It's not surprising that he would better his performance after practising on a simulator. Pilots, in both commercial and military lines, have been
used flight simulators for years, and they are now capable of dealing with scenarios which they could never have faced before.
I imagine that soon, all racing drivers will learning the tracks in a racing simulator. Perhaps not quite yet, but soon. I'd be surprised if they sat
in front of a desktop PC to do it however. They're more likely to use a full working cockpit, just as pilots do, which can be configured to feel all
the G-force effects they should feel out on the track.

F1 drivers learning new tracks on PC sims
Reports that F1 drivers prepared for the new Indianapolis circuit using F1 2000 or console games led to discussion of drivers using sims, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. with NASCAR Racing 3 and claims that Jacques Villeneuve used GP2 in 1996. Mercedes truck racers were said to use Synetic's truck sim, and the thread debated details of Villeneuve's 1996 Australian GP.
Automated summary.
On one of the radio stations here they interview a chap called Neil Mallard,
who I believe is a journalist for one of the European TV stations, on the
friday before and the Monday after each GP.
Yesterday he was asked how the drivers would cope with a new track like Indy
and he replied that they had been practicing on their playstations, which
can only mean they are playing F1 2000.
I also remember a few years back, JV used GP2 to learn some circuits.

Just like Earnhardt Jr. used NASCAR 3 to learn the shift locations for
Watkins Glen and Sears Point.

And what a result it had! I remember JV having trouble on most new
tracks. Untill suddenly, starting from Hungary and Spa, he started
getting pole positions and wins!! And that was JUST after the release
of GP2 which he confirmed he was using.

Umm, Jaques would have one his very FIRST GP if he didn't have engine
trouble at Australia and have to let Damon pass him near the end of the
race. He still came in second. He also had already used GP2 for that
race, so I'm not sure what you mean by "the release of GP2" after Hungary
- he had it from the beginning.

The only problem with that is that Albert Park isn't in GP2. IIRC GP2 is
based on the '95 season, and the Australian GP was in Adelaide that
year. '96 was everyone's first year in Melbourne.

GP2 was based on 1994 which indeed had no Melbourne. Also, GP2 was
released in AUGUST '96, right before the Hungarian and Belgian GP
which JV both won (?) after doing bad the races before.

I think your answer is dead wrong, he did not
damage the car himself but was losing oil pressure
due to an oil leak which you could see leaking on the
nose of damon hill's car who was behind him. He set
the pole at that race and would have won it no problem
exact for the pits telling him to slow, better for the team
to get a 1-2 than only one of thier cars finishing.

The drivers of the Truck-Championship are already using Synetic's Mercedes
Benz Truck Racing http://www.mbtr.de between the heats on each race weekend.

I always thought the oil line was broken because Villeneuve went off and
damaged it?

More than 1 year after GP2 I think.

Hence my original comment - it was widely reported at the time by the

to do with learning that F1 cars were a bit more fragile that way than
CART cars.

though the car was given quite a hammering and the oil problem then
began to develop.

race and there was no physical damage to the car
itself other than it developing an oil leak which i'd
assume was simply a mechanical fault.
Thanks for the insight.

I'd expect the drivers could get some valuable Indy knowledge from F1 2000.
It's a great sim!

I never believed that, because if you go back and watch the
video you'll see that Hill's car was already starting to be covered
with JV's oil _before_ JV went off.
Anyway, to get back on-topic, Eddie Irvine said on the Letterman
show a few days ago that he'd been playing the Indy track on
the playstation.
