Hi,
Is anyone else experiencing a redirect to vugames.com when trying to
reach your favourite driving sim developers?
What's up with that?
Cheers,
Jørgen
Notable threadFlame warPapyrus website redirects to Vivendi Universal Games
Jorgen Sundvor Smith noticed that papy.com redirected to vugames.com, raising fears that Papyrus had been shut down. The thread descended into an insult-laden argument between Slug and JP over when Sierra bought Papyrus and whether NASCAR revenue made GPL possible. Vivendi said the site was down for technical reasons, Jan Verschueren reported that Papyrus was said to be working on a car physics SDK for consoles, and posters debated the upcoming GPL 1965 mod.
Automated summary.
Haven't Papyrus been shut down?

Was it really an ownership situation? I thought Papy was Papy, and Sierra
was their publisher and Vivendi Universal was the parent company to Sierra.

At the end of 1998 Cendant announces the sale of the Software Division to
the French company Havas, at that time France's largest media group. Havas
for their part was just bought by Vivendi, an enormous multinational group
in the water supply industry, which wants to enter the media and
telecommunications industry.
2000
Sierra gets further reorganized and more employees are fired. In the year
2000 Vivendi, Seagram and Canal+ form Vivendi Universal. Havas becomes
Vivendi Universal Publishing, to whose games-division beside Sierra On-Line
also Blizzard Entertainment and Universal Interactive Studios belong.
2002
Sierra On-Line is officially renamed into Sierra Entertainment, Inc..
Together with Blizzard Entertainment and Universal Interactive Sierra
Entertainment belongs to Vivendi Universal Games. They sell together
annually for more than 600 million US dollars.
2003
Vivendi Universal considers the sale of their video game section. It should
bring Vivendi Universal about 2 billion Euro. Still Vivendi's new boss Jean
Rene Fourtou has however not made a decision. For Fourtou the game section
does not belong to the core business and he wants to lower the company's
debts by this sale. The section works under the name of Vivendi Universal
Games Inc., belonges to Vivendi Universal Publishing and is at present the
second largest game company world-wide. Possible buyers are Microsoft, Sega
and Sony.

As I recall ICR2 (95) was the first time Sierra was the publisher (ICR and
Nascar were Virgin). N2 (end of 96) was definitely before GPL (98).
Sierra was the publisher in 95 but I don't know when Papy became a division
of Sierra.

Boy I forgot about that...I raced Hawaii a couple of times with the
original. Got to race those races with some great people. Nascar
Racing was the start of something so great. I have lost the CD
probably a couple of years ago, but I still fire up the original
Indycar Racing CD a couple times a week!

Sierra did publish it but I think they actually bought Papy out later,
but I admit I could be wrong. The point is that Sierra did/does own
Sierra and it was after this purchase where Papy was forced to make

My initial comment was that Sierra does indeed own Papyrus software in
reply to someone thinking that they did not own them. Which is true,
although, I concede that I may have the dates wrong as to when they
actually bought them. You seem to have taken issue with the little
comment I made about them doing nothing but Nascar sims since. It's a
well known fact that Payrus has only been making Nascar sims for the
last few years because their owner's think that's where the money is.
Even if Sierra did publish Indycar2 and GPL, they soon put an end to
those series when they saw the profits were not high enough for them.
Please point anything in the above that is not true. And I've been PC
gaming with Papyrus sims since 1993 so screw you and your stupid
commets like the above.

resources available ?(i.e., MONEY)
Your original comment, "Yes, Sierra owned Payrus. Otherwise Papyrus would
have probably made Indycar3 and not just Nascar sims ". Sure looks like you
think if Papy wasn't with Sierra they would have made more open wheel sims.
Nope, they just would have gone out of business sooner, or would have been
with someone else who would have acted just like Sierra.
I realize in your dream world, you probably throw fits about mean old
companies that actually want things to make a profit, but you'll learn.
Blaming Sierra for sticking to that after getting burned once is
humorous.

You're assuming that Payrus didn't have the money to make an open
wheeled sim. If they did and didn't need Sierra then they would have.
Profit margins be damned.

Again, an assumption on your part. QAnd a flawed one because you don't
know for a fact that Indycar3 would or would not have made money
because it never was made.

Well that is certainly the question I'm asking myself now that the
papyrus web site has been effectively shut down by their financial
owners.
I was dying a bit with anticipation of what they'd be doing next. I
just hope this won't be "nothing".
Shame on Vivendi for shutting down the web site without a whisk of a
mention or even trying to integrate the content into their own.
Cheers,
Jørgen

Ok. That's all good information, but what no-one but one (Andi) have
commented on and the matter of most importance, is that of what has
happened to Papyrus - why is the web site closed down in such a rude
manner?
Certainly I'm not the only person in this group asking this question?

I wrote to VUGames and got the following in return:
"The http://www.papy.com web site is currently down due to some
technical problems. Papyrus Racing hopes to have it back up very
soon."
Phew...! :)
Sorry to raise the alarm.

What's the big deal ? Not like any news is ever going to be posted there,
and any files there are available elsewhere.
Like the cop says at the accident scene......"Nothing to see here, move
along "

I reckon the big deal is that Papyrus Racing are the mothers and
fathers of our greatest racing sims.
That's all.
If this doesn't make any sense to you, then please do indeed move
along.

Lol, so ? If they're website existing has to prove that to you,
interesting. Tell me, exactly what are you needing there, that isn't
available anywhere else ?
Not like they're going to be making any more.....you know that, right ?

Or, in other words, GPL FOREVER! Yee-haaaa...! :)
Well, in the Papy world this year the focus could be right back on it
with the improved physics and reportedly much-improved driveability of
the 65 Mod.
Which, from the look of things, is seriously REAL Soon Now. Think
Probably Not Even Weeks.

N2003 has improved physics and the F2 cars in GPL are already very
drivable.
I really don't understand why anyone cares about the 65 mod anymore at
this point when n2003 surpasses anything the gpl engine, no matter how
modified, can do, and it does it straight out of the box.

Because unlike the TA-mod, which is severely limited because NR2003 is a
stock car game (and a very good stock car game, don't get me wrong)
underneath, the 65 cars won't be limited by GPL being a 1967 F1 sim (new car
dimensions and tyre physics). That, and it being a very iconic era of the
sport of course.

Not to mention it being way more exiting cars to drive, way more exiting
circuits (of the time, drivers being nuts back then), and generally
being way more exiting historically.
(Don't forget btw, there are also more mods planned, like 1955, 66,
early wingless 68 (as a kinda-sorta improved 67 GPL) and if we're lucky,
some more eras most of us would probably like to see simulated very much.)
