GP3 called a failure, compared with Papyrus's NASCAR sequels

A French poster called GP3 a bad console-style game that was just GP2 with 3D graphics and rain. Tracey Miller argued that Papyrus had done the same with NASCAR Racing 3 and NASCAR 99 without facing such criticism, while others replied that N3 was also criticised but added online play and force feedback. Simon Brown said GPL beat GP3 on almost everything except wet weather and accessibility.

So producing "shit" software is ok, as long as you do it regularly? "EldredP" wrote > Maybe because Papyrus didn't take 4 years between programs?
Well, blah blah rationalization blah, N3 still has some of the same problems we've complained about since NASCAR 1 (still no I in the AI after 5 years, just to name one), and GP3 also has some new features (weather) that were not in GP2, so both of those arguments go directly out of the window. After the "commitment to the cause" (GPL) turned out to be a financial failure, there is no way I could see Hasbro giving Crammond a blank check to do everything he wanted in GP3. Revolutionary games like GPL aren't going to be published anymore after that disaster, so they will have to evolve in stages like the NASCAR series has. Crammond is releasing stage 2 now, finally, and hopefully if GP3 sells well he will be able to give us the sim we all want in stage 3 with GP4. I just think we need to stop acting like spoiled brats because we didn't get everything we wanted right now. Don't confuse these people by saying it has 3D graphics. Almost all the graphics in the game are poor 2D bitmaps. It's GP2 with a poorly implemented Direct 3D rasterizer. I do agree with you, it does look like a bad PSX game. What a shame.

Any company can make a bad game if their deadlines are too tight. GP3 is probably just like N3, Kaemmer's name doesn't even show up in the credits for N3 as he was already working on N4, and Crammond is probably working on GP4 while others put out this "patch". We put up with 5 different patches from Papyrus (BGN, 99, CTS, N3, Legends) - sold to us as games or add ons - while we wait for NASCAR 4. So why can't we accept one minor upgrade release from Crammond? They have to get some revenue coming in if he is going to give us the ultimate modern F1 sim we are waiting for; Papyrus isn't going to do it, and EA couldn't do it if they wanted to.

Believe me, I understand *exactly* how you feel, because I felt the same way about NASCAR 3, it was a huge disappointment to me after they set the expectations at the "GPL physics" level. But I was bashed and called a troll for expressing those feelings. People said things like "yeah, it may be just another N2 patch but Papy can use the money for making N4". But now when Crammond releases a less than revolutionary sim, everyone says "don't buy it, warez it, they don't deserve a dime!" Man, finally someone said it! Strangely reminescent of Papyrus and Nascar games. N3 is just a rehash of an old game, with better graphics. I still like it and enjoy playing with it. I think of GP3 in the same way now. Tracey Miller wrote:

I think my disappointment was heightened by the fact that I had tried the "GPL" version of NASCAR some time before that and _loved_ it, and to go back to the same old "N2" version seemed such a massive backward step from what had been developed up to that point. I'm sure the decisions were made for the correct reasons at the time, but doesnt mean I have to like them or finance them. >But we got better 3D support, FF, some new tracks (don't know if they were >in the expansion packs for N2/N99, those weren't on sale here), body roll >and various tweaks (and this is important) requested by it's user base. We got better 3D support, FF and new tracks _free_ with GPL. It's all down to definition, but by my estimation such things are an incremental improvement, a patch or at best an add-on pack. They don't consitute a whole new product. Of course anything is possible, I've seen the FIFA soccer game sold now many times over with a different number on the end and some new features, but if you soil your market with many releases of questionable value and/or difficult to distinguish from the previous one you will pay a penalty at some point in the future. The question was, why are people giving Crammond so much more grief than they gave Papyrus. I offered one suggestion. And, if you remember correctly, people WERE pissed at the 'incremental' approach to Nascar 2-3, and the CTS, etc. I wasn't going to buy N3 until the price came down. I don't have force feedback, and the graphics 'extras' that people said were in it just wasn't worth paying full price IMO. I ended up buying it because someone created a benefit *I* wanted - I could convert the tracks to GPL. No, it's NEVER ok to create "shit" software. Interesting question and one I didn't initially ask myself... I was disappointed Sierra/Papyrus made N3 an intermediate release instead of the first in the series to use the "new" simulation engine also features in GPL. But we got better 3D support, FF, some new tracks (don't know if they were in the expansion packs for N2/N99, those weren't on sale here), body roll and various tweaks (and this is important) requested by it's user base. When the released version showed problems various issues were patched. Two things, the sense of dialog with the creator and the patching, which are not present with Crammond products so far. Furthermore Papyrus had already proved to be "committed to the cause" (for want of a better expression <g>) by releasing GPL and N3 was and is still the best Nascar sim around by quite a margin. The latter might change dramatically in the near future. Crammond seems oblivious of what simracing has evolved into after he released GP2 (which was good for it's day). His track record of non-commitment to the user and this half-hearted update which still sports numerous shortcomings people were grumbling about since Gp2 started to age give him zero credit with me for his next release. I would very much like to see him bounce back with a future release, but from what we know of the current planning at Hasbro-Microprose it doesn't look good, IMO. So, in summary, if Papyrus really gets more credit in this group than any other developer, it's because they've worked harder at maintaining their relation with it. I agree. Regardless wether I will be happy with GP3 or not (personally i think I will), it doesn't look good for people who expect a total rewrite of some of the core aspects of GP3 in GP4/5. JoH

That's what I thought. Also: If you're not getting the same graphics as in the screen-shots on various websites, something is wrong with your PC-setup, mine look absolutely gorgeous (Geforce1, v5.22 drivers). Dennis.

GP3 is an excellent entertaining game, and lots of fun with some very neat features, but I can't believe what you just said. The only area I can find where GP3 is ahead is wet weather and accessibility. GPL gets my vote for graphics, physics, FF, sound, depth, longevity, atmosphere, multiplayer and 3d engine.

I don't know where that message appeared on your news reader, but on mine it is shown right under the message I'm replying to and indented once. If it's just appeared on it's own in the middle on nowhere, that's because you haven't downloaded the header of the message I'm replying to. OE only downloads the first 300 headers by default when you log on, so you may well have missed some. Keep hitting "headers" until it stops. Anyway, I'll try to remember to include the previous message in the future. "Greg Cisko" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YyXf5.8603$9%[email hidden]...

After I read the messages, I mark all of them as read. The only messages that show up are the new ones. Not all 2000+. -- [email hidden]
