Second NASCAR 4 screenshot hints at new engine

Papyrus posted a second NASCAR Racing 4 screenshot showing Richmond at night. Dave Henrie and others argued that the straight pit lanes proved the old NASCAR 2/3 code had been retired in favour of a GPL-derived engine, while sceptics said only physics mattered. A poster who called GPL junk provoked a long side argument, with Jim Erb claiming most sim racers disliked GPL.

It isn't a fact that GPL is the best thing since sliced bread, it's an opinion, albeit popular opinion around here. It isn't his fault that he didn't like the game. Not liking a popular game doesn't make someone a "kid" or an "idiot" as others have remarked. GPL is a love hate thing, and if you never get past the hate part, then you simply hate it. Papyrus screwed up big time in the marketing and production of GPL. We can all sit here a year later with all the third party utilities, tracks and public setups and say that it's perfect, but out of the box it was not a lot of fun. No simple tracks, preferably oval and banked to learn the feel of the cars. No AI adjustments to slow down the competition. How stupid was it to make progressive AI that improves as you do, and then have the AI start out running world record times? Also, the default setups that shipped with the game were dreadful. The game really isn't nearly as hard as some on this news group would have you believe, but the default setups sure made it seem like it. They gave us the F3/F2 crap, but most people skip right past that and go to F1. A "career mode" might have made sense. Then, without simple tracks to learn the cars, a new person couldn't keep a car on the track long enough to learn how to tweak the setup. Papyrus has no one to blame but themselves (and maybe Sierra for rushing them to put it out the door) for GPL failing miserably in the eyes of people like 3_4_me.

UMMM What the hell are you saying!?!?!!? GPL is by far one of the greatest racing simulatiosn amd, one of the most realistic racing simulations ever made. The feel of the car racing at 180MPH at monza. Is the best feeling you could feel in a simulation. The AI having there own personality is awsome to. So I can tell you one thing, if you hate GPL go get SOS37 or go back to SNES or nentendo!

That is a great way to say it. :-) Please view my site and send in some crashes [email hidden] Http://swtwok.00game.com
Yep, I noticed the straight pit roads, etc. I also have been told my taxes would be lowered :) Remember the N3 movie? Until the game's released with all the features that they advertise for pre-release, nothing's been retired, IMO. Been there, done that, with N3... And yes, I am a huge fan of Papy. Just stating the truth :) Not trying to get in an argument, just making the point that screenshots, previews, etc. don't mean a whole lot from anyone, not just Papy. I've already covered this...but here goes again. The EYE CANDY isn't the big feature...The fact that the pit lanes are straight means that the ANCIENT ICR2/N2/N99/N3 code has been retired. You aren't getting an 'improved' physics engine. You are getting the King of the Hill. From what I hear (which by no means is official in any way) is that N4 will implement a modified GPL physics engine. It will have 6 degrees of freedom. Other than that, who knows what "modified" may refer too. It could mean simply implemented with Winston Cup cars in mind or it could mean "dumbied down" so its "not too hard". AND - Lets not start the 1967 F1 cars are suppose to be hard to drive debate... I already agree with it! Im just passing on what I heard through the grape vine. Who cares about the graphics? N3 graphics would suit me fine if improved physics and much improved AI were implemented, the latter especially if online racing is going to be no better than what currently exists for gpl/n3. IMHO 2000 Winston Cup cars are not a piece of cake to hang on to either. After attending Bristol this year my thoughts were confirmed. Here is a quote from a post I made directly after the race titled "The Bristol Experience": "For a while I focused only on the transition (between turn 4 and the front stretch). As each car came around the corner it was so cool to see how hard these guys were working just to hang on to their cars. Many times the backend would start to break loose (these guys were driving on the edge) and I would see them fight to keep control and avoid contact with the wall. Whenever I see the physics of these cars in action like this it makes me dream of Kaemmer's forthcoming Nascar simulation..." --David Cook In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote...

Your words betray the confusion and longing for driving perfection which fill your soul. Here's an idea. Be a man and use your name, give some detailed criticism, and compare GPL to something you consider superior so I have your frame of reference and can understand why you don't like it. You're certainly entitled to your unpopular opinion but if you chose to publicize it why not voice your criticism with intelligent rationale and factual details. Maybe you found a flaw in the game that I have overlooked or maybe we just have different tastes. Either way I'd sure like to know why you don't like it. Otherwise why post anything? Who cares about your ultimate opinion? I use this group to learn more about games not to collect data for polls. If every post was "__________ sucks!" or "_________ is great!" without any supporting facts then this ng would be useless to me. The only reason I bought GPL in the first place was because of the detailed positive reviews I found here. If the only posts where "GPL rocks dudes!" then I would not have bought it based on this ng. Conclusory statements without anything else are a waste of bandwidth. The reason you get flamed is because you fit the profile for a Class A Troll: (1) inflammatory post that contradicts the strong majority (taunting); (2) NO supporting statements for your controversial opinion (moronic); and (3) anonymous/hotmail (coward). This is a TROLL, a taunting moronic coward. Now, if you want to engage in a mature debate about GPL, which is certainly interesting, then expand on your criticism with facts/details/examples. You don't have to like it, just explain why you don't. Tell me what's wrong with the physics. Tell me what game does it better (good luck with this one). Just don't say "Pile of junk" if you don't want your ass flamed. -- Joe Marques 3_4_me <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > IMHO... everyone was talking about that GPL so I went and got it. As you can see, the general and widely held concensus here is that it's of very high quality. Since it's hard to reconcile that with your experience, I'm wondering if it was running properly on your system? Do you have a 3Dfx Voodoo or Rendition video card? If not, it's likely that you're running the game in software rendering mode. If so, this would go a long way to explaining your reaction. What are your system specs? S.

Actually, having an easy track to drive on doesn't necessarily mean that making setups would be easy. Nascar games have about 90% ovals, but still not everyone can make good stock car setups... Hey 3_4 I've read you're not really getting into GPL. Totally understandable. The cars ARE a bitch to drive, even when you do get used to the sim. So, I'd suggest you get the GPL 1.2 patch, then go to http://simracing.com/alison/gpl and get Alison Hine's Ferrari setups, which are extremely stable and easy to drive, yet are still fast. And if you still have trouble, trying running the Trainer cars to get used to the tracks. And finally, remember the old racing term: slow in equals fast out. Dark and unattractive graphics, compatibility only with video gear 2 to 3 years old, overly exaggerated physics and a severe degree of difficulty turned most folks off on the sim. Sorry. 2_Slow
"EldredP" wrote > Uh, neither is F12K, from discussions here...<g> From what I've heard, the biggest complaint with F12K is that it's too much fun, too soon, with too easy of a learning curve. The popular opinion around here seems to be that if you can win a race within a few hours, the game is too easy to bother with. In the world outside of this newsgroup, where masocism doesn't run rampant, most people would give up on a game if they didn't win a race within a few hours. If that means user adjustable AI then so be it, but making it impossible for the casual gamer to win a race is production suicide in the gaming market. > Actually, having an easy track to drive on doesn't necessarily meanthat making > setups would be easy. Nascar games have about 90% ovals, but stillnot > everyone can make good stock car setups... No, it doesn't make it easy I agree, but it makes it possible. Anyone can keep a GPL car on the track at Talladega, even with a bad setup. Then they can go back to the garage, make a change, and go see what that change did. Many people never got that far with GPL, they tried driving the demo at the Glenn, never completed a lap on that crappy setup, gave up and proclaimed "GPL sucks". How can you blame them?

