I'm building a new overclocked system, to run N4, and was just wondering
what most people are using, Win98se or Windows ME?

Windows 98SE versus Windows ME for running NASCAR Racing 4
A user building an overclocked system for NASCAR Racing 4 asked whether to run Windows 98SE or Windows ME. Opinions split: several had reverted to 98SE and one poster called ME the most unreliable OS ever, while others said ME ran their sims fine and some recommended Windows 2000. Advice was also given on how to reinstall 98 over a factory ME installation.
Automated summary.

I personally dumped WinME to return to Win98SE.

Did you upgrade to ME or have it to begin with?
I'm thinking of replacing ME with 98. Is it hard?

I had updated to WinME. When I bought a new 60GB hard drive, I just
installed Win98SE instead.<g> However, if you updated to ME there
should have been an option on install to back up your old Win98
install. If you did this, you should be able to go back to it. If not,
just back up any files you want saved & burn them to cd if possible.
Then just boot with a boot disk & select cd-rom support. Once you get
to the prompt, format your disk with the /s switch. Change to your cd
directory & type SETUP. It'll take over from there.

My computer came with ME. I don't like it because it's slow and
always shutting off. Can I just go to Circuit City, buy Win 98 and
install it over ME? Or do I have to uninstall it first?

You can "upgrade" Win98 to ME, but not the other way around. I'd
suggest wiping your disk first before installing. Back up any files you
want to save first if at all possible.
If you don't have a boot disk, go to the add/remove programs section in
Control Panel. There is 3 tabs along the top of this applet, click on
Startup Disk, then on Create Disk on that page. You may need your cd in
the drive to create the disk. Put the boot disk in your floppy drive &
reboot. On boot, it'll give you an option to use cd-rom support or not
to use it. Choose with cd-rom support. Format your drive with the /s
switch, cd to your cd drive with the Win98 cd in it, & type setup.
It'll take over from there.

Sorry. To answer your first question, yes. You can do it by buying
Win98 at the software store & installing it. But I would do it like I
mentioned previously.

I am running ME that was installed "clean". But you need the full version
of 98 to do the full install with the ME upgrade. ME runs great for all my
games, Nascar4, GPL, SCGT, GP3, Unreal Tournement, Falcon 4.0, etc. My
system is an Athlon 900, 256MB PC133, Asus K7V, Voodoo 5 with latest drivers

WindowsME is definitely a better operating system than Windows98. Although
not a big number of changes. Some people have had problems with it, and
others like me have had no problems and love it.

I've found that I can push my systems a little further in ME vs 98SE
when it comes to OC'ing, but Win2k lets me push even further
I run them all on various systems and are happy with either, but some
people do have some issues with ME on certain systems, so 98SE is a
safer bet......

IMHO, Windows ME is the most unreliable, stinking, smoking pile of Poo
that's ever been passed off as an operating system. Except for _maybe_ Mac
System 7.5.2.
It has more driver problems than Win2K ever did, and has too much junk
running in the background to provide a smooth gaming environment.
It has become the new King of BSOD.
If you'd like to know how I _really_ feel about WinME, let me know :)

This is incorrect...
I have the $49 (Step Up) edition of ME.
I also have the Windows 98 (original edition, I despise SE) UPGRADE CD, not
the full version.
I installed ME on a freshly formatted drive, and all I had to do was install
the Win98 upgrade CD in the drive when prompted for the validation.
No worries...
Now, you cannot do this with Windows 95 and the Step-Up CD. The Step-Up
only works with Win98 CD's. For Wind95, you have to buy the full WinME
'Upgrade' package for $99.
If you just crawled from under a rock, and have nothing, then the full
package is like $200.

As someone who maintains a whole lotta computers, I can assure you it is far
more troublesome than Windows 98 ever was...

Aha, good catch Uncle Goy. I always have boot disks on hand. Never
know when you're gonna need them. It's just a reflex action on my
part. ;-)

Well if your machine is cobbled together by monkeys on crack, there's no
question WinME isn't going to run well. It runs fast, fat-free and
error-free for me. Make sure you use Select aka Corporate edition.

Same here really, I still use a boot floppy when reinstalling a Comp, I
"need" a few utils that's not on the Win98 CD, but that's more a habit
