How long of a wait for the "2 or 3 percent" of us that can't get N4 to run?
How many are there, really? I am pissed! I have this game that I spent my
$50.00 on just sitting here doing nothing! I have NEVER had this problem
with any other game. Does anyone from papy read this NG? I have e-mailed
tech support three days ago and I haven't heard a peep from them. If you
can't get N4 to run, please say so here. I would like to know that at least
I am not alone. Thanks for letting me rant.

Waiting for a fix for NASCAR 4 copy protection failures
Alastair Ingram and others who could not run NASCAR 4 because of SecuROM copy protection asked how long they would have to wait for a fix. Defenders such as Mike Grandy said only a small percentage were affected and suggested a refund or a cheap new CD drive, while Alan Bernardo, Uncle Fester and Joe McGinn argued that copy protection only punishes legitimate buyers. Some admitted resorting to no-CD cracks.
Automated summary.
P3 450, V5 5500 1208 RAM. It ran fine for me after I downloaded new
drivers for V5. Now it won't run at all in D3D and is to slow to run in
open GL. It's always this way with really new games. You just have to keep
trying different things, bugging tech support, upgrade as you can afford to
and eventually it will work. Its always that way for me so don't give up
just keep trying different things

If it won't run in D3D on a V5 then you must have something wrong
somewhere. Runs fine on a V5 in D3D using vs-w9x-1.04.01-beta.exe
drivers. His won't run due to the copy protection and his specific
cdrom drive.

You're not alone. I have only been able to get the game to run with the
no-cd exe, but I can't race online. I've loaded all the latest drivers. I
think this is related to my cd-rom. It's an old (slow) one. What kind of
cd-rom do you have? My symptom; click on "run" on N4 opening screen, see
hourglass for 30 seconds while cd spins, then nothing. No cd activity,
ALT-CONTROL-DEL indicates game is not running. I received an email from
Sierra saying to try all latest drivers and to try to (temporarily) disable
my SBL Live joy port, but those things didn't help me.
Steve
I'm not sure it's a Papyrus problem since it is associated with your
hardware not being able to deal with copy protection that Papyrus uses. They
are aware of the problem and if there is anything they can do I'm sure they
will. There is always a money back guarantee offered by Sierra.

>Sierra is full of crap this time. Drivers will do nothing for the problem
some of us are having. I do believe Sierra knew full well that the copy
protection scheme they were going to use was going to shut out 10% of the
people from playing the game.
So right now I have two options. Use the WAREZ (nice word, ain't it,
Sierra?) fix/no-cd and forget about the WON servers, or else go through that
convoluted process of disabling port-tabbing out-enabling port-going back
in-reconfiguring wheel crap.
I've chosen to go the WAREZ way, for the most part, only occasionally going
the other route to get onto the servers.
There is always Kali and just plain TCP/IP with friends. And then there's
the hope that IRF gets updated to include N4.
There might be quite a few people who just decide to return N4 and then get
the WAREZ version, something which Sierra wanted to prevent but with this CD
thing has only encouraged.
Such is life.

I doubt that they will replace the CDs, just guessing but what I think they
would do is in the patch change it so that it does not look for the CD in
the drive and then just rely on the cd-key for online protection.
That is honestly just a guess

I've seen some suggestions elsewhere that you need to contact the
manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive to find out when(if) they plan to
implement support for SecureRom copy protection.

I agree. It is not a driver problem, its definitely their cd (or the cd

Another thing people can use is Kali. I don't think they added Nascar 4
support yet, but they do have Nascar3 support. I've seen quite a few people
playing on Kali. No stupid key or exe check required.

This IS papyrus/sierras fault. Other games do not have this problem. You

you guys could always just use a different CD-ROM drive. they're really
quite cheap. you can probably get one out of an old computer for free, and
just use it for N4. sure, it shouldn't be that way- but with the vagaries of
multiple vendors for the PC, that's life.
BTW, N4 works just fine on both my DVD drive and my CD-RW drive....

You fail to see the utter simplicity of this. I buy a game that I know I
will enjoy. It doesn't work for me because of a copy protection scheme the
makers made a conscious decision to use. So I go to WAREZ and get what I
paid for in the first place.
I call that the company bringing back on themselves what they are trying to
prevent. Sure, you're a Papyrus supporter and they allowed you to be a
tester. It's not surprising that you take the stance you're taking. But I
and many others are getting screwed here: how can you fault us for doing
what we have to do?
Your logic is flawed. We are not bringing anything upon ourselves. It's
obvious that it's Papyrus that's doing that.
Alanb
Steve, can I suggest that when you do try a new cd rom that you disable the
other drive temporarily if you do leave it in the system. I would be
interested in hearing how it worked out.

