Praise and criticism of NASCAR Heat as MGI's first effort

Regular Racer praised MGI's NASCAR Heat as better than Papyrus's efforts, which others disputed, citing frame rate problems and AI issues under yellow flags. The thread covered GeForce2 MX performance, running the game under Windows 2000, and Australians hoping for a V8 Supercar sim. Many expected NASCAR Racing 4 to supersede it.

<Joking!> Seriously though, considering this is your guys FIRST NASCAR game, you guys at MGI did an EXCELLENT job! IMHO, you've already beat Papyrus (who've had 3 chances to get it right) and EA Sports which have what, 2 or 3 tries? Man if you guys put THIS GOOD a product out on your FIRST attempt, I'm really looking forward to your sequels! -Cheers!

I would not call it excellent its OK and will occupy manys time until N4 releases. NH has poor framerates even with high end systems, and quite a few bugs with the AI . Lets say it was a fine first release. Needs work to be deemed excellent.

Yes, it would need a lot of work, even for offline racing with the AI. I have pretty much given up on trying to run any kind of season due to the ai problems under yellows and especially while trying to pit under yellow. Too bad, I was kind of looking foward to it and was waiting for the patch for that reason. It's a pain in the butt to have a great racing going , yellow come out, drop down to pit road and get slammed by a couple of ai cars, the go sliding sideways down pit road and get promptly black flagged for speeding. Very dissappointing, I had hoped the patch would fix this. I disagree somewhat on the framerate issue though, I think they did a pretty good job with the graphics being able to run decently on even mid level systems. Some more graphics tweak options would have been nice for those with lower end systems. -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends ICQ# 74084566 "Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8qjoc4$lvq$[email hidden]... > I would not call it excellent its OK and will occupy manys time until N4 > releases. Yes Don, I have to keep in mind I'm using W2K,and experiance FPS hits at certain locations on various tracks, even with the GeForce2 MX GPL and N3 run smooth. Perhaps the NH people should have made better attempt to optimise toward W2K being thats the direction of the Windows OS . I was rather surprised of the popup in NH stating not for W2K being a new release.By the way I totally agree with the AI yellow flag issue I just do not know why they ignored it in the patch :(
You say that MX runs N3 pretty good? I have been holding off on a new vid card, still running my V3000, primarily for N3. I suspect they didn't ignore the ai yellow flag issue, probably are well aware of it even prior to release, I bet it's something that would take a major overhaul to fix, and they have elected not to mess with it. Just a guess on my part, -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends ICQ# 74084566 "Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8qjt5v$ngk$[email hidden]... > Yes Don, I have to keep in mind I'm using W2K,and > experiance FPS hits at certain locations on various tracks, > even with the GeForce2 MX GPL and N3 run smooth. > Perhaps the NH people should have made better attempt > to optimise toward W2K being thats the direction of > the Windows OS . How can Heat be compared to N3? N3 was a rebuild on the N2 engine, which is several years old. And they did a pretty darn good job with it, including the internet play that was included and patched with it. There is no way Papy could have produced a 6dof Nascar sim 3 or 4 years ago, just would not have been possible with the hardware of the time. They did an awesome job producing GPL a couple of years ago, a sim which remains to this day very popular with some hardcore sim racers. Comparing Nascar Heat to N3 is just not fair. If you compared it to anything Papy has on the market, you'd have to compare it to GPL, which imho still beats Heat in the physics department. Yes, I agree MGI did a good job for their first Nascar sim, it ain't without it's troubles though. Quite frankly, if N3 had been released with some of the problems Heat has, Papy would have caught hell for it on these newsgroups. -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends ICQ# 74084566 "Bruce Kennewell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:39cd8fd3$[email hidden]... > Papyrus had "three chances"??? > What is this....baseball? > > -- > Regards, > Bruce Kennewell, > Canberra, Australia. > --------------------------- > > Regular Racer <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:zscz5.1142$[email hidden]... > > <Joking!> Seriously though, considering this is your guys FIRST NASCAR > > game, you guys at MGI did an EXCELLENT job! This may mean little from some schmoo that imported the title from the US, but thoroughly enjoying NH from a single player perspective. It's not a big MP game in Aus, but I'm more than satisified with the product and look forward to NH2. Cheers, Rod.

I'm running a GF2, and N3 *runs* great, but the jaggies are horrible. If I had known that Heat would be one of those games that would soon be collecting dust, I would have stayed with the V3 until N4 came out, waiting for the GF2 prices to come down. If someone knows a setting for the Asus V7700 that will reduce the jaggies, I'm open to suggestions.
Yep, was surprised. I had a V3 also and went with the Inno Tornado. Only $104 Heatsink and Fan included at Ocie.com. Frankly I did not think it would perform as well as the V3 on Papy sims. Also when I mention the drop of FPS in NH I'm talking a full field in W2K. This is a fine card.By the way I'm also running a 566 @ 850 and the Artic Silver does seem to make a difference.
I look more forward to N4 and the WSC ! I'm buying time with NH, the problems in the game/sim prevent me from getting too serious with this thing its fun to kick around a little. Its better then N3, with the exception of multiplyer, but then again, it should be given the age of the N3 model. Its really not a fair comparison. N4 vs NH would be the most logical comparison given the time frame. "> look forward to NH2. > > Cheers, > Rod.

What's the deal with Fraps and NH, I can not get it to display the fps while running Heat, I have tried running it with Fraps minimized and not minimized, same results. I can see a light flickering in the upper left corner where the fps should be displayed, but no where near enough to read what the fps are. Anyone else experience this? I'm using a V3000 card. Fraps works fine in F12000 for me. -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends ICQ# 74084566

Well, you're both right, but the convergence of the two lines has taken a big step with 'full' support for DirectX in Win2K and the inclusion of NT networking innards in WinME. The next OS is *supposedly* going to cover all bases with slightly varying versions for different applications. The shell is already the same, all they need to do is homogenize the kernel and they will be pretty much there. So, saying Win2K is where things are going for a gaming OS is not correct, though one can see how the confusion came about. ~daxe
