Grand Prix 2 pricing, UK costs and ITV F1 coverage

A note that Best Buy sold GP2 for $29.99 prompted UK posters to complain about paying the same number in pounds. The thread drifted into off-topic discussion of ITV taking over UK F1 coverage in 1997, adverts during races, and the future of commentator Murray Walker.

What a ripoff the UK is $29.99 in the Us 29.99 pounds in the UK since when has 1 dollar - 1 pound Rob
> What a ripoff the UK is > $29.99 in the Us > 29.99 pounds in the UK > since when has 1 dollar - 1 pound For at least the last 20 years as far as electronics/computer technology is concerned !! Even worse are the comments like "I paid $99 for my T2 - was I ripped off" when the cheapest you can get it in the UK is 120 POUNDS !! That's an even worse exchange rate. I wouldn't mind being "ripped-off" at that sort of rate ! And don't start me off on the difference in car prices between the US and UK ...... Ah, but think how much they will have to pay for a GP500 <g> Richard
Well maybe Microprose UK feels the same way and has tried to make us yanks suffer at least a bit. Both of the greatest Microprose UK releases XCOM (UFO) and GP2 were released here in the U.S. a few weeks later than in Europe, driving us eager yank customers crazy with anticipation, not to mention the fact that the US version of GP2 has a black and white picture manual. While I'm at it you guys at least get decent F1 coverage with Murray on the BBC, and can enjoy a pint of decent beer ale while watching. We instead have to get up at 4:00am to watch the races on pay TV ESPN, and if we are sick enough to want a pint at that hour have to make due with a watery can of Budweiser. ;-) Life is never fair <G>. Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.
Basically, were getting ripped off every day. Everything from complete systems, to RAM and games, over here, we seem to pay a percentage over the top. Even if the ***y thing is made here like GP2, from Microprose UK. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Southend, Essex. I wonder if it would be cheaper ordering a T2 direct from the states NE1 have any ideas ?? Rob
Not for much longer, the BBC and presumably Murry only have the rest of the season, ITV (or whatever they call themselves) take over next year. Pity real F1 dosen't have a pause button, they could press it while they show the adverts. -- Suck The Goat

The cheapest in Oz is about $79.99 which would translate to around 40 English pounds. Tony

Murray is so great, someone is bound to pick him up for the F1 broadcasts next year. Maybe ITV will bring him along. I do think the UK will be unfortunate enough to join the rest of the world in having to put up with interruptions for commercial adverti***ts during F1 coverage next year. It's too bad, I will miss the BBC coverage and especially Murray Walker, but not Dr. Jonathan Palmer's commentary. I wonder if CBC will be airing the ITV coverage next year? Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.

They will. They claim that it won't interfere with the action though. Yeah, right; if there are any adverts between the green flag for the parade lap and the last car passing the chequered flag, action will be effected. IMHO. -- Mark Hill

You might want to check out the discussion on this in rec.autos.sports.f1 but I think I also heard that Eurosport is also losing the broadcast rights to F1 next year. I think I read that in Autosport magazine but I am not positive. Something about Eurosport not being able to pay enough money to the FIA to keep the broadcast rights. Not that it affects me here in the USA but I know the pain of shoddy F1 coverage and too many interruptions for adverts (ESPN). Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.
Time to get that letter written then :( Guess I'll just have to watch Eurosport instead. Yes there will still be adverts, but I won't watch the ITV version on principle - they don't put adverts every 15 minutes in a football match, so why in F1? I wonder if it will be as bad as the so called "coverage" they did of Mansell in Indycar - 25 minutes of nothing followed by 3 minutes of very stilted action :((( Richard
>Not that it affects me here in the >USA but I know the pain of shoddy F1 coverage and too many >interruptions for adverts (ESPN). Just a query (and we're getting way off topic for this newsgroup - sorry), but how (or maybe even _why_?) do you put up with this in America. I watch the Indycar races on Eurosport and they get the ESPN feed. Now Eurosport takes far too many breaks for my liking, but they actually provide their own commentary through most of the ESPN breaks. What with all the yellows yesterday, the Amercians can't have actually seen more than a few minutes of racing :( Did anyone else notice that they cut to an advert (Eurosport too) whilst showing the onboard view from Blundell's car as he passed Ribero & I think we just got a glimpse of Gugelmin as the picture faded - they cut off less than one second before the crash! So much for seeing the race "live". Richard
>It's too bad, I will miss the BBC coverage and especially Murray >Walker, but not Dr. Jonathan Palmer's commentary. I wonder if CBC will >be airing the ITV coverage next year? I'm with you there, the best commentary team would be Murray Walker (for his enthusiasm!) and John Watson from Eurosport. But as long as they don't have Jonathon (Boring) Palmer everything should be fine :-) __________________________ /------ Shane Bingley -----\ /---- Chelmsford, England ---\ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SNIP! >Richard If I can stay off-topic for just another minute or two. The truth of the matter as to why we put up with it is because we have no choice. Personally I watch the ESPN2 broadcast live with all the adverts, sometimes driving me to shouting at the TV for cutting to a commercial when some important pass or move is going on. Luckily, later at night I can watch and usually tape the Canadian rebroadcast of the BBC coverage which is much better. Actually we are just glad to be able to see any racing on TV. This year the local ABC television station decided to show a telethon for Muscular Distrophy (SP?) instead of the Indycar race one weekend, and not rebroadcast the race at all. When I called them to ask when they were going to show the race, I got a m***explanation on how helping sick children is more important than some car race. Not that I disagree with this, but it would not be too hard to rebroadcast the race in the early hours of the morning. Here in the USA autoracing receives very little respect or airtime, only the big 3 sports (baseball, basketball, football) get good TV coverage. So you see why F1 has only a hidden acquired following here in the USA, when even Indycar doesn't seem to yet receive a wide audience, though this seems to be on the increase in the last few years. With more and more racing sims coming out, I think more people will be exposed to the e***ment of auto racing and hopefully the TV coverage will also grow. I just hope ITV doesn't***up your coverage next year, and that at least they pick up Murray Walker as the announcer. Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.

Apparently it will be 3 x 5 min breaks. :-( Apparently Nigel Mansell has been signed up to do commentary next year, nobody knows whether this will be alongside or instead of Murray! 5 mins is long enough for 3 and a half laps on some circuits, taking out over 10 laps in a race. :-( -- Mark Hill (Microsoft: How many duplicates do you want today?)