Hehe... Yes, finishing in the top 6 is an achievement. I've won ONE novice race at Monza(Clark got caught in traffic<g>), and a full-length race when the faster cars dropped out. I can usually finish in the top 10, anyway. All I have to do is run a GP length race. In any case, your tyres are cold when you start, so a banzai lap isn't on. Do a few more laps, gradually increasing speed, and learning braking distances and apexes etc. Now, once your "comfortable" (a relative term in GPL), set yourself up for a blast. Come out of the Parabolica (the last corner, a r-h hairpin) in second. Once you're straight, really give it some wellie and change up through the gears. Assuming you can keep it on line, you'll be doing 180+ by the end of the straight. Fun, isn't it? -- David. "After all, a mere thousand yards - such a harmless little knoll, really." I think I place this GPL at about Nascar 1/ Indy Car racing 1 level, maybe even a rung below that. Hi three, You seem to have set off a fire storm. GPL is a very demanding sim to drive, very few folks can just jump in and fly around the tracks. I would like you to help us understand your posiiton by rating a few sims that YOU like. Give us a quick hint of your tastes so we can see where you are coming from. And then maybe point out a failing or two of gpl's. Do you dislike the sensitive handling? Do you not appreicate the way the tracks are presented...something like that. Two points to remember about GPL's graphics: one: the sim is two years old, compared to some recent releases, it will indeed seem somewhat plain. But I think most of the users here have looked past that to discover the sim underneath. two: most papyrus made sims need to user to correctly install the product and choose the proper video setup. some folks have mistakenly used the non3d software mode and have been very disapointed. I'd be glad to work with you to figure out WHY gpl is so bad. Maybe we all missed something. dave henrie

I think your last sentence sums it up best. You would think by all the comments flying around I had cursed someones mother, but in fact only posted comments about a game. I really enjoy Nascar 3, Nascar 2000 does not have the best game play, but has some nice eye candy. Need for Speed 5 Porsche Unleashed is really great, although it does not drive exactly like any porsche I have been in. Nevertheless, it is an awesome game. I also purchased F1 2000 which again in my opinion, rated up there with GPL. Granted I like stock car racing, and really dislike F1/Indy/CART, but I dont think that has any effect on whether I like a game or not. (though it may have managed to have some impact on my perception ofthe game) I have managed to install the Nascar 3 and the graphics are better than GPL (IMHO) It would be nice if N3 had some better Eye Candy though. As for the Tracks in GPL, street racing pretty much takes all the fun out of it. The car drives like it is a rollerskate on an ice skating rink. That is just not the way it should be. Well, without any down force there's nothing to make it stick. You really should know what you're driving before you call it wrong. You may not like it, but it doesn't make it inaccurate. Do you see any wings on the GPL cars? So how do you expect them to handle? What the hell do you think makes a "road magnet" magical forces or down force? This is the problem with uninformed critics, they mistake a well modeled feature is a flaw. Joe Marques

