NASCAR Heat versus NASCAR Racing 4

A longtime Papyrus fan said he had switched back to NASCAR Heat because NASCAR Racing 4 was harder to drive, had poor frame rates and bad AI. Opinions split: some preferred Heat's graphics and fun, while others argued N4 offered superior realism and race-craft. Dale Earnhardt Jr's praise for N4 was debated, with posters noting he was a beta tester who played sims on his own time.

I have always been a Papy fan, GPL is still my favourite race sim and i own all the Nascar games. I tried Nascar 4 for some weeks now. Framerates are not great on my PIII 900, geforce mx, 128mb ram. The cockpit view is very hard to drive , the handling is very difficult, i think it is not realistic. After playing n4 for some weeks i went back to Nascar Heat and this game (with the patch) is much better ; it is much more fun to play, cars look better than in N4 and the sound is also much better. Framerates on my system are very high, only the crashes are not that great. In this game you can drive side by side with other cars without crashing. Try it, give Nascar Heat another change and you will see that it is a better game than papys N4. RD

Not sure which game is better, but I know the AI in N-4 is whacked a little. Also, I think that the reaction to a little bumbing or grinding is over stated. Going into a corner and getting a little nudge from someone puts you out of the race 9 times outta 10......so far back you've no hope of catching back at least. It's not much fun working your way up the pack only to receive a little nudge on your fender that causes you to spin out............ I hope the patch(if there's one, will fix the AI) Jerry Jonas <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:97u9o4$m8p$[email hidden]... > I tried Nascar Heat and feel Nascar 4 by Papyrus > is far superior in all aspects of true Nascar Racing > Simulation. I've just done the samething and switched back to Nascar Heat from Nascar 4. I'm still finding it hard to believe that will all the additional time Papyrus took with Nascar 4, that it's still so damn buggy, as my system locks up nearly half of the time. But my biggest complaint is the crappy AIs. They just don't have the faintest clue where you are. If you're unlucky enough to be on the inside line while any AI is following another car into a corner, they continually hit you in the right rear spinning you out. What's the point of a great physics engine, if you can't finish a race. For me, Nascar Heat was fun, while Nascar 4 has been nothing but fustration. Ive done the same thing Graphics, cars, are better in Heat Sound is better in N4 N4 does take more tweaking to get decent framerates but its there As for driving in traffic, you can set up a fast car in N4 that will let you pound that AI into submission Papy just didnt hand them over like Hasbro did Im a big graphics fan, and every time I run Heat I get sick at the idea of running 256x512 paint schemes in N4 and those GPL car shapes (no front end and all ass) But N4 is clearly going to outlast Heat so Im pretty much resigned to running N4 [email hidden] <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I have always been a Papy fan, GPL is still my favourite > race sim and i own all the Nascar games. Nascar Heat is really really Lacking in race-craft. The strategy of oval racing is almost not present. This is where N4 has a huge advantage. The black flags, the stopping work in the pits so you can beat the pace car out of the pits, stuff like that. Both have very serious physics engines...N4 is a little suspect between car to car contact and Heat is a little over-generous in what you can get away with. With the exception of the upcomming F1RC, Heat my have the fastest best looking graphics when you can run all the details of just about any sim. N4 has some AI problems, so does Heat. It may be a common problem due to the tremendous amount of physics calculations that each sim must do. and N4 blows all other sims away for multiplayer experience. I don't think you will see improvements in Heat's Racing features until the next installment. The upcomming patch should improve what they have now and hopefully clean up the AI and flag problems. dave henrie "Jerry Jonas" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:97u9o4$m8p$[email hidden]... > I tried Nascar Heat and feel Nascar 4 by Papyrus > is far superior in all aspects of true Nascar Racing > Simulation. Well, Little E said Nascar 4 was the closest thing to real Nascar racing (and he should know being both a Nascar driver and a racing sim nut). I think I will go with his position over any of those who have never done the real thing. :) RB On Sun, 04 Mar 2001 23:35:50 GMT, "PG" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Just curious, is it possible to alter the differential setting in Nascar Heat in the full version? Both the demos of N4 and NH that I have have no option to do this, but I hear the full version of N4 does have it. Why I am asking is because I found the driving experience to be very good in NH, but the differential setting is unforgiving (it seems to be practically locked). It's great for drivers who don't like to set up their cars, as the setting as it is leads to severe understeer in on the limit situations and as such guarantees spin stability, but if you try to compensate for the understeer by increasing the rear roll stiffness, you'll end up with a car that just snaps into a spin, because a large part of the force in the fricition circle has already been used to oppose the difference in velocity of the rear wheels in a turn. If the full version is like that, it sure must be frustrating. -Gregor "[email hidden]" wrote:

That's called "realism". If you're worried about not being able to "catch up", race at a few of the short tracks instead of always racing on the superspeedways.

My biggest problem with N4 is the crap ai, this is the worse ai papy as ever made, the wall riding, the lack of side by side racing, the unrealistic flips (ala heat), the huge system requirements, friend of mine has a 950 cpu with 256 megs of ram and a geforce 64 meg video card and he still can't run the full field at the short tracks or road courses. Finally they still haven't gotten the draft right or bumping drafting right at the big tracks. Other than that I love the game. Also it's no sim , it's not a arcader but it's not a simulator, Silicon Speedway is a simulator :) Robert "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <qjAo6.24242$[email hidden]>, > [email hidden] says... > > Not sure which game is better, but I know the AI in N-4 is whacked alittle. > > Also, I think that the reaction to a little bumbing or grinding is over > > stated. > > Going into a corner and getting a little nudge from someone puts you outof > > the race 9 times outta 10......so far back you've no hope of catchingback

Dale Jr. (and Kevin Harvick) were both beta testers. They were beta testers for the very special reason that they were real-life Nascar drivers and who better to make a statement like that? I think you're reading too much into what Dale Jr said - he said it's "the closest thing", not "the best", or "exactly". In article <6nKo6.25768$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...

Exactly.. Little E is a gamer, just like us. If you don't already know you can find his reviews at http://www.bhmotorsports.com/ where he is a member. The man takes his simming very seriously. My words were exactly "the closest thing" so I took his words correctly. He also stated that this is the Nascar sim we have been waiting for.. so uhhh.. what does THAT mean? :) RB On Mon, 05 Mar 2001 21:40:24 GMT, John Simmons <[email hidden]> wrote:
