Notable threadPirated early GP2 build circulates with a virus

Posters reported that a 21-disk pirated version of Grand Prix 2 had appeared on warez sites, and most condemned downloading it ahead of the retail release. Investigation by readers showed it was an old alpha build dated around December 1995, VGA-only and carrying the Burglar.1150 virus. A few users still begged for the download location and were mocked.

I'm affraid it is true. I've seen it on various pirate sites. I think it was 21 1.44meg zips. I'm not going to get it because I've waited long enough for GP2, I think I can pay for this one. Don't you just hate it when the pirates get it before the legit paying populous?

I think it's a favour we owe, after all MPS, and Geoff's team's efforts, to buy the game fair and square. I too wanna play it now, but when I read that there's a pirate version doing the rounds i felt like shit inside. I don't even want to see the pirate version, it's a total sign of disrespect and I think we owe more.
Y'know, this is one of these times I REALLY hope the pirate version has a horrendous virus that wipes out the hard-disk of those who steal it. We've waited years for this, moaned, complained, agonised, begged, worried over PC specs and hoped for features. The very LEAST that can be done is to give some reward to the people that made it. _________________________________ __ _____| |_____ __ _________| |__| :| John Wallace | |__| |_________ \ :| |::| :| Team WW Racing TSW | |::| | / > :| |::| :|_________________________________| |::| | < / :|__|::|____:/ Sim Racing News \.____|::|__| \ /_______:/ \::/ http://sneezy.dcn.ed.ac.uk/simnews/index.htm\::/ \._______\

yes, pirating sucks etc. but don't u think it's "safer" to download it,try and see how it does on your machine, afterwards,if u like it,just buy it when it comes out, else just delete it. It's a safer bet than paying $90 for it only to find out it doesn't run on your machine at a acceptable rate. Leslie

These warez thing is done by groups so there's the 99% chance it doesn't have a virus. So far I've only been infected once ;)

Yeah, in principle it's a good idea, but in practice it's simply encouraging piracy. I'd rather wait ten days than go into a warez group and drag a free game that I don't deserve out! If you can't wait ten days and decide to get the game, then buy it properly when it is released then that's all very well but you're just supporting pirates who will supply it to people who don't end up buying it. Whatever way YOU go about it, Microprose will still suffer regardless; so think about it first. Please take note, cheers, Dave Bowers.

Yes but the pirate version could only be a copy of one of the beta releases. Thus it would not be an accurate example of frame rates yet anyhow. So you really need to buy the real thing or listen to this news group for reviews. Take heart Dave... I've heard some news about this 21 disk "release" by some pirate group. First, the files in it date back to January 96, or previous... some as far back as last summer! Nothing - nothing in it is dated anytime in the last few months, except for the cracks it comes with. This would make it an early beta, or possibly even an alpha. Second, it has the BURGLAR virus attached to many of the .exe files, so any sucker stupid enough to download it is gonna get zapped. Think about it - the only way this could make it to warez before it was released (Microprose ain't nearly as big as Mickeysoft, so theres almost no chance it could be stolen in final form from the coders) - , the only way it could have been grabbed is by some lamo who ripped the CD beta or alpha at some trade show, packaged the CDrip up, and started distributing it, but he probably had Burglar on his system when he tested it out.... Oh well, my thoughts about warez pirating of software from big corporations is pretty ambivilant (especially when a company like Corel wants to charge me almost $400 Cdn for an Upgrade!!!), but I don't like it when the small guys, like Microprose, get zapped... and it looks like anyone trying to get their GPII fix from this warez is gonna get some unexpected guests in the computers... and slow performance from a beta. If one starts the game with the /help option, it says "version 0.1a". The game looks very buggy. Only a few people actually got it to work. There are lots of protections in it. For example, one need to have two small files on a floppy disk in drive a: and type in two passwords for the game to start. I got dissapointed, because I didn't manage to get the game to run, it stalls when the track is beeing loaded. It's till fun though to browse though the options menus. Looks very interesting. I'm gonna buy the game as soon as it's out!!! /Linus Girdland -- +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Linus Girdland | Studying Software Engineering at | | | Karlskrona/Ronneby in Sweden | | Vapnarstigen 3 | | | S-372 35 Ronneby | | | Phone: +46-(0)457-14447 | | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Looks like my sources saying it has the Burglar virus are right... and you know what... not EVERY virus scanner will catch this *** one... I'm not sure, and someone can correct me on this, but I think Burglar is polymorphic... which means it changes to prevent anti-virus software from detecting it. I was smart enough to run the virus scan before running any exe's and let me tell you that this game is GOOOOOOD!!!!!! It's unbelievable the amount of tweaking you can do to your car (setups.) It also has the most complete Joystick/Control menu ever created. You can have a clutch in this game if you wish. Can't wait to get the CD when it comes out to get the full CD MUSIC and SOUND.

Hi Dave, regarding MPS,the "latest" game I've brought from them, which is "1944 across the Rhine",I've to say I was beening rip-off. On the side of the box,the system requirements said minium 486 dx33 and 4 meg ram,I've a 484dx66 plus 8 meg,so I thought I should get some reasonable performance, but in the end,it turns out that even a P100 and 16meg ram aren't powerfull enough to run it(if u don't believe me,ask anyone in the comp.ibm-pc*****.games.stratigies newsgroup),and guess what?I can't get a refund, and it's been gathering dusk ever since(until I get a >P100 anyway) if I've downloaded it instead....... :( BTW the game itself wasn't too bad,it's just being TOO SLOW. Leslie
I noticed that the date of the executable file was December 19, 1995!!! That is old! So it's a very old verion, not even a beta! It's version 0.1 alpha. No wonder it doesn't work and has lots of bugs. But still interesting to explore. /Linus Girdland -- +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Linus Girdland | Studying Software Engineering at | | | Karlskrona/Ronneby in Sweden | | Vapnarstigen 3 | | | S-372 35 Ronneby | | | Phone: +46-(0)457-14447 | | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+

trust me, this release has a virus... it was most likely ripped from a demo CD at some trade show a while back, and the guy who ripped it probably had the BURGLAR.1150 virus on his system when he installed it/tested it/whatever. The group that released this alpha ware is virtually unknown in the underground community... so its probably just some lamo who wanted to be cool. I think iv'e got the 21 disk version that your discussing here, I got it off a friend, but don't get too e***d, it aint that great. It does however show the user how goddam brilliant the full thing is going to be, the sounds are fantastic, (go out and buy a big amp!) the realism is very good, the car handles just like i reckon an f1 would 8).. ie no steering under brakes (you'll get sore fingers keyboard users), but on the exit of a corner, its just brilliant. The camera views are very good, ie looking back at drivers head, front left wing, each rear wing plate, airbox side views, plus the normal front, back, tv angled views. Althought the version I obtained is very good, it doesnt contain all the new things iv'e been reading about in rec.autos.simulators, but be warned people, you'll be needing one hot pentium for this baby. But it really is so very realistic and so very good. GP2.. its out there.. .. some ***y where....