I dont think I ever said it was inaccurate. I said it was a pile of junk. If that is how those cars really handle, I would not drive one. I am sure no one in here can say 100% for sure, "yep it handles exactly like that" Yes it is true the wings and wide tires and such create the "Road Magnet" effect. Your problem 3, is that you "think" you know how a 1967 Grand Prix car handles - BUT you don't really know, do you? Most GPL enthusiasts are pretty familiar with the 1967 Formula One Season and have stayed up late many nights catching whatever footage they could find on the TV just to get a feeling for how it really was. You see - these cars do indeed break loose very easily, but it does not necessarily mean that you can't go very fast without sliding the ass around every corner to do it. It takes a lot of practice. Well you are right and that is one reason I stopped playing GPL since it took just too much time to stay up on the game. It is a great game tho, much better then any other game I have played in a long time. I do prefer games that are a little easier to pick back up myself. I do not think that the guys who are still playing as wacko. I will say on thing tho after playing GPL I find it hard to play any of the Nascar series. To me they do not come close in physics. I have been playing a lot of SCGT. It does have drawbacks, but overall its a game that I enjoy since I race a sedan, and I can pick the game up and be running back to my old form in 10 to 15 minutes after being away from it for a week. AHA! I think we're on to something here. The same premise which attracted me to the game repels you. GPL is indeed about an era where F1 cars were ridiculously powerful for the amount of grip they generated. With no aerodynamic downforce to speak of and tyres with a wide slip angle curve the way to take a corner faster than the next guy was to drive the car through it in a controlled drift (like they do on dirt or ice nowadays, although nowhere near as pronounced as on those surfaces and, indeed, in the game). An age where just driving the cars took courage and where virtuosity in the car was visible to the naked eye and not just on the clock (slight exaggeration ;-)). If this doesn't speak to you then, fair enough, you're best to leave it alone. There's no way you're going to be able to bring yourself to invest the time it takes to ascend GPL's ridiculously steep learning curve. Still, had you mentioned this up front some unpleasantness could have been avoided. When I think of Grand > Prix car I think "Road Magnet" not "slippery when moving." >You are driving a 1967 grand prix car. They have very small profiled tires that last for a few races so they are hard as a rock. (in fact hard as a '67 Firestone) They don't offer a lot of grip. There is no downforce at all and the cars have 400bhp and soft suspensions. Imagine yourself in a Fiat Panda with a 400bhp engine and rear wheel drive. Yes they feel like you are driving on ice. Braking isn't good either, but it just wasn't good in those days. It is hard and very frustrating in the beginning, I didn't like it at first either but once you get into the community and start sharing setups and stuff, and once you get close to 1.30 at Monza you WILL get addicted to it. GPL is the only game that learned me how to handle a car correctly. It simply feels how a car should feel. Beleive me, you should get into it. There is no reason for shouting a eachother. I was once in the same position as you where but now I'm an addict. So there are to options: 1: get rid of gpl now and don't look back or 2: get into it and get addicted, thinking to yourself how glad you are you can drive the best sim because you gave yourself time to get into it. If you give it a long tial period you'll start loving it, I'm sure of it. Read some books about how to drive a racecar (it's the only game that is so realistic that it helps when you read those) rent the movie "Grand Prix" and you're on your way. I don't wan't you to miss the joy of gpl.

I think alot of people got a bit of a shock when they first tried GPL. I was preparing myself for a "GP2 with old cars" and was some what surprised at how difficult it actually was. I dismissed the advice (before I tried it) in the GPL manual that indicates that everyone who trys GPL spins at first. My thought to this was "Maybe difficult for you mate! This boy has been around sims before though!" It was quite maddening at first to spend hours spinning round, crashing into everything, launching my car up every grass bank in western europe and generally not going anywhere fast. Something about GPL made me come back for more...and more. I'm glad it did because it gets better and better each day. I completely disagree with that statement. Wherever I go to any simracing-related website that has a webboard, or even N3.discussion, or RASF1, or RASI/RASC, GPL always come as the best there is when we talk about racing simulation, and GPL is always said as -the- title simracers enjoy the most from a hardcore and serious point of view. I thought that same thing as you. I am pretty sure that a V2 only supported up to 800x600 unless you were running in SLI mode. In fact it was the main reason that most people put 2 V2s in SLI mode. Yea, we were right in our thinking. Whew, thought I was losing my mind This is off of Toms Hardware page about the Voodoo2 one Pixelfx2 has now got enough performance to render in 800x600 fast enough, so that it makes sense using 4 MB frame buffer, enabling resolutions of up to 800x600, however it will be up to the card manufacturer if 2 or 4 MB frame buffer will be used you can use two Voodoo2 cards in your system, connected with a pass through cable. These two cards can do 'SLI' = Scan Line Interleaving. This is nothing else than that every odd line of the image is rendered by one, the even line is rendered by the other Voodoo2 card. This about doubles the performance and enables resolutions up to 1024x768 Gault <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8ei8c6$57j$[email hidden]... > > ymenard <[email hidden]> wrote wrote: > > > > Never had problem on my old PC getting the resolution up to 1024x768with

"Cliff Roman" <[email hidden]> wrote > I just think that ymenard is having a brain fade :) Another time, no I am not. Since GPL doesn't use Z-buffering, it can go 1 resolution higher than the maximum a single Voodoo2 can do (which is 800x600). It has been well known on r.a.s. since GPL is released. Without Z-buffer you have more framebuffer memory thus display higher resolutions. It's the same reason why a Voodoo1 can do 800x600 in GPL. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

One word: SODA. While I love GPL, I must admit I've been having a hell of a time lately with SODA, which I dug out from my "archives". People overlooked this gem because: (1) the graphics card support sucked [sound familiar?] and (2) until GPL came along, we weren't ready for such a wild driving experience. The first time I tried SODA it seemed uncontrollable. On the shelf it went, until I played GPL for a long time, and also moved up to a computer than could give me a high frame rate in SODA. With the high frame rate, and improvements in my driving technique, SODA is a whole new ballgame, and in some ways way more fun than GPL. I haven't even started to dabble with the high-power monsters yet. We all say that Kaemmer is a God, but I think we should give the small group at Software Allies (who developed the game for Papyrus) some credit as minor deities for building a fairly sophisticated multi-DOF physics model, and getting it out the door a year before GPL. Actually, I almost gave up on it at first. I had a P166, which was the minimum hardware requirement. I even had a Voodoo 2, and though my system was fine. It wasn't. I thought(and still do) that the minimum hardware given was false, and a waste of time. Even turning off ALL the graphics, I could only get about 11fps, which was NOT enough to enjoy the program IMHO. Unfortunately(or fortunately), I couldn't take it back. Comp USA didn't have a return policy. So it went on the shelf. When I got a new system about 6-8 months later, I could at least run the program... Not great, but I could get around the track with a passable frame rate. I think the people who had/have lower end systems have another barrier before they even get into the actual DRIVING... So, you jump into a discussion about resolutions in GPL, which you don't even play, and say that Ymenard - who probably has the name of every corner of every track memorized - is having a "brain fade" when he states something that is common knowledge to GPL regulars, and proclaim that "we were right" by citing some text from a web site. But I was the one arguing? Scott Sanford, the one who first raised the issue in this thread, is a playtester at Papyrus (or at least was, on the GPL project). You are the only one arguing. I simply posted something off of a website. They came back and said it did work in GPL, and since I do not play GPL, I accepted it and dropped it. Tracey A Miller <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:390cbd80$0$[email hidden]...

Yes I do. Since I'm sure you want me to expand on this I will. I tried Test Drive 6 and returned it quickly. After running it through the paces I found it lacking in ALL critical areas: graphics, sound, physics, control, and AI. The game is garbage. It's not garbage because it doesn't suit my tastes, it's garbage because it falls short in every measurement upon which I evaluate games and doesn't deliver the promises made on the box. The claims of realistic physics, solid AI, cutting edge graphics, and superb control were not just exaggerated they were false. I objectively and subjectively evaluated the game and it sucked on both levels ;-). When I say it's junk it's based on the fact that it delivered nothing close to the features and gameplay it claimed. I'd like to give greater details to support my review but it was far too long ago to remember. -- Joe Marques Cliff Roman <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GV%O4.929$[email hidden]... > Joe, do you think there are any games out there that are junk? > > > Joe Marques <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:HbZO4.31220$[email hidden]... > > That's my sentiments exactly. However, one could argue that the game is just "not for you" To me when someone says the game is junk, I take that meaning that it is junk by his opinion. After all, when anyone likes or dislikes a game.. it is always just their opinion. I honestly do not see why you are allowed to say that Test Drive 6 is junk and he can not say that GPL is junk. Because he is in the minority? Its still just an opinion. I know that I will be flamed for this, but alot of times when it comes to GPL, I agree with what David says. I have never really given GPL a chance. I have loaded it a few times but it is just not the type of racing game that I like to play. Just like I do not like to play motorcycle sim games ( I like Motocross Madness, but that is more of a arcade fun type of game, not a sim). So anyways.. I am not stuck on this GPL is "The Best!" mentality that some people have. Now being able to look at it from a neutral view (since I do not like it or dislike it, just never really played it) I can say that to me it appears that anytime someone bad mouthes GPL, everyone comes out of the woodwork to bash the poor guy. It is like all the GPL Lovers have made it a mission to prove to everyone else that it is a great game. That they need to "Convert" everyone into their beliefs. Why? Let everyone play the games they like to play. Let everyone enjoy the sims that they enjoy playing. It is not our job to dictate what games someone can play and enjoy. I used to find myself defending Papyrus and N3 alot. Then I decided, "What do I care if others like it, as long as I enjoy it" and now if someone bashes N3 or a game I enjoy.. who cares? Does not stop me from playing and enjoying it. Now once in awhile I may ask them why and see if maybe they are missing something, but if they simply do not enjoy the game. Then so be it. Now of course once in awhile my passions for a game will get me responding back to someone that does not like a game that I really like, but I really try not to. It is not my job to tell everyone what to play and enjoy. Joe Marques <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:dA6P4.31817$[email hidden]... > Yes I do. After all, when anyone likes or dislikes a game.. it > is always just their opinion. Yes Cliff, saying a game is junk is obviously an opinion, that's not my point. Disliking a game is one thing but saying it's a "pile of junk" is a different story. There are many games I dislike but not ALL of those are a "pile of junk." I am not so insecure that I must call all games I don't like "junk." If I play a game for an hour, don't really get into it, decide it's not for me, and never play it again then that's fine I just "don't like it." Should I then say it's a "pile of junk" based on my cursory experience? Shouldn't "pile of junk" status be reserved for games that I not only "dislike" but that I find worthless? I'm sure there are some jewels out there that just weren't for me (Rogue Spear to name one) but I'd be a fool to call them worthless. I save "pile of junk" status for just that: worthless crap. Saying a game "isn't for you" and that you "don't like it" is indisputable and should not be debated, however, taking your critique to the next level and saying it's a "pile of junk" is a serious claim that the game lacks PLAYABILITY and this is certainly debatable. If you chose to make such a claim I for one want some details/facts. Example: TD6 is poorly coded because it ran horribly choppy on my PII450/V3 (state-of-the-art at the time). Other games with FAR cleaner and more varied graphics ran MUCH faster. I could measure FPS in TD6 and compare it to Viper Racing. One could objectively conclude that TD6 was poorly coded bc of it's inability to run as smoothly on a state-of-the art system as Viper Racing. For this, and many other reasons I concluded that TD6 was junk. While one can always disagree with me, my rationale is solid and my information highly credible so my conclusion that TD6 is junk is not likely to be considered baseless or far fetched. It should also provide useful guidance to a potential buyer: "Beware of significant choppiness on a state-of-the art system." This is objectively considered a serious flaw for a driving game. This coupled with other flaws can easily earn the status: pile of junk. > I honestly do not see why you are allowed to say that Test Drive 6 is junk > and he can not say that GPL is junk. Because he is in the minority? Its > still just an opinion. I am not "allowed" to say TD6 is junk. All I argue is that IF I say TD6 is junk I should back it up. I think GPL is NOT junk because GPL delivers what it claims and has no serious flaws. TD6 is junk because it does not deliver by any standards and has serious flaws. I won't take the 500+ words to expand on this comparison now but I can if you'd like. I give DETAILS as to why something is junk and support it with facts/observations. Why post "GPL is junk" and not support the claim with anything? I really could care less if anyone else on the planet plays the games I like (other than the obvious fear of lack of sales issues effecting the genre I enjoy). If you don't like the game I'd hope you'd tell me why so I can understand your point of view. Not necessary but it would be nice. If you conclude that not only do you dislike the game but you believe it fails to deliver quality gameplay on so may levels that it is a "pile of junk" then back it up. It's not his opinion that annoys me. It's going beyond " I don't like it" and into "pile of junk" territory without any details to support this strong criticism that annoys me. > Why? Let everyone play the games they like to play. Let everyone enjoythe > sims that they enjoy playing. It is not our job to dictate what games > someone can play and enjoy. Then so be it. > > Now of course once in awhile my passions for a game will get me responding > back to someone that does not like a game that I really like, but I really > try not to. It is not my job to tell everyone what to play and enjoy. Nor is it my job to dictate what games should be played. I do believe, however, that people come here for opinions on games they are considering purchasing. I also believe I should provide support to games I believe are well designed and fun to play. Especially when someone calls such a game a "pile of junk" and doesn't say why. My posts are intended for those who may be influenced by this harsh review and not buy what I consider a great game. I worry that some poor sap may steer clear of GPL because one person who probably didn't really play it much feels compelled to not just say he doesn't like it but that it is also a pile of junk. I think it's far from junk and I certainly won't allow an unsupported conclusion to reside on this ng without comment. I'm not saying my opinion is right. I'm only saying that if you call a game junk then back it up. I'll be happy to debate you and let any prospective buyer decide who they find more logical, reasonable and compelling. This is certainly better than a buying decision being made on the statement "GPL is a pile of junk." --- Joe Marques > Joe Marques <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:dA6P4.31817$[email hidden]... > > Yes I do. What system do you have now Eldred? How many constant fps do you get now? Remember, it's very important to get a constant high fps, preferable a 36fps. I drive a lot worse when fps is lower (at the start of Monaco for example) Andre On 01 May 2000 00:51:29 GMT, [email hidden] (EldredP) wrote:

Sorry. "Most folks", maybe. Simracers, IMO, appreciate the challenge on offer and would drive a game featuring Goraud shaded polygons if it had the GPL engine. A10 Cuba and the original Su-27 Flanker games sold ok to their target market on the strenght of their flight model, not the eye candy. GPL was released before the TNT and GeForce chipsets, so it can hardly be expected to function with newer cards which do not support the API's it was written for. If some 3D FPS fan (are there any other games which actually benifit from these cards?) wants to check out GPL then tough luck: he either digs out a V2 or plays in software mode AFAIC. Jan. =---

I just do not agree that if a person calls a game junk that he should be forced to explain every detail in why he thinks so. We are all smart enough to know that it was one guys opinion. Now if he was a professional game reviewer, then of course he would need to explain himself, but this was just one guy that bought a game and did not like it for whatever reason. The poor guy posted that it is junk and then he had to write 20 more messages trying to defend himself. However, I do know where you are coming from since I am also passionate about certain games so I can see what point you are trying to make. You do not have to worry about his message scaring someone off :) Not when there is 1 bad message about GPL and about 2,000 good messages :)

I have recently been playing SBK (the old one, not SBK2000 which i believe is better). Though not a car racing sim, and in no way as good as GPL, I feel it is alot better than lots of other sims that people in RAS lend praise to. I didn't think i would like it but i was pleasantly surprised. Looks like the crowd who made it are Italian or something, judging by the credits. Soda had many strengths...one of the first sims to offer very realistic handling...(4 wheel drifting through the sweeping turns) Soda had internet multiplayer going before most other racing sims, but SODA was butt ugly! I loved playing it..as long as I had my Rendition card. It probably would have outsold GPL if it had shipped with 3dfx support...oh well. dave henrie [email hidden] wrote:

You were wrong for jumping into the discussion since you don't even play the game, and didn't realize who the players were in the discussion. "We" here on RAS consistently complain that we don't get enough feedback from the insiders at Papyrus, but whenever they do chime in, even to point out a simple little feature like Scott did, someone like yourself turns it into an argument. No big deal, we shouldn't take it so seriously, but I'd bet that Scott will think twice before he hits that send button the next time. No you can't Yes you can No you can't Again, ridiculous.

Sorry. Dark and unnatractive? Hardly. NFS3, that's dark. Not necessarily unattractive (is a race between a Ferrari 355, McLaren F1LM, Subaru WRC, a 1970 Camaro, and a 1969 Merc Cougar ever unnatractive? =) but the graphics are on the dark side. Overly exaggerated physics? Why don't you find someone willing to let you hop into a Lotus-Ford 49 or a Weslake-Eagle T1G and take it for a spin around the track and see how many times you spin out when you finally get the balls to nail it? Severe degree of difficulty? Well, why then (IIRC) the highest-ranked racing game ever in a NextGeneration article they had back in late '99? I think it placed 19th out of the top 50 (or was it 100?) GAMES - all games period!!! - of all time. I think very few others were even ranked - Gran Turismo comes to mind but not much else. It was beaten out by some of the all-time great games such as the Mario series, Zelda series, Tetris series, Final Fantasy series, etc etc. Because there isn't much more of a rewarding feeling in a racing game available!! Well when I can afford a wheel I will consider it:) BTW how does it (joyswitch) work? Is it just a physical switch? Surely you would have to chnge your controller in the control panel aswell? I was planning to put my wheel on a USB port (when I get it eventually!) and leave the stick on my games port. Its not so much the physics engine, but the base game engine itself. Papy has always said that they could not put in straight pit roads because it was a limitation of the game engine. The pit roads were always limited to the curvature of the actual race track. Well now you are seeing straight pit roads. This means that they are using a different game engine than the one they used for all the past Nascar games. Chris Bloom <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I wonder what system we will need to race N4? With all that eye- candy, "New" physics engine plus 43 or so cars it is gonna be pretty demanding on the ol' CPU. Nothing, but straight pit lanes were not possible in N3, so at least they updated the track code. Andre > >Chris > >* Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * >The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!

No - the Joyswitch works FINE. It's win95 that needs the current controller to be #1. That just means you have to re-load the config for the device you're using. If you have them saved, it's mot much of a hassle. And, you don't have to keep unplugging and re-plugging various controllers... Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Indeed Tracey. I love GPL. I have spent more hours on this game in the last year than on all other games put together and that is enough for me. If someone wants to put down GPL on here with a one-off post like this guy did then that's fine by me. I just move on to the next post. As someone else stated here. Would his post have dissuaded any potential GPL buyer from doing so considering the amount of pro-GPL posts that are made here? I too do seriously doubt it. One other thing. Perhaps when he referred to the 'pile of junk' he really meant the car he was driving after 5 minutes and 10 wrecks. :) By the way _3_4, if you ever do feel compelled to give it one more try - which happened to me on numerous occasions until it suddenly all fell into place - check your frame rate ALT-F and make sure its up near the 36 mark. Also make sure you are not driving one of the lesser powered cars. They can seem rather slow and do spin more easily I feel. <snip> -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) Ex member of the Spanish Inquisition No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

It's all in the ID assignments Eldred, I think. I have actually managed in the past to be able to have more than one joystick profile in controllers on win95 without getting that miserable 'not connected' status for one of them. Try changing both IDs away from #1 and then put the one you want back to #1 and see if it works. Then when you want to go back to the other try doing the same again, but this time put the other back to #1. I'm not sure that it always works, but it's worth a try. :) -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

I use a TM super sport on the gameport of an AWE64, and a sw prec pro stick on the USB Works fine in GPL, in SBK i can use the stick to steer and the pedals , however in some flight sims i have to remove the wheel Md Peter Ives wrote:
