Hmm, don't really agree that using keys s the fastest method, did you really
mean this?
Using a wheel and pedals cuts seconds off the lap-time.
Racing GPL with only a keyboard
A new buyer asked about GPL lap times using only a keyboard, and was told it is nearly hopeless without an analogue controller. A side argument between Colin and Jo Helsen disputed whether keyboard drivers ever held the fastest GP2 laps, with Jo insisting that wheel users were always faster.

What is your best LAP time on any of the GPL tracks with a keyboard, and
only a keyboard -- no pedals, no shifters, no joysticks, no wheels?

Crammond obviuosly realises that there are lots of people out
there who don't wish (or have the money to) to spend a fortune
on expensve controller equipment.
One of the joys of GP2 was that it was instantly accesible to
anyone with a reasonably powered computer, you didn't have to
go out and spend money on controllers/3d cards, you just loaded
it up and went racing.
GP2 had a steering help system if you used the keys which would
stop you from over turning, it was still a fun and realistic
experiance with this control method, not to forget it was also
the fastest.

Hmm...I imagine you'll make it 2m before you get around Watkins Glen and
after you butcher the 90 you'll kill yourself...
Don't you even have some cheap joystick for flight sims or something?
Almost anything is better than the keyboard...just something analog!!!

Seriously??
I managed a 1:11 in the Honda at Watkins Glen.

Once you get a wheel, you can enjoy this sim which puts all others to shame,
until then just maybe learn the tracks and study how to build setups.

No it's not pure nonsense.
I bought GP2 the day it came out and followed the fastest lap for the 1
year+ that I played it.
Agreed, maybe now it's different, but back then the fastest laps WERE done
using the keyboard.
And no I'm not talking about F1GP.
Read posts more carefully before launching headlong at someone else. Very
bad form.

This is pure NONSENSE. You are talking about F1GP. In GP2, excellent
wheel drivers are 2-3s faster than excellent keyboard drivers. Period.
Any hotlap league out there can give you the facts.

This may be true now, but I remember when GP2 came out the KB drivers were
extremely competitive and had some of the top laps. It took a while to unseat
them. Good wheels (and joysticks?) were still somewhat of a novelty, and the
keyboard guys even found a way to disable throttle help for better control.

I have never used the keyboard in GP2. Never have, never will.
As someone who has a LWFF and TSW I don't feel the need =)
Even back then I used my trusty joystick!
I think you missed my point altogether.
My point was simply that when I was playing, the best times were set by guys
using the keyboard. To which you responded that I was talking nonsense and
that it was not true and that I was talking about F1GP. I then told you
that when I was playing it was indeed the case.
I can't really see how this translates into "Then you try to tell us that
this devaluates the sim qualities of GP2 so much" which of course is my
"REAL hidden agenda"
The truth is out there Mulder, you just need to know where to look...

I used to play GP2 with a keyboard and then changed to wheel once i got a
wheel i beat all the qual records at every track...Not something i could do
on keyboard..the wheel was indeed 2-3 secs a lap faster..

First you are talking about "the best laptimes EVER recorded". Not
about beginner laptimes or early laptimes or anything
Then you try to tell us that this devaluates the sim qualities of GP2
so much (because keyboard players could do better than wheel drivers
and this is so unreal). Your REAL hidden agenda, of course.
I don't even believe for a second that keyboard drivers were faster at
the beginning. The HOF2, the hotlap competition that set the
standards, had wheel and joystick drivers at the top from the start.
You were just looking in the wrong places.
So the problem is NOT that I should read more carefully, I believe <G>

Well, your statement "when I was playing" certainly was much too
general here. In places where good keyboard drivers were driving
against good wheel drivers, wheel drivers have *ALWAYS* been
considerably faster, even at the start.
Do I have to repeat it again? :-)
You said:
"I remember the best lap times ever recorded in GP2 were done by guys

Why do you say "Sad but true....". I don't think there is another
interpretation than that you don't like the fact that a keyboard would
be faster than a wheel (which isn't true anyway of course). And which
reason is there not to like that fact? Can't be another reason than
that this spoils the "sim" qualities of the game for you. Why is it
"sad" otherwise???? Just tell us.
