SimBin announces GT Legends historic touring car sim

A poster linked the FIA Historic Racing announcement of SimBin's GT Legends, based on historic GT and touring cars from the 1960s and 70s. Posters mocked the poor translation and the lack of period tracks, and debated whether saloons such as the Mercedes 300SEL 6.8 and the Capri made good sim material. Others defended them as serious racing cars, and some drifted into a discussion of GT4 on the PS2.

Sounds clueless. They babble on abt. "Yoken" Maas (I presume they mean the great German driver Jochen Maas) and duelling Mercedes-Benz 300SLs, which were ten years gone in the time-frames mentioned in the squib ('65, '75). Too bad abt. the lack of historic tracks (I would KILL for some period tracks--Solitude, Riverside, Zandvoort, Bridgehampton, Lime Rock, Oulton Park--if they were compatible with GTR), but if I never see another Ford Capri again it'll be too soon. Somebody seriously raced 300SE sedans? Sheesh, they might as well race 170Ds, Checker Marathons, or Trabbies. Not the stuff great sims are made of.... "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:tbQ5e.59903$[email hidden]...

Well, it is a European historic sports car series. I mean, we're talking about the same group of people who consider the Escort a classic racing car. =)
OTOH, I remember seeing Jim Clark driving the sh*t out of a Lotus Cortina once - electrifying! "jason moyer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Since this is a grand touring sim, I don't see the problem, and I would bet that any of these would be an interesting handful to drive and would definitely be the stuff of a great sim. The battles on the European touring car circuit in the early to mid 70s were legendary, and I would be happy to turn a few laps in any of those cars. http://www.amg-classics.de/4650.html http://www.amg-classics.de/4866.html Stephen

The Cosworth Capri vs. the BMW 3.0 CSL "Batmobile" was THE battle in GT/Touring Car racing in Europe in the 70s. It was a seriously good racing car by the time it matured. Considering what we North Americans had done to the poor Mustang by the time the mid-70s arrived, I would argue that the boys from Cologne actually made a much better pony car than we did in that period. From '75 on the roadgoing Capri lost its way, but what car didn't? Stephen

The original RWD Escort RS2000 won the World Rally Championship and the Escort had a pretty strong record in 1970s touring car racing. Having had a brisk drive in an original Escort race car, I would say it's a pretty well sorted car, easily the equal of the contemporary Alfa GTs and BMW 2002s. Stephen

Fair enough, personally I couldn't be *rsed with constant PC upgrades so I switched to PS2 for my gaming (driving games third person shooters being my favourites) some time ago. Thankfully there are such games as GT4 out there, as without it the best driving games on the PS2 wouldn't really amount to much. Indeed, GT4 is the only way I'm going to (electronically) race a group-B rally car or a GT race car on the PS2, at least until Enthusia. And there's nothing better than a T16 round some pokey street course. Well, other than a Maxi 5 Turbo - truly mad kit! Having said all this, I've yet to find a really good F1 sim on the PS2. Not sure why, but they're all quite weak for some reason or other. And at the risk of generating list threads... My favourite PS2 driving games to date: GT3/GT4 - not much between them, except GT4 has better tracks. WRC3 - not got WRC4, but 3 is absolutely excellent for rally. MX unleashed - V.good dirt bikes, with blend of "just get on and ride" fun thrown in. Total Immersion Racing - If you can get past the seriously poor GUI, set the cars up properly and use a wheel then the racing & physics are actually very good. Downhill Domination (bet you lot have never heard of that one) - it's not great but DH MTB is what I do at the weekends, and a couple of the technical tracks aren't half bad - too arcade like though. I've got many, many other driving games, a couple of wheels etc, but these few are the ones I'd recommend to anyone making the switch...(other than Downhill D' as that's rather unique to me I think!). Glad I could oblige!
> Wish it were a true historic sim, but having the cars is good enough. Mee too. The Historic championships run on mostly modern tyres, so the car handling will also be very different than that it was when the cars were raced for real. And having the tracks would be nice, I haven't got much interest in racing mostly slower-than-GTR cars on the same chicane-infected tracks. -- Mika Takala

In all seriousness and fairness, have you tried it? I can understand some trying and not liking. Fine, that's ones choice and opinion. But a lot of folk just refuse to consider it at all, presumably from close minded PC snobbery. Again, that is their choice ... and likely their loss. If you haven't, try it with a decent wheel (Logi Driving Force Pro, or even the basic DF feedback wheel). Take a car like the Miata on the 'Ring. Or probably dozens of others you have experience with. Many owners and experienced racers say it is convincing. Take the Yellowbird Ruf Porsche and feel the responsiveness of the back end. The AI sucks. There is no cockpit shown. There is no damage. Maybe this kills it for you. So be it. But there is an whole lot of good stuff that remains. And no game (which all of our sims are) does the rest quite like GT4.
This is the game (they're all "games", even the simulations are games) that made me trot out on Sunday and buy a PS2/GT4 pack and an adapter so that I can run it through my LCD monitor. After running several laps of the 'Ring in my petite Autobianchi Abarth I popped the DVD of "In Car 956" into the player and checked the real-world against the game. Grand Prix Legends - a fixture on my series of PC's since its release - has finally been removed from my computer and, along with its NASCAR siblings, consigned to the archives. I agree completely with your (and many other's) feelings about PC snobbery and I don't give a rat's arse about the lack of cockpit (can you imagine the work required to tailor 721 different dashboards?!!!), the lack of intelligence in the AI or the lack of damage. GT4 provides me with exactly what I like with regard to a racing game: immersion, entertainment, a whole lot of fun and enormous longevity. Bruce. Wait till you're hammering down the mulsane straight in a Gt1 car... Marvellous. AndyC
I aspire to own the Chaparral 'D', Andy, and take it around the circuit on which it won....Nurburgring. :) Bruce. "AndyC" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:d3ihk0$3d4$[email hidden]... > > Wait till you're hammering down the mulsane straight in a Gt1 car...Marvellous.
