Sharing GP2 log:on CPU and video speed scores

Players posted CPU and video scores from GP2's log:on option for many systems. Matrox Millennium and ET6000 cards scored highest, while Cirrus Logic, ATI and some other cards scored very poorly. John Wallace attributed GP2's weak use of fast cards to its lack of linear framebuffer support.

I've got a lowly AMD 5x86 133 thats been underclocked to a 486-120mhz because my mobo won't support the 133 5x86. I've got 8 megs of RAM at 70ns. Processor (x86): 4 Dos Version: 00000007h Running windows 95 or above Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 162 Video speed: 181 I run GP2 with SVGA and NO details because I like the SVGA look. This way the estimated fps is 23.4. I then lower that to 18. It seems to run pretty good. But I'm finding that the VGA mode isn't bad at all. Its actually got some pretty good graphics for a VGA mode. Its much better than the VGA for ICR2. In VGA I can get an estimated fps of 23.4 with high detail and CURBS, FENCES, SMOKE(front view and rear view), BANK, and HILLS( I think), TRACk(rear view). This way the graphics are pretty good. Their VGA seems to have some nice curves on the cars. The texture isn't SUPER CLEAR. But its not bad. I might play it this way because of even more speed. But so far SVGA doesn't look bad. My Pentium Overdrive 83 Mhz (upgraded from 486/66) with Diamond Viper VLB 2Meg VRAM gives CPU speed: 105 Video speed: 27 *Sigh* Actually, I'm not sure I trust these figures as the game is quite playable in VGA with several textures on, and even in SVGA with no textures (and no wrecks in traffic!). Also, I'm sure that the Pentium Overdrive 83Mhz is at least 50% faster than a 486 (in 32-bit environemnts). Still, can anyone recommend a good VLB video card? Okay everybody, you should probably sit down before I give you the numbers........ :) P100, Imagine 128 video CPU: 193 Video: 28 (!!!!!!) I dare anybody to beat that video score! The Imagine 128 is a FANTASTIC Windows accelerator, but uses a Cirrus Logic 5422 for DOS, and is truly awful. Incidentally, I popped the machine's original video card back in to see if it made a big difference (expecting that it wouldn't), and discovered that SVGA was now very playable with Low Detail and most textures off (all but walls and trackside). I figured that the slow framerate was mostly due to the P100, but found that even a marginally better video card (didn't do a log, sorry, but it's just a Cirrus Logic 5434) made a big difference. I ordered a Millenium two days ago......can't get here quick enough! Rick

But if one is thinking of getting this card for other 3D games, it would be nice to know how it performs in GP2 and other "normal" DOS situations. I know that this is just exactly the type of information that seems to be lacking when people talk about 3D cards. I'd like to know if the CPU has anything at all to do with the Video Speed. AFAIK, it's the video card, and the host bus that will make the difference. Could someone please tell me otherwise, or what is the point in saying your CPU speed/memory etc..? ------------- Richard Sobey

I've got a P166, 32Mb EDO ram, 256Kb pipeline cache, and a Hercules Dynamite 128. I only got the Dynamite yesterday - I have a slow Trident 9440 which came with the computer. Scores I got with the Trident: CPU: 322 Video: 86 (yuck!) SVGA, maximum details, fps set to 25.6, starting at the back of the grid at monaco: occupancy = 390% With the Dynamite: CPU: 322 (how odd - no change! :) ) Video: 381 SVGA, monaco, etc. etc: occupancy = 390% As you can see - THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. f*** this is annoying. THis, from a card which is supposed to be the fastest DOS card on the market. A little but not enough to warrant buying it just for this purpose. It is a good overall card at a reasonable price though.

Dont buy a video card expecting miracles. If the game uses the video card wisely you will see some modest improvements. I went from S3 trio 64+ w/2megs to the Lightspeed 128 w/2.25 megs. GP2 was smoother but I would say only maybe 1fps gained. NASCAR seemed to get even more help and both Quake and AH-64 saw a marked improvement. Here is the evolution of my Weekends tunings using GP2 log:on p5-150 w/trio proc. 290 video 177 p5-150 w/Lightspeed proc. 290 video 447 Modest increase p5-150 w/Lightspeed overclocked to 166 proc. 323 video 496 Significant increase. If you want a real increase in GP2 go for processor speed.
GP2 is VERY strange with respect to video cards. If you try using ICR2 V1.0.2, you will see quite an improvement with the frame-rate counter. In GP2, there is little or no difference. Probably this is due to the lack of LFB support, which was quite an oversight I think. The new card will be faster in everything.....except GP2 it seems :( Cheers! This may seem like a silly question but how do your find out the particular vid, cpu speed of your system. I have a p133 with 16MB EDO and a Matrox MIllenium and I am curious to see how my machine compares with others. Any help will be greatly appreciated Nigel /\ /\ { + + } FEEL HONOURED, YOU HAVE JUST RECEIVED SOME E-MAIL FROM { O } BIGVERN \ ____ / \ \__/ / \____/ "NO BASTARD IS GONNA TAKE ME ALIVE"
Clearly there is something wrong with the way GP2 uses your graphics cards then. On my system (P133, 16MB EDO, 256K PLB cache, 2MB Matrox Millennium), I _only_ (ha ha) get 340% occupancy using your Monaco scenario above. Video score is 458 btw) If you are getting 390% with a P166, well, at the very least it says something about the interaction between your (good) card and GP2. Maybe something to do with the program not supporting VESA 2?? BTW, I find it hard to believe those who have said that the GP2 video score only reflects VGA performance. The Millennium is distinctly average in VGA (as proved(?) by using the Doom benchmark) yet scores very high using the GP2 one. Maybe the difference is just in the lack of VESA 2 extensions used by GP2 and the specific video mode used? Richard PS: I actually tried a lap with the 340% occupancy. Quite hilarious really. I think the slow motion replay suited my reaction times as I made up rather a lot of places in the one lap <g>

Simple question: does having log:on result in a slower framerate than having log:off? Lately I start GP2 with log:off, but I also manually lowered framerate and changed detail, so it isn't clear what changing the log did for me. Everything seems faster, but that is probably just from manually lowering framerate.