There are several different options rather than supporting an illeagal
existence by a warez site. Do you buy a piece of hardware and when it soen't
work for you tell the company that made it to make it work, or do you return
it. I really suggest that if you enjoy Nascar sims then install a cheap cd
rom and install it. Disable the drive thats giving you problems before you
install the software and you should not have a problem. Why do you insist
that it wouldn't bother me, of course it would. I'd bet you one thing
though, instead of coming on here and whining about it I would have already
figured out a way to get it to work. Another thing, we don't need to come on
here and get blasted for trying to help. We were fortunate enough to be able
to test and have some knowledge about problems to be able o help out when we
can. We aren't required to, we do it because we like helping others who
enjoy doing what we do. You can either take my suggestions or leave them,
thats up you.

I would recommend either sitting tight and keep checking back, or sending it
back for your money back until when/if they get a fix for it. I am sure Papy

It's very easy toWell I tell you what guys, you might as well get used to it as more and more
companies are going to newer types of security for their games, thanks to
all the crooks out there. It's sad that they have to do this, but I don't
blame them one bit. I would absolutely love to see them come out with a
security program that simply could not be hacked.
I tell ya, I love Papy sims, and while I did not have a problem with my
cd-rom or my cd-rw, if I had I would not have hesitated to run out and buy a
cheap cd-rom drive so I could play the thing. I can see where many would not
want to do this, however your going to run into this problem again as newer
games come out I suspect.

Mike,
There's no way to fix it. I have a CD-RW that is three months old and it
doesn't work when I use that drive either.
My argument stands. Papyrus is not going to stop illegal copying. Folks
will figure a way to circumvent the system. Why not use a scheme that
doesn't have known problems, when no matter what scheme is used it will be
pirated? In doing what they've done, Papyrus has forced me to take other
routes. My CD drives are pretty new; and still the thing doesn't work. I'm
not about to go out and get another CD ROM. The one I have is fine, except
for it won't run N4.
I think Papyrus should fix this: it's only fair.
Case closed,
Alanb

Alanb
So you want Papyrus to fix your hardware problems? Maybe your CDROM
manufacturer will fix any bugs in N4 then? Get real. My money's on Papyrus
in this one...
If you don't have the hardware to run the game, trade it in for Solitaire or
something similar. No need to copy protect that...

Every software developer knows that it will not run on all systems.
Unfortunately with the way PCs are with 2000 different CD-Roms, 500
different motherboards, etc.. we will always have to live with that. To
this day I can not get Thief or Thief 2 to run on my system and I bought
both, but when they would not run.. I took them back. I was not happy
about it, but sometimes you just have to understand why and take it as bad
luck of the draw.
I seriously hope that Papy does come up with a fix, everyone should be able
to enjoy this great game :)

Let me get this straight. Because of all these stinking crooks out
there, it's perfectly okay & logical to you for Papy to use a protection
scheme that doesn't make the pirates so much as miss a beat but yet
penalizes the legitimate owners who paid for their software? Hello??
There seems to be a hole in this logic. Now if the pirates were
virtually stopped with this technology, I suppose one could argue that
those who were having trouble were just a necessary "price" for the
protection. But such is far from the case.
Works great on my system, BTW, but I still think it's BS. It doesn't
have to happen to me directly for me to get indignant over the treatment
legitimate paying consumers are getting.
--
Fester
Yes, I do think it is logical. While it may not stop them, I am quite
certain it makes it at the least more difficult on them, and who knows,
maybe someday it will become almost impossible for them to copy.
I do agree it's a shame it ends up penalizing some folks that have no
wrongful intentions. I hope a fix can be made for them.

Like Don said, take it back to the store or Sierra and get a refund. Sorry
you'll miss out on a great sim.

I missed the small writing on the box that said "Guaranteed to work on any
and all systems regardless or any hardware conflicts". Guess I should have
read it better. Like I said before, if you want it to run, it can run.

That wouldn't help my problem if I had no access to a second drive on
another machine. The install craps out at the second file every time...asks
me to put the CD in blue screen of death routine.
If Sierra doesn't fix this, I'll just burn a copy of the installation files
and use a No-Cd patch--and play N4 for free. I gladly paid for N4 and I
would gladly pay triple for GPL. But if Sierra won't fix this, I'll be
using it for free...you (and they) have my word on that. I have never had a
single with this high quality name brand DVD player, including lots of
other Sierra titles. They screwed something up this time and they should be
willing to fix it.

One more time: It is NOT thanks to "all the crooks out there". It is
thanks to pea-brained technologically ignorant suits at Sierra who
can't get it through their infinitely thick skills that copy
protection has always had exactly one function - inconveniencing
legitimate customers. Period.

OK, I have a HP 8520i 4x4x24 cdrw. Is this why N4 won't run?? I paid and
registered the software but it won't work...I dwnlwded the no cd patch
and it goes thru all the start up stuff with out the cd and hangs at the
configuration screen. I'm figuring the cd is probably ok but my video
card (ATI rage pro Turbo AGP 2x with I think 4 or 8mb of ram) might be
the problem.... Whacha think??
Personally I paid for the thing and just want to get it running. Don't
mind upgrading to a better video card but will be damn if I have to buy
another CD ROM player.
Thanks
Bill Driscoll
Video card is definately a problem. Might want to look at an MX version of
the Geforce family of cards. You should be able to get one for under $100.
What kind of sound carddo you have.

I'm going to Best Buy today at lunch time for a new (cheapo) 40X CD-ROM, no
DVD nor write capability. I'll probably just take the old one out and
install the new one. I'll report back on my results.

Joe, would the copy protection be there if piracy was not so huge?

What you say of course is true. However, I have a lot of games and only two
have this problem, and one was fixed, I think. But my argument again is
that if Papyrus knew they'd be able to avoid users having this CD problem by
not using a particular copy protection scheme, then they should have used
the least problematic method. To say Papyrus used the scheme to prevent
piracy doesn't work, since they've prevented nothing.
I went out and got a new wheel-- which I badly needed-- that uses a USB
port, so maybe I wont' have to worry about the CD problem. All I'll need to
do is disable the joystick port.

I bet that you did not use Adaptec Easy CD Creator or any standard 3rd party

Is this true any more? Anyone with a system able to run N4 will have
bought a system (even if just from the local superstore or whatever) which
*probably* included a modem. So if they don't have net access it won't be
for lack of hardware, and while negotiating usenet could be an issue,
using a search engine isn't, and even a novice can quickly get deep into
the scummy underbelly of the Net.
Besides, here in the UK -- for example -- I work in an unskilled sector
(retail) where PC ownership has taken off steadily in recent years. Even
if most of the people I know with PCs aren't what you'd call power users,
when faced with the prospect of getting something for nothing it's
remarkably how resourceful people become... everyone seems to know someone
who has a friend who can copy or "get hold of" software. It's just an
extension of the underground marketplace for cheap booze, cigarettes, and
videos (these days DVDs) that's depressingly widespread. Putting obstacles
in their way doesn't stop anything, just makes them wait a little longer
before someone finds the solution. Spending $xx now or waiting two weeks
until little Johnny down the road, or the bloke in the pub's found an
answer isn't a hard decision.
I long ago learned to back away from discussing this kind of issue,
because moral posturing doesn't go down too well among many people I work
with.
> I hate intrusive copy protection

I don't use a cracked exe. I play online and that won't work. I had no
problems with the install so the copy protection didn't effect me but if it
had I'd be making irate calls to papy's tech lines. I expect hardware
issue's and tweaking with any game but a game that won't run in a modern
drive would infuriate me.

That's a fair argument, I see where you're coming from. But I still

Probably not. But that doesn't show that copy-protection prevents any
piracy at all.
The only partially effective anti-piracy technique is legal action,
such as the massive lawsuit launched against several individuals
yesterday. That makes sense, it's a reasonable way to attack the
problem. It creates a real deterrent, and it only targets the pirates,
not customers.

That is BS.
Burners are becoming so common in households today.
My mother in law knows how to make a music cd and knows how to copy a cd...
do you think she has any clue what a no-cd crack is? She would probably
think it is some kind of drug.

Hmmm, I did the same and it works, even online. I've installed the
game from the Sierra disc, made a copy with Adaptec's CD Copier (from
Easy CD Creator 3.5, it came with my HP 7500 drive), and the copy
works to start the game and run the game online. Maybe I can't
install from it, but I don't need it for that. Amazing what you can
do if you just try it (thanks, Don). :)
