GPL dominance of the group and NASCAR 4 expectations

A joke about the newsgroup returning to wall-to-wall GPL posts after the GP3 and NASCAR Heat releases led to banter over GPL's staying power. Users anticipated NASCAR Racing 4 using a GPL-derived physics engine and imagined GPL tracks converted for it, while David G Fisher's claim that nobody played GPL drew angry replies. Others pointed to GPLRank and leagues as evidence of its popularity.

lemme just take a stab in the dark and guess that, oh, perhaps, could it be because GPL is the the most badass sim availiable, and GP3 and Neckcar in Heat (LOL) are cheap immitations, which quickly hit the dusty shelf in the back where most people keep useless software? Its funny how some of these software titles are the best thing since sliced bread for a week or so, then *POOF* they dissappear. The next threat to the throne will be N4 (and I think N4 will be better than everyone is assuming). Since it's using a stockcar oriented version of the GPL physics engine, expect a harder-to-drive sim in realistic mode, and throw in dynamic shadows, reflective car surfaces, and what appears to be (finally) an 16-million color palette for paintjobs. Hopefully, they'll be modelling the individual body shapes (as subtle as they are), not to mention the Dogdge Intrepid. After N4, WSC is gonna be released. I have high hopes for WSC because it looks like they're building it to be expandable by the end-user community. Obviously the reason is that people who were talking about GP3 and NASCAR Heat are now playing those games, now that they are available everywhere for purchase and have no time to post here. As for the GPL crowd, they obviously aren't playing GPL and have an obscene amount of time on their hands to post about what a "badass" sim it is. ;-) "rik anthrax" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:yK7y5.19187$[email hidden]... > lemme just take a stab in the dark and guess that, oh, perhaps, could itbe > because GPL is the the most badass sim availiable, and GP3 and Neckcar in > Heat (LOL) are cheap immitations, which quickly hit the dusty shelf in the > back where most people keep useless software? > Its funny how some of these software titles are the best thing sincesliced

I too have been playing GP3 alot recently..I love it...best modern F1 sim you can get. However I will proberly drift back to GPL again (as I always do). F1Rs..for a while..then back to GPL GP500 for a while..then back to GPL SBK2000 for a while..then back to GPL. GP3 now..but may drift back to GPL.(but GP3 has me more hocked than the others..I love modern F1) GPL....and GP3...me thinks will be with us for a long time. I think the folks who are racing Nascar Heat NOW will be 'ready' for N4 when it comes out. I have sooo many bad oval habits that I can "get-away-with" in the Nx Papy sims. But when N4 rumbles our way, folks like me will be hurting. i.e. at Daytona I pulled a standard N3 move, let the guy through in turn 3 but swing behind and below him and take the line through the tri-oval.. I jerked too quickly on the wheel before I knew it..the physics in NH took over and my nose was planted on the infield wall. I "see" lots of N3 guys in the multi-player arenas chatting bout Heat. I get the consensus that most will skip Heat and go right to N4. Boy will they be suprised when the hardcore-mode trained Heat drivers blow by. dave henrie

You did a good job of using a comment taken out of context. Bendito accused me of having a chip on my shoulder regarding sims. I was explaining to Bendito that I would never have a chip on my shoulder over something as irrelevant (in the big picture of life) as a sim. I enjoy them, I'm amazed by them, I contribute a tiny bit to them by beta testing (I'm doing that right now, and I always do my absolute best). BUT, I don't get upset by discussing them at r.a.s. You might want to rethink that. I upgraded to an Athlon 800 and a V5 5500 this past weekend and I found out that GPL has AWESOME graphics. Sure it is not flashy, but real life isn't flashy either. Then stop obsessing over it. If you don't get upset, why do you have to keep protecting your thoughts every 5 seconds? If sims are not important to you, then don't put people down that the game IS is important to. Some people LIKE having fun in life, and GPL is an outlet for this. Just let it go. Sorry, mate, but that was *not* the post to which you responded. You replied to Markus' original post which noted the current frequency of posts in this newsgroup. His implication, unstated but rather obvious, is that GPL is the best sim. So what? Nothing wrong with expressing an opinion like that. He didn't say anything bad about other games and certainly did *not* insult fans of other sims, unlike you. >Yet my post was horrible and cruel. LOL. Your words, not mine. >"Yeah, I know. You find mocking other people's hobbies and obsessions to > be far more important. Give it a rest." -- Bendito. > >Why didn't you say that to the author of the above post? As for rik anthrax's post (i.e. the one you've quoted at the top of your post) I thought Robert Allen's reply was the perfect response to it and therefore I didn't feel the need to personally respond. Here is Robert Allen's post just in case you can't be bothered finding it: "Obviously the reason is that people who were talking about GP3 and NASCAR Heat are now playing those games, now that they are available everywhere for purchase and have no time to post here. As for the GPL crowd, they obviously aren't playing GPL and have an obscene amount of time on their hands to post about what a "badass" sim it is. ;-)" An excellent reply with a cheeky smile on his face. He responded with a pretty reasonable explanation and then engaged in some good-natured ribbing of the GPL crowd. A shame you can't follow his example. >GPL is the best two year old sim nobody plays. Like a broken record... Bendito;

Hmmmm, think what it would be like with 43 online .. LOL. I'm sure I read/heard that N4 would have 43 online. Jason. Remco Moedt wrote:

>Stop your whining that your party was ruined. Could you elaborate on that, DGF? Seems to me that you're the one who is whining about his "party being ruined" because people still play GPL despite it being (gasp) a couple of years old. You seem to think that "newness" is one of the most important qualities in a sim, when, in a great one, it is largely irrelevant. -- Cheers! Graeme Nash

Somebody *did* reply to the other post. If nobody plays GPL, then why are there so many entries on GPLRank? Why are most of the leagues SRO? Why do people continue to talk about it almost two years after it was released. SOS37 is newer, and *it* doesn't get discussed very often. Please stop generalizing. Some of us who like GPL have OTHER games, too. I also don't slam people who like Gp3, Need for Speed, or even RC2000 for that matter.
