GP2 difficulty, graphics settings and UK availability

UK players discussed receiving GP2 by mail order and found it much harder than GP1, with AI cars far ahead even at amateur level. Others explained that automatic detail sets graphics once rather than adjusting during play, and complained the manual omitted graphics options. Some noted the box and CD were dated 1995, suggesting they were printed long before the game was finished.

2 questions Does f1gp2 give AI cars stop-go penalties (eg speeding in the pits)? Does f1gp2 have realistic attrition?
1) not at all: neither your car can have it 2) yes, that's it: when you hit the kerb, you feel the car diffrent, and you feel it too when you change suspensions -- Paolo Zanetto > 2 questions > Does f1gp2 give AI cars stop-go penalties (eg speeding in the pits)? > Does f1gp2 have realistic attrition?

Fisrst off: As a seasoned F1GP user, I have to say that GP2 is too damn hard. At amateur level the CC cars are way out in front. I did 28 laps of Brazil (saving every couple of laps) - finished second but Im pretty sure I was holding everyone up - Shumacher was 40 seconds in front of me! Running a P120 with 16Megs Ram, 1Meg Trident video card: SVGA, All detail turned on front view apart from the sky. Kerbs, bank, track and smoke turned on rear. Trackside objects turned on low - reccomends 13.4 fps - runs ok at 14.2 fps. Got to say: Graphics are excellent - but theres lots missing on the above settings i.e no tunnel at Monaco! Wheres the rain Geoff? Mike

Well, if you have seen F1 races in TV for last few years, 40 secs isn't even much. It is quite common that there is 30 sec - 1 min gaps between racers in the end of race. It sure isn't fun or interesting but it is reality. Anyway, problem with GP1 was, it is too easy (if you don't have GP-editor) so I'm happy if GP2 is hard but of course it can be too hard. Well, we will see in time. We'll just have to practice. Right ? Don't give up ! Toni

Heh heh, not wanting to brag or anything (not!) but I ran my first full distance race on Sunday at IMola on Pro level. Qualified 4th with an all-Williams front row and Schumi next to me on the grid; slipped back to 5th at the start despite using a manual clutch (helps enormously for starts) but a broken wing caused me to alter my strategy considerably and as a result I managed to finish 3rd only about 15 seconds behind the leader. It was an absolute joy having backmarkers leave me room to pass them! --

Well, I must say, GP2 is HARD, I won't say too hard, but it sure is hard. It helps a lot when you find a matching setup, otherwise the CC are pushing you so hard, you're bound to make mistakes, which actually I did and also on the same track as you did. Although qualifying in fifth position on Imola (PRO level), I had every bit of trouble keeping the CC behind me and keeping up with the cars up front. Making mistakes and being attacked by suicidal attempts of Schumacher, Frentzen and Verstappen in a way even Hill wouldn't have tried, realy makes things tough and not always fun to play. Loading saved games realy comes in handy in such cases ! But he, you don't get me complaining about it....it simply is a great piece of software...the one thing that one should say about it, is that it's not a game, it's real life, only the keyboard and computer screen make you realise this is a racing simulation ! See Ya, Eddy
I am new to the group so forgive this question. When will GP2 be available in the states? I have both Nascar Racing and IndyCar2, and would love the chance to emmulate Jacque Villenueve. Thanks, Jon Villanueva

All I can say is wow. I have played it for 2 hours on the following system: Pentium 75 16Mb RAM Quad Speed CD-ROM 2MB Video Card Absolutely awesome. Well done Microprose. I have a similar system; were you running in VGA or SVGA and what type of video card? Also, any idea of the advantages of more RAM? Steve Grant
>By the way, does anybody understand how the graphics options work. I tried >to set it to Automatic detail, and nothing turned off, even though the >computer was struggling. As far as I understand (correct me if this is total bullsh*t) the automatic detail is static during the game, ie. when you select the automatic detail, the game makes an educated guess of graphics options that gives 16 fps on your system. That's it. The game does not switch off any details during the race like Papyrus sims do, you can only check the processor occupancy and use ALT-D to adjust the four levels of trackside objects. I believe the game actually slows down _time_ to give you the required amount of fps, so a game 'second' may be two seconds in real time. Just guessing here,

The auto detail doesn't seem to work in the same way as ICR2. You select a frame rate with the + and -, and then click on Automatic. Then when you eneter the sim it will give you details that will supply that average frame rate. The textures do not flick on and off as you drive. When you select automatic detail, GP2 estimates a graphics and frame rate setup, which suits your computer. This is only done once - it is not an active function which adjust graphics during gameplay. -- Lennart Gr?nlund http://www.pip.dknet.dk/~pip2351/

How can you say that the manual lacks explanation on setups. Appendix C and D cover this topic to the full. Torgeir

Sorry I wasnt clear but what I meant is the manual doesnt explain how the graphic options work very well. Sort of skipped the part about if you set desired framerate lower than estimated the sensation of speed will be better because of the lower Processor Occupancy. Pierre PAPA DOC Legrand

It seems too obvious that the manual was written well before the game was finished. It is very hard for the author of the manual to anticipate what will and will not be in the game if he has to finished the manual half a year before. (it did print 1995 on mine) This game is too much self exploring. It's almost like an adventure game. BTW, does anyone know how to use the 4th to 7th set of types in a race weekend. I normally just run a 1 or 2 stops race, so I always waste a set of tyres!! Jeff
I bought this game yesterday . I have a 486Dx2-66 with 16mb ram. Although it's slow i can still play bits of it and those bits are awesome. Undoubtlably the best game. I didn't like that microprose did a Windows 95 job and made everyone require a new machine. But now i reconsider and say it was worth it! Cause it's a bit slow i don't think i've used it to the full advantage. But i love it. With GP1 and now this all my Gping dreams come true. I also got a phamplet about some software they'll release that lets you build tracks and all that should be just as much fun! My one question is that Microprose advertised this game to include changing weather conditions but there's no reference to this anywhere except during the track description of Spa where it is mentioned about changing weather patterns. But no details about the game. I felt that driving on a dry line on a wet track would be the ultimate but They have dissappointed me (only slightly) about this. Cause it's the beta version will this be fixed and if so how will i upgrade it. So from one Slow GP2 player to however many others there are.. Keep on Truckin' ahh.... racing!!!

Maybe I misunderstood you but are you trying to run this from WIN95? If so you can get more speed by not doing so. Run it from DOS, it and you will be much happier. Great sim isnt it?? Pierre PAPA DOC Legrand
Use the extra set of tires to do a mock race run during a practice session, or if you need an extra bit of speed during qualifying you have that extra set of "sticker" tires handy. For example, during my race weekend at Brazil, here's what I did with my seven sets of tires while trying to learn the track: Friday practice: 1 set of sticker tires, 35 laps; 6 laps to get a qualifying setup, 29 laps to get a race setup Friday qualifying: 3 sets of sticker tires, 3-5 laps each Saturday practice: 2 sets of scuffed tires, used from the Friday qualifying, to work on qualifying and race setups Saturday qualifying: 3 sets of sticker tires, 3-5 laps each Sunday warmup: 1 set of scuffed tires to work on race setup Sunday race: 3 sets of scuffed tires with only 3-5 laps on them, two-stop pit strategy Now, when my championship season gets around to Brazil again, I can probably save up on sets of sticker tires for the race because I'll have a pretty good car setup by then. However, since this was my first time at Brazil and had no setup to work with, I had to use my seven sets a little more heavily to get the feel and setup for the circuit. I'll probably be using this same routine at the other tracks too, unless I can get competitive times right away. -- +------------------+--------------------------------------------+ | G. Along the lines of the lacking manual. Anyone know what verges and hills are? None of the graphics options are explained in the manual. I gotta turn a buncha stuff off to get it smooth as I like it on my P5-100 and it's hard to decide what to turn off. OH, except for Monaco, there you just turn off everything :) Eric

It seems suspicious that the box just says 'VGA graphics' on the back not SVGA. Were they considering dropping SVGA the same way they dropped weather? I noticed that the 'requirements' section on the box is on a sticker. I peeled it off, and found a different set of requirements on the back. Namely: For IBM PC 486, Pentium, and 100% Compatibles with CD-ROM Required: 8mb RAM * Double Speed CD-ROM DRive * Colour monitor with VGA/SVGA graphics * MS-DOS 5.0 or higher Recommended: 66Mhz * Joystick * Microsoft Mouse Supported: Sound Blaster (and 100% compatibles) * Gravis Ultrasound * Pro Audio Spectrum IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines. Try looking at the CD ... it says it was printed in 1995 (or copyright in 1995) ... all indications point to the fact that the docs and box and cd's were printed WELL before the game was finished (last year). S
