I'm interested in tinkering with some sounds in N4. I tried to unpack
the sound.dat file with unpack.exe from 1996 however I was unsuccessful. I
remember someone mentioning Papy compressed these files differently from
before so I can only assume that's why I couldn't do this. So I'd assume
there's a new version of pack, unpack.exe's? Or should I be looking in to
using a switch to uncompress the sound files?
Editing NASCAR Racing 4 sound files
Michael Barlow asked how to replace NASCAR Racing 4 sounds. Others pointed to the DatX unpacker and explained required sample formats, while users criticised the stock engine sounds and shared a community sound pack. Tom Pabst noted he had produced engine sounds for Ratbag's DTR Sprint Car and upcoming Leadfoot.

You need "DatX". Get it at the US Pits (http://www.theuspits.com). Works
quite well, but only in the unpack-direction. I used it to crank the volume
of that nasty "Gentlemen, start your engines"-screamer about 90% down ;)).

Thanks, that did the trick.
I took the whole sound folder and copied it to my Zip Drive and
uncompressed it from there. I found the engine sound and figured I'd have a
bit of fun with it. So, I took my GPL Eagle.wav, Renamed it, and stuck it in
the N4 sound folder. Damn it, N4's initial start up screen flashes a split
second and I go right back to the desk top. N4 wont run at all. I can
delete that renamed file and have no problem with N4, but I can't run N4
with that file. I'll have to tinker with this a bit and see what I come up
with :-)

You have to make sure that the new sound has the same format
(sample-frequency, bit-resolution) and roughly the same length (very
important!) as the replaced one.

GPL sounds are : PCM,22.050 Hz; 8 bit; Mono
while N4 sounds are : PCM,5.512 Hz; 8 bit; Mono
That could be your problem. You got to convert the sound first
with something like GoldWave.
I replaced most of the spotter files without a problem with
the "nasty" spotter that once came out for N3. The N4 spotter sounds
are way to "clean" for my taste.
I can't imagine you get a "TV commentator" spotter voice inside a
WC car doing 180 mph in a pack of say 30 cars...

GPL sounds can be: 8 or 16 bit, SR almost anything (not 44100 Hz though),
Mono or Stereo
N4 is more picky. I have tried these:
Sounds in the \spcc folder: 8 bit (16 bit doesn't work), SR 5512 Hz or 22050
Hz, Mono
Other sounds: 16 bit, SR 22050, Mono
I don't know if this is system dependent - propably not.

Alas, not all sounds of N4 are in this format! Especially the engine-sounds
are in 22050 Hz, 16 Bit mono. Best method is to check every single sound
before altering it.
Spotter and announcer-sounds are as you mentioned though ;).

You're absolutely right!
I only edited the sounds in the spcc.dat, and those are 5.512 Hz...

On the main page, click on the "Stockcars"-link, then click on "EDITORS".
It's the second one in the list. Here's the direct link (yes, I know, you
guys at the pits don't like that ;)) ):

I've driven a Nascar stockar and been at the track when they're running
- the engine sound in this pack is nothing like what you really hear.
The sound of a stockcar at speed has more of a modulating howl to it as
it circles the track. These engine sounds really aren't any better than
what we already have (IMHO), except maybe the less obtrusive starting
announcer ("gentlemen start your engines"). Here's a link to a zip'd
wav file of a real stock car:
http://www.paddedwall.org/n4cars/NascarWAV.zip
That's a sound bit from a video my wife took as I made some laps at
Vegas...

By the way, I just downloaded the v1.5 sounds pak and it's a bit closer.
I think there's still a bit too much bass in it, but I'm not a sound
guy so I don't really know. :-)

I'd love to see someone take some scanner bits and turn them into N4 wavs for
the game. Get some real race-time bits like that one we heard a couple of
weeks ago, "We ain't got time for this s***." Maybe Todd Parrott could
volunteer a few of his choice sound bites. ;o)

I don't know if everyone else has the same sounds that I have but my engine
doesn't sound like it came out the Evernham engine shop. It sounds like it
came from Norelco.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! How come they can't stick a mic inside a
real racecar to come up with the .wav files for the game? That is the dumbest
thing I've ever come across. "Oh, we'll make the car pull to the left and
your tires will blow if you stand on the brakes but, the sounds for the cars
will be made with an electic razor in the shower."

Guys....
I have been doing engine sound creation and editing since the days of N2.
N4 engines and sound FX are no different.....old stuff and easy to work
with. I also produced engines for Heat...and was a subcontractor for Ratbag
producing the official game engine sounds for DTR Sprint Car...and the
upcoming Leadfoot (stadium racing tracks).
Keep you eye on High Gear.....my soundpaks for N4 will be coming out soon.
New N4 "announcer" soundpak due up in a day or two. New engine sounds and
in-car FX (grass, gearship, wind, etc.) due up in a week or so....with
"choices" for engine sounds to suit different tastes...and sound
systems/sound cards.
Keep your eyes on High Gear for this stuff.....
