Best older F1 sim for a slow PC

A poster whose PC was too slow for F1 2000 asked which older F1 game to choose and mentioned wheel calibration trouble with GP2. Replies recommended Grand Prix World/MGPRS2, IndyCar Racing II and fixing GP2, and debated whether GP3 would run on modest hardware. A side argument between Jo Helsen and Nos over why GP2 was a CPU hog became mildly testy.

I understand many feel that F1 2000 is the best out so far. I bought it, didn't like it, and returned it. (my computer was too slow to enjoy) What's the best out of the past F1 games. I've got GP2, but my wheel isn't working right with it. Should I got after Monaco, Official, or what? I assume there is new paintjobs available to download. What should I get? Thanks! -- -Brett Goodbye Greg Moore 1975-1999 "I will see you at the front, and wish me luck..." - Greg Moore Goodbye Adam Petty 1980-2000 "It's all about racing on the track." - Adam Petty Congratulations to Juan Montoya, 2000 Indy 500 Champ!

It gets really tiring to keep pointing this out: GP2 did not support 3D cards and that is the ONLY reason why it is such a CPU-eater. Of course GP3 might still be a resource-hog, but the fact that GP2 was has nothing to do with it. For some reason it says that the calibration range isn't great enough. It's a Logtiech Wingman...it works about once ever ten/fifteen times I try it. Also, F1 2000 was too fast for my computer also, which I'm sure GP3 will be as well. :( -- -Brett Goodbye Greg Moore 1975-1999 "I will see you at the front, and wish me luck..." - Greg Moore Goodbye Adam Petty 1980-2000 "It's all about racing on the track." - Adam Petty Congratulations to Juan Montoya, 2000 Indy 500 Champ! ymenard <[email hidden]> wrote in article <v9i_4.21483$[email hidden]>... > "Brett" <[email hidden]> wrote > > I understand many feel that F1 2000 is the best out so far. Come on, Francois -- he said his computer was too slow for F1 2000, which seems to be a pretty decent game on a mid-range machine (like my K6-2 400, for example), so do you REALLY think he's going to be able to even LOAD GP3??? Based on my own VERY limited experience, I'd recommend that he try downloading the F1WGP demo -- it felt VERY much like GP2 to me, and doesn't seem to be too hardware-intensive. -- JB In article <v9i_4.21483$[email hidden]>, "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote: > "Brett" <[email hidden]> wrote > > I understand many feel that F1 2000 is the best out so far. The reason for this is also why it will be a much better sim than F1 2000, lots more time and care has been spent creating it. I'm sure it will have more efficient physics and graphics engines. I am quite confident I will be okay with GP3 with my P2 350, though this might mean running 640x480 and compromising some graphical detail. ". . . though this might mean running 640x480 and compromising some graphical detail." Chris, Chris, Chris -- you apparently don't recall the joys of running GP2 on a 386-20 with all graphics options turned down, do you? The 486 era was humbled by GP2 also, if I recall correctly, and even when I moved up to a screaming P-100 system, GP2 still was unplayable with all graphics options enabled. Given that, I have no doubt that you WILL be able to play GP3 on your P2-350, as long as you don't mind something that looks like the graphic equivalent of the original IndyCar Racing (the first version of ICR, that is, which didn't even feature SVGA graphics). Eye-candy isn't everything, but if the graphics aren't convincing the simulation experience just isn't all that immersive when you get right down to it. How much fun it it to drive on a simulated track with, uh, nothing trackside? Surrealism versus simulation -- the next big RAS debate. <G> Or is there really THAT fine of a line between compromise and torture? -- JB In article <[email hidden]>, Chris Bloom <[email hidden]> wrote:

SCGT is a graphics pig, it chugs around turns (chop, chop, chop) when games with better AI and graphics are silky smooth. F12K is stuck with that crappy engine as its base. ISI also never solved their brain damaged AI bug, it still ruins F12K for me. Imagine how much more choppy SCGT or F12K would be with real AI calculations taking place? I hope GP3 runs similar to GPL: superb physics, good graphics, unbelievable AI and smooth consistent framerates. It's the only way to race. At last, a fight! Normally my comments are much too moderate to start a flamewar, but when you meet the right person on the other side, that seems no obstacle, hehe. 1) GP2 is graphically and physics-wise more complex than the two examples you mention. And it has AI. <G> Turn graphics down and it runs smooth. Which is the same as "give graphics to a 3D card and it runs smooth". Which is the same as "since GP3 will use 3D cards there is no reason, at this point and without further knowledge, to expect a slow performance _based on the GP2 example_." See? With some common sense and a relative lack of preoccupation it is not difficult at all. It's people who get some sort of enjoyment out of slashing GP3 (or "X" for that matter) who will tell you that GP3 HAS to be slow. It's as if they WISH it to be slow. I mean, what is more fun than being negative about sims that have not been released yet? (and that won't be like GPL ;-) ) As I said, it is a possibility that GP3 will require a serious system. But at this point there is ZERO information to support or deny it. What you think just depends on your attitude and nothing else. Do you think WSC will be slow, for example? 2) in your previous post you compared GP2 to *F1RS* which I'm sure runs great on your PC in software mode. <G> Your's, JoH

I can relate to your situation, Brett. Here's my hardware setup: P150 MMX CPU 32 MB RAM 8 MB ATI Rage 98 PCI Video Generic 2W Opti 16-bit Sound Card (to 4W Speakers, & Line out to 30 Watt Stereo) El-Cheapo non-FF Liang PC Wheel ($49.99 CDN @ Wal-Mart) :-) That being my humble box, I've managed to get all these running with acceptable eye candy but most importantly - smooth animation: NFS II & III Monster Truck Madness I & II (Yee-HAW!!) NASCAR 1999 and (don't laugh) OF1R I'll go on record as saying that IMHO, OF1R is enjoyable for what it is, and considering my paltry system, it's more important to get 24 FPS and crappy physics than to get 6 FPS and body roll from revving the engine. :-) Give it a whirl - you'll be able to get it for next to nothing if you look in the clearance bins.
