First NASCAR 4 movie released for download

A two-minute NASCAR Racing 4 movie, about 33MB, was made available via Blackhole Motorsports. Posters described the race footage at Richmond and Dover and praised the shadows and realistic-looking cars, but most of the thread compared download times on cable, DSL and modems.

(first 20 sec., Clip is 2 min) then it goes into race scenes. first scene shows Mark Martin closing in from the rear bumper cam... Looks like Bobby Labonte in the background. Track is mid size and lit. (Richmond?) more shots of these cars running together including a nice driveby of Martin's car (this shot is stunning... there is a small pop on the front bumper as it comes closer,... either a lighting jump, or a level of detail pop.... either way, this looks awesome) next shot is a fixed camera showing the cars coming at you and turning into one...once again,... this looks *Very* good next is a rear bumper cam again as Mike Skinner closes in. The car with the camera loses it and takes a wild ride through the infield. (Nothing airborn, but quite realistic looking) You can see the weight shift as it spins. another short bumper clip, followed by a shot of cars going 3 wide... John Andretti goes on the apron and moves up a bit, as his car bounces. Mark martin on the outside goes into a slow slide, and Bobby Labonte cuts down to avoid hitting him. Cut to blimp cam of this as well. Then there is a very quick clip of skinners car spinning from the roof cam of Robert Pressley's car. Then there are more race shots, (A lot of bumper cams and blimp cams) Of note here is a roof cam shot from Mike Skinner's car... you can see a nice reflection line move across the hood as the car follows mayfield into the corner. cut to some shots of Tony Stewart. These shots really show off the shadows moving under the car (As the car circles the track, the shadow swings around to maintain the same direction... very nice looking) This is followed by a sequence of cars rotating on a black screen (Stewart, Park, Rusty Wallace, B. Labonte. Finally, back to more racing shots at Dover,... these show off the dynamic shadows more, as well as the hood reflection. There are a few shots of Tony and Bobby that look darn near video quality. Finally, it ends with a bumper cam shot looking back at John Andretti as he goes into a corner and loses it. I skipped over a lot, but I hope this helps... Overall impressions... WOW! I work on graphics for a living, so I'd like to think I have a fairly critical eye towards this stuff. The cars reflections are done in a realistic manner (You may not even notice them at first) The dynamic shadows also help add to the strong sunlight effect. Frame rate looked very smooth, but details such as smoke and dust are not present. Overall, this looks like a major leap forward,... much larger than the leap from 2 to 3. Assuming they are using a modified GPL engine, I can only wait and drool. Troy

The movie is about 2 minutes in length. It shows three cars racing at Richmond, with one car spinning coming off of turn 4 and sliding through the infield (from a bumber-cam perspective). It also shows a car looping it going into turn 1. Then the movie changes to Dover and again you see 2 or 3 cars going at it and two cars looping it going into/coming out of the turns. In the middle of the movie, they show shots of just the cars. It's pretty cool and I would highly recommend the download. -/-WW "Simon Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ES_R4.11160$[email hidden]... > Could someone post a little info about what the movie features and how > impressive it is please. :) > >

You have to remember that no matter how fast your cable is, you are also at the mercy of links in between you and the destination. I am on a cable that I have seen pull down files at over 200k/sec, but in getting the video from www.bhmotorsports.com I averaged about 15k/sec. Could be a link in between, could have been the server itself. If you do a trace on the server, it's location might have something to do with it, looks like it's located in Finland or something, not too surprising :-), meaning we here in Europe will have excellent connections, while you US based guys will suffer what we usually suffer, the Trans Atlantic bottleneck... Finally, a bit more discussion of the movie itself, instead of endlessly comparing download times like they were fast laps :-) I think it looks superb. The dynamic shadows are quite nice, and the cars look real, with just the right amount of shine. I'm surprised there was no smoke... hope that doesn't mean it's a performance killer at the moment, but then again the final release is many months away. The one thing I really like is the angle of the cars in the corners... hard to describe, but it just looks right when compared to real NASCAR racers slipping (not sliding) around the corners. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I am looking forward to this one. Stephen Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Naa, since I sometimes play games from the shop here, sorting out what ISP's to use is not OT :-) Stay clear of Eltele, it's cheap and you get what you pay for, .5 mbit line that's down a lot, and their connection across the Atlantic sucks even more...what more can you ask for Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

Yes, I noticed the cars actually look like they are on the track, not near the track. The movie looked as if I was watching TNN on Sunday. I was very impressed. Wonder what CPU/Video will be needed to get good FPS. I also hope it is an improvement on the Nascar 1 (2,3) sim that has just had graphics rehashed for the last few years. Makes me wonder what they could do with a IndyCar/Cart Racing 3. Too bad. SLG (Steve, who likes to turn more than left, but does not knock what other like!) [email hidden] wrote:
