Review: 95% for GP2

GP2's 95% review and the delayed ICR2 patch

The thread started with GP2's 95% score in UK PC Gamer, the magazine's highest at the time, but soon turned into complaints about the delayed ICR2 patch. Rick Genter said the patch was in testing. Charlie Heath clarified that it was still in QA at Papyrus rather than held up by Sierra, and noted that it had been announced too early. By mid-July posters were still asking where it was.

Well, some kiddies magazines seems to give games 80-90%+ on a regular basis. Maybe the original poster had that in mind? Anyroad, F1GP2 got 95% in the UK version of PCGamer, and that was the highest points score they have ever given. __ John Magne Trane `(*)[27]___(*)Z>

I really do wonder about the average iq of some people these days I thought we were supposed to be the most intelligent species on the planet ;-) To answer your question, of course 95% means the game is good, in fact it means the game is brilliant, but bear in mind the version "reviewed" was an early beta copy, and the game has evolved an awful lot since then. We shall have to wait and see in 8 days or so (If you beleive in miracles) so see for ourselves how good it really is, and whether we can actually play it on our machines or not. Chris Fisher
Ok where is it? June 15th has come and past. We were told to wait a couple more days, over 3 days ago. So where is the patch. I stopped playing ICR2 over a month ago because of the bugs, and I want to play it again, I'm getting bored with NASCARS!! Please put us out of misery and tell us where to get the patch soon. Please Pretty please Enough grovelling, release it NOW! Chris Fisher

I think he meant that a lot of reviews give out high scores, but popular opinion from the masses often disagree, so how did 95% REALLY reflect on the game. Well, Rick said that it should be online by the enf of last week. It's now Monday morning, and I've just been to the Sierra Web Page, and guess what no sign of the patch! This is turning out to be like GP2, although I'm sure the patch is finished, it's just we can't get our hands on it. So where can we get it from, if Sierra can't be bothered to put it on their web page, and technical support seems to think that the patch doesn't exist. Chris Fisher

The patch is currently in testing. I'll post when it's up on the web site. Rick Genter Technical Lead, IndyCar Racing II Sierra On-Line, Inc.

For what it's worth, here is a copy from an E-Mail response I got from Sierria regarding the patch: <<Subj: Indy 2 patch Date: 96-06-25 12:11:35 EDT From: SierraOne To: Ualani The patch is in Papyrus QA currently, not Sierra (according to Rick Genter), and when they are through with it will have to come to Sierra for some final touches and approval for release. After it is approved it will probably take 1-2 days for the patch to be releases on AOL. And this is *exactly* the reason we do not distribute this information normally -- Papyrus seems to have mis-predicted the release date for the patch, and now everyone's expectations have been falsely set. This has nothing to do with Sierra's ownership of Papyrus, just one person's mis-estimation, nothing more. Sierraone/Bryan>>

Clarifying again - the patch has not yet reached Sierra. It is still in QA _at Papyrus_, just as it would have been if Papyrus were independent rather than a division of Sierra. And, no, the folks in QA at Papyrus are not sitting on the patch either; they've got a job to do, and they're doing it. Charlie Heath Papyrus Design Group

I'll have to write to that tech in the event of questions in the future. The Sierra tech I dealt with (well, we shouldn't name names, should we!) simply responds to any questions such as "where will it be" or "when do you expect it" with "The patch is not available yet." The second time he added "Release of the patch was announced prematurely." Took about 3 days for each response. Thankfully, Rick has let us know what is going on.

Thats all fine, but why did we hear about how somebody STAYED UP ALL NIGHT TO FINISH IT if that only meant it was going to be another month till it's released????? If somebody wants a pat on the back, for a hard days work..just ask..But don't make it sound like we should be on the look-out for it if it isn't even close to being released. Jeez. Ill check back in September to see if it's been released yet. And OH MY GOD, I just can't wait till that NASCAR 2 is released this fall..Yea right !! Maybe by NEXT Christmas.. thats 12/97......... MAYBE!!! Mick

Can anyone tell me if there is a patch for the Paint kit problem. ie wrong coloured airbox etc. also is there a patch for the disapearing car at Laguna Seca. If these patches are available where can I get them from
glen 29 Jun 1996#323838
This is a quote from an email sent to me by Ed Martin. "The patch is going through testing right now. We hope to have it online sometime next week" There folks is a positive response :-). Let's hope that Sierra put it up as soon as possible, after all one of their tech guys said that the patch for the paintkit would be put on the web site about 2 weeks ago, and I may be blind (figuratively speaking), but I can't find it :-) -- Glenn Beaumaris "I believe in God-after all Helen Hunt exists"

The yellow flag bug isn't fixed, but, after watching the sad end of the Toronto Indycar race there's not enough emotion left to care about a yellow flag bug.
