed. Posters also complained that the spotter volume reduced other sounds, and Papyrus's Jim Sokoloff explained that the sound samples were 8-bit to support smaller machines.

To load setups, look for the description (Ace, Easy, Fast), at the top
left of the data sheet. This is a pull-down style menu, and you can
specify one of the other setups this way. Also, notice that there is
one (pull down menu) for qualifying and the race.

To load a car setup, just click on the drop-down box and select the car
setup you want. It loads the settings as soon as you've selected it. Note
that the top 2 drop-down boxes select the setup that gets loaded when you
start a qualifying or race session. If you've ever accidentally started a
race with a qualifying setup, you'll find this very useful.

I have seen the pull down menus but i'm trying
to save a setup as a different name than fast, easy
or qual. it wont let me save under any other name.
The book also shows a load command under
the setup menu, I dont see that. Also, has
anyone else noticed the rear view mirror being
half blued out. the top portion of my mirror shows
nothing but the sky and blocks out the top
half of the car behind me. AUESOME GAME!!!!!
Thanks

I can load the setups that coem with
the game.. but if I make changes.. change the name. and save it I have
no way to get the setup back (it never adds it to the drop down lists).
Also if I change the defaults for racing and qualifying it doesnt save
the default choices.. it always goes to Easy and Easy.

Click on the field
name next to the pull down. Now you can type in a new setup name and then
click on Save at the bottom of the screen.

Make sure you hit the return key after you enter the new setup name.

YES!!!! That is a great fix over N1
Some "bugs" have unfortunately carried over to N2 such as:
-cars can occupy the same space at the same time. Something Einstein would
probably like to look at.
-cars have automatic spin recovery. This of course mimics the real life
giant hydraulic powered ball bearing under the middle of the car. Ahem.
-Stomping on the brakes does NOT lock up the tires. Spinning on
acceleration is great, but they must have modeled the brakes after Volvo
ABS or something.
The only bad change, and I think this will get fixed, is the wimpy tire
squeal and soft sound.

Jeff, unfortunately, it seems if you did a minimum install of the
game this problem occurs! In order to get the load button you need to do
a full install!

Thanks, Pete. I'll try doing a full install. Fortunately, I ask Santa
for 2.1 gig hard drive for Xmas. :)
This sounds like a pretty serious flaw, however. Forcing us to use
almost 100 meg of disk space just we can load setups just doesn't cut
it, Sierra. Sounds like patch time to me. Adam?

I did a full install and I don't have a load button but you
don't need it. It takes awhile to figure it out.

TheI was able to copy my setups from my N1 track directories directly to my
N2 track directories, and they showed up in the pull down menu in N2.
'Course, now I have to figure out if my N1 setups are gonna' be any good

it for the first time, I saw Loy Allen spin in the Napa 500 and it sounded
nearly identical to the sound in the game.

I like the tire squeal too, but the sounds are way to soft. I've got
to crank up my speakers to hear everything. This is not really a
problem, except for when I exit back to Win95 all my sounds are way too
loud.

If I remember correctly, you can adjust the tire squeal sound. If it's
already at 100%, then try adjusting it down. Also, I don't have the manual,
but someone mentioned that if the spotter level is above 50%, then all the
other sounds are reduced.
Dave (davids) Sparks

Here's the deal. I have the overall volume at 100%, and I like how all
my sounds are with the spotter at 50%. The only problem is I can't
hear the spotter. If I crank up the spotter so I can hear him, all the
other sounds are reduced (not what I want). All I want to do is keep
all the sounds at the same level and independently increase the volume
of the spotter's voice. Why is this so difficult to do? Who at
Papyrus though that the slider for the spotter somehow wasn't enough
and had to implement some kind of automatic gain control?

I agree...I think Papyrus err'ed here with the spotter's voice volume. Eric's
right...when the Spotter's volume is at 50% (which the manual says puts it at
100 % compared to other sounds), he is barely audible...and then by increasing
him past 50% (which, to give the manual credit, does warn that the other
sounds will be diminshed), the overall sound gets too quiet.
Bad implementation, IMO.

But is it not true that you will not see the saved tracks on the drop
down button unless you do a full install?
I have not done the full install. I have copied car set-ups into the
various track directories, that Eric Busch put on his very nice NC2
page, and they simply don't show up in the drop down menus, regardless
of which car set I'm using. I have also saved setups in the proper
(manually correct) manner and they just aren't there....

I could tell you who did it, but it wouldn't matter, because he did the
only thing he could to make the game work... :-)
The sound samples are 8-bit (Why? Because some people only have 8-bit
cards, and because they are smaller and we are still trying to support
the smaller machines, else we get flamed for having ridiculous hardware
requirements...) In 8 bits, we don't have the resolution to be able to
distinguish speech, particularly LOUD, E***D speech such as "They're
wrecking right in front of you" and still have routine speech "green next
time by" be appropriately soft-sounding yet intelligible.
If everyone had 16 bit sound cards and 32 Meg, we could "fix" the
problem, but for now, the thing to do is adjust your speaker volume to
"UP," and use the spotter volume slider/auto-gain control until you are
happy with the results. (Or at least until you can hear the spotter the
way you want; you might still not be perfectly "happy," but your game
will work...)
