Maybe it depends on the soundcard. I have a MX300 and love the sound of N4.
You can hear the compression braking of the motor. I guess its just
personal preference.

NASCAR 4 demo sound quality complaints
Users disagreed about the NASCAR 4 demo's sound, with some praising engine braking sounds and others hearing only a buzz at low revs. Eric Busch explained that missing pitch-shifting on SB16 cards and poor quality under Windows 2000 were being addressed for release, and asked users with SB Live problems for details.

quite liked the sound from NH, but the sound in N4 just didn't seem to
fit it. I was playing it last night through headphones so that may be
part of the reason...
The rest of the demo seems alright though. I imagine it would be good
with an RS shifter. :)

Its not goint to sound like a 185kw HSV doing 5000rpm when its a 700hp
engine doing 9000. From the in-car cameras i've heard, its pretty accurate.

The shifter sounds like a
proper "clunk" when changing between gears, but I ONLY get engine noise
at high RPMs -- at low to mid RPMs, all I get is a droning buzz, and
sometimes it is accompanied by a "clicking" sound, like a sound file
looping or something.
This is the ONLY problem I'm having with the N4 demo at the moment.
VERY frustrating. I hope they fix it before the real demo is released.

I hope Mr. Tom Pabst (@HighGear) to make sounds for N4 demo
like did with N3 and GPL. He's sounds are really cool and realistic!

I've been puzzled by comments like this. There are a few glitches, but the
basic engine revs and shifting I find to be excellent... my new headphones
may help. Old ones died and I was forced to invest in some Sennheiser
HD580's. Wonderful sound quality.
If I have any complaint about sound it's that when overtaking the sound
doesn't seem to be in the right place. This may be a complex lag thing
though, not sure.
Soundcard's a Live! value, not sure if this is a factor.
Andrew McP
I don't really have sound -- the shifter sounds work fine, but the
engine sound is distant at best, mainly only giving me any noise at the
redline (often it's just a "clicking" sound, like it's looping).
I'm using the on-board sound on my MSI K7T Pro2 Socket A motherboard,
and it works fine with EVERYTHING I've thrown on it, save for the N4
tech demo. Hopefully they'll address this issue.

To me the sound doesn't appear bassy enough, but the sound engine
to me seems excellent, especially when you lift off the accelerator.
Not having sat in a stockcar, unsure if this is realistic or not.
I guess I'm used to my 351 Cleveland and the roar that thing used to
give out when you planted it. ;)
Running it on a live card.
Cheers,
Rod.
That's what I am experiencing also...which is what led to my interpretation
of the engine sound in the previous post. All other ambient sounds are
perfectly fine.
Someone here suggested that it is only affecting those who are using the
SB16 card and that is exactly what I am using.
This raises a question: if the SB16 is capable of reproducing the rest of
the sounds, just what is the make-up of the engine sound? There must be
something different about it to the extent that the SB16 can't use it.

It's not just SB16, Bruce. I've tried SBLive 5.1, Turtle Beach A3D, and
SBLive Value and all have the same results. For me it's not just the
engine sound but all sounds. They crack and pop and generally sound
terrible. Enough that I have put away my wheel in frustration. I had
been looking forward to this demo for a long time...

The wind and road noises seem okay but the engine bears no resemblance to
even that depicted in N1, let alone N3 or NH.

Add me to the list - I've got an SBLive and the sound implementation is
definitely bugged. Hopefully the release will be sorted - or ideally
another demo will be released so we can see what the AI racing is like.

I've got four machines...
On the 333MHz, VooDoo 2, AWE64, Windows ME, the frame rate is around 25 and the
sound is fine.
On the 350MHz, TNT2, AWE32, Windows ME, the frame rate is decent and the sound
is fine.
On the 933MHz, VooDoo 5, SB Live, Windows ME, the frame rate is great and the
sound is terrible. The motor isn't bad but the spotter is terrible. Sounds
like he's using a tin can and string for his end of the radio. He might be
sitting in a barrel too!
On the 133MHz, VooDoo 1, SB 16, Windows 95, I didn't even try!
I'm hoping Eric will reply with an "Oh yea... were working on the SB Live
problem as well".

Eric,
I don't believe I'm using anything other than the defaults... the machine is
too new for me to figure out how to (knowingly) change that stuff yet!
Let me know if you would prefer to take this off-line into email. I'd like to
try
and isolate this problem so that it doesn't effect the released product.
