The death of keyboard racing ?

Is keyboard racing dead in modern sims?

Leo Greco lamented that modern sims like NASCAR Racing 4 are unplayable with a keyboard, making quick casual sessions harder. Respondents mostly said wheels or joysticks are essential, though GP3 and Codemasters' Insane were cited as having good keyboard support. A disabled GPL racer described driving fast laps using only hand controls, and others shared setup tips.

Is it just me, or has the notion of playing a racing game with the keyboard become a thing of the past these days? I just read an article today that confirmed something I guess I already knew: nascar 4 + keyboard = waste of time : ) This certainly speaks wonders for the realism of the game, but now it's just another game that I can only play when I setup up my steering wheel. Remember the good old days when you could quickly stop the work your supposed to be doing on your computer, and turn a few laps in your favorite racing game using just the keyboard? But now almost every racing game I own requires me to clear my desk, hook up my steering wheel, put the pedals in place, take some pills for the impending back pain, and then finally play. I mean this is fine when you're setting up for a few hours worth of racing, but it's not so good when your seeking a quick distraction : ) So is it just me, or does anyone else yearn for the good ol' days of keyboard racing? Desperately trying to start my thesis, Leo ___________________________________________________________________ "The sooner you fall behind the more time you'll have to catch up."

Come on, you are either exaggerating or you don't have a very good setup. My pedals are always under my desk, my wheel has a quick clamp (MS Sidewinder Precision) and it is Digital USB so no calibration needed. Takes me all of 10 seconds to move the keyboard aside and clamp the wheel to the desk. Then I'm good to go. If I want to play a flight sim I just unplug the wheel from the USB extension and plug the stick in, again no calibration needed and I'm ready to go. That takes all of 10 seconds too. I've never played a racing game with the keyboard, but I have tried it out of curiosity and it gives me no feeling of driving at all. If you want a quick diversion then play Mineseweeper.

You're right ... I was exaggerating a little bit : ) However, it definitely sounds like it takes me a little longer to setup my wheel than for you. To be honest, I've always found that needing to hook up my wheel was a bit of a deterrent, especially if I don't plan to play for long. I just loved how quick and easy it used to be when I could use the keyboard. But then again, maybe I'm just tired of procrastinating with tetris : )

Leo If I may, I am disabled and do not use any pedals. I've always used a steering wheel since GPL with no problems and I had a nice box made so I can just toss it on my bed to race. {Yes my bed!} I am not the best plus many online are still amazed' that I race with no pedals at all & only paddles on my wheel.. I also use manual shifting, clutching & steering all from my wheel. I did run TM's Nascar Sprint but now I use Quillemot's aka Thrusmaster's Ferrari FF wheel. Bottom line you do not have to clear anything to race with a wheel and btw many of the GPLer hotshoes are using paddled gas/brake! Maybe I started something...eh? <BG> Cheers Thom_j. P.S. Also I want *no* pitty from *anyone* when I race online! I am just another online racer ready to kick butt.. No less, No more!! :o) news:[email hidden]...

I'd say keyboard racing has been dead for years. The keyboard just doesn't give the control. I remember with the Indy 500 sim I switched from keyboard to joystick and the difference was dramatic. As for wheels, I race at the desk of my home office. My wheel is attached to a marble chess board (about 10 lbs) and I slide the keyboard drawer out, sit the wheel on the desk and the C-claps of the wheel rest on the edge of the keyboard. This demands somewhat of a light touch which has helped me in racing and my 3 year old Thrustmaster T2 is still in fine shape with periodic replacement of pots. A convenient solution for me. It literally takes me 10 seconds to setup for racing and when not racing my wheel sits beside my desk out of the way. JTRIV Leo Greco wrote:

NASCAR1 required you to go to analog control for gas/brake as well. I use two tiny joysticks (CH Mach I) now -- left hand for gas/brake on Y axis, right hand for steering on X axis. Two seconds to pull them from behind the PC to sit on my keyboard wristpad. It is not that clear. An average person usually has to do a lot of precise work with his hands, but not with his feet, so his hands are quicker and more precise. However, the person used to move the mouse with his feet while using hands to type on the keyboard or the person used to play bass guitar with his feet while playing solo with his hands may easily have pretty same level of control over his feet as over his hands :> Alex.
Try GP3. There is a great competition (offline but time limited) coming up at www.lfrs.com. Or www.sim-racing.net/hof3 for some hotlapping action. Gone are the > days of driving on rails, where keyboards really were almost an advantage > due to the rapidity it took to change direction. I think "developpers" is too general. GP3 has excellent keyboard support, Insane as well. The way they implement it is the software emulates a wheel, which starts turning when the corresponding key is pressed and starts turning back when the key is released. In Insane you can set the speed at which the wheel turns and goes back. When done in this way, good keyboard support is not contradictory to a complex physics engine. Ok, keyboarders won't be able to explore all the subtleties of the physics engine, but you'd be amazed to see the level of control a good keyboard player can reach. Bart Westra
So did you not try the demo online either? I can only speak from what I know from the demo's, but you haven't really played Insane until you've tried the online multiplayer : ) Online multiplayer was so much fun with the demo that it actually lasted on my harddrive longer than several full games I bought! The demo also used the Codemaster Multiplayer Network utility to connect players, and it worked quite well. But the reason I was asking about the online community is cuz I recall a lot of folks from NA complaining that there were very few people with low pings to play with when the game was first released in europe since the game was not readily available in NA. Anyways, if you do find the time I highly recommend you try the multiplayer component of the game : ) Leo Bart Westra wrote:

If you are like me and rarely get the chance to race. I really enjoy it when I can though. I found a hand held wheel that works fairly well in Nascar 3 and 4. It is called Ultra Racer and is simple to set up and use. It hooks up through the game port. I know this is not the ideal set up but I really can't justify the money for the expensive wheel. i tried the $70.00 Logitech wheel and found that it was no better than the $30.00 Ultr Racer. I will probably get flamed for this but I thought I would offer an alternative. Mack

Hey I flew FS in CGA for about two years using a darn keyboard ;-) I don't count anymore the stalls I had when playing it! But I did not stop, because the sim was made for me. If It wasn't, then I would had stopped playing. If those lazy people can't have an attention span or more then 30seconds, it's their problem. I missed the beginning of this thread, but if you're talking about driving with the keyboard as your controller, that's me!! If I can't make the arrow keys drive the car, with up as gas and down as brakes, forget it! I loathe game developers who insist that these aren't valid keys and won't let me configure them as such!!!!!! On Fri, 23 Feb 2001 23:50:19 +0000, Gerry Aitken <[email hidden]> wrote:

I agree 100%!! I won't usually even keep a game that won't let me configure and use the keyboard, especially if it won't allow me to use the arrow keys! On Sun, 25 Feb 2001 00:26:46 +0100, "Bart Westra" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Hey, even in the days of Revs I was using a joystick (on the BBC Micro) - beats a keyboard any day! ;-) Since then I've driven other games using a mouse (had to sellotape the mousemat in place!) - practically always managed to avoid using the keys. Of course I do now have a wheel (or three) - you just can't beat analogue controls!
I agree 100% with you on this. "hobbit" <nospam@here> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
