Outrage over Game-Guru review mocking NASCAR and Earnhardt

Posters condemned a Game-Guru.net review of NASCAR Racing 4 that attacked NASCAR and made derogatory remarks about Dale Earnhardt rather than reviewing the game. Many emailed complaints, the review was pulled and the author issued an apology, and some argued the flood of angry emails was itself excessive. A side discussion explained why HTML posts are poor netiquette on Usenet.

What's the point of that review? It's not even a review, just an attack on the sport. So he doesn't like NASCAR? Fine, loads of people don't. But where's the review of the game? Guys-- I think it put online just to get a rise out of everyone. I think they succeeded.
Normally I keep quite around here. But when a person attempts to make a lame point by using a person that is deceased, regardless of what their status was, doesn't deserve our time. Just read the first paragraph, and don't waste your time with the rest of it. Let him know what you think of him. His cowardly assault of Dale Earnhardt's character and the character of those who respected him speaks for itself. I can only imagine what kind of person could take such obvious pleasure in the pain of others. The most amusing and yet somehow pathetic part of the whole thing was the 'writers' comments on the financial status of NASCAR fans. "97% of NASCAR's audience is way too poor to own a computer with enough horsepower to run this game" and then he brags about his own computer, "On my Celeron 566" ! I just about choked with laughter. I haven't had anything that slow in almost 3 years. Ok, so maybe I am ahead of the national curve in computer systems. Still, a so called 'reviewer' is running a cheap Celeron 566 and putting other peoples systems down? Clearly, the joke's on him and he dosen't even know it. > Racing fans, PLEASE, don't waste your time on this non-entity of > human waste. It's exactly what his lonely, empty life is crying out for. This is from a Game-Guru.net page called Nascar Racing 4 review appology: ------------------ Game-Guru.net readers, Two weeks ago I received NASCAR Racing 4 in the mail to review. Due to my lack of interest in the sport, I wrote a negative review. While I was rambling, I said some derogatory remarks that made fun of Dale Earndhardt and NASCAR in general. For this I am deeply sorry. I should not have put down a sport I obviously do not understand. I am sorry for making fun of fans of the sport, as the stereotypes mentioned in the review are obliviously completely off base. I was using these expressions for comedic effect in the review. While I know this is no excuse for my actions, I am sorry for upsetting many people, especially those who enjoy this sport. While I personally believe that I expressed my true opinion of the game, I understand that I may not have been the best person to review a NASCAR title. Because of this, I did not like it. You may, and that is your choice. If you want to talk with me, and discuss this issue further, please contact: [email hidden] I will be glad to talk with anyone about this issue. I strongly believe in free speech, but free speech does have the potential to be carried too far; my review is a perfect example of this. Please don't blame Game-Guru.net for the review, as I take full responsibility for what was posted. I hope you'll understand, and I will do my best to think before I type anything in the future. Sincerely, Tyler Werrin ------------------- Geoff Bonner wrote:

> Is it not a perfectly valid view for those looking for an arcade style > racer? No, a good reviewer should be able to differentiate between how well a game simulates the sport it is based on, and their own personal preferences. That is like me giving a bad review to a horror movie only because I prefer comedies. Ridiculous! Don Chapman [email hidden]

Seems OK to me. I like the game much more than the reviewer does, but what the hell. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will not let a negative review ruin my enjoyment of the game. ...and how many of these e-mails have you read to judge them all nasty? This is what I sent, and apart from the sarcastic second to last sentence, it's all logical arguments. Even the second to last sentence was well deserved after reading such a review. That the guy felt the need to apologise says everything, although he redeemed himself somewhat by doing so. e-mail details- "Honestly, what's the point in someone who doesn't like Nascar or any kind of racing sim reviewing a game like Nascar 4. Of course you're not going to like it, you don't like Nascar. Clearly, the Sierra Nascar series sells very well, so some people *do* like Nascar, and buy Nascar games, expecting them to be as close as possible to what you'd experience driving in the Nascar series. If this is what Nascar 4 set out to achieve then it got extremely close. If the tracks weren't oval, then it wouldn't be an accurate simulation. Also, the tracks, although almost all oval, do all vary. None of them are perfect ovals. Plus you have the choice to race any distance you choose, so you don't have to do 500 laps. Based on the opinions so eloquently expressed in your review, I'm not surprised the menus proved too complicated for you. What a pointless review." The thing that gets me is this: A review is something that's thought about, researched, then written. This is much different from an e-mail fired off the cuff in an emotional burst. I think he wrote what he really feels - no one would be stupid enough to spew that just for shock effect... Dave, While I certainly agree with you in principle, I think the 'reviewers' true character was shown in his original writings, not his apology. Those opinions and statements were written of his own free will and under no duress. He said what was in his mind and in doing so revealed it as it is. On the otherhand, his apology came only after Game-Guru.net pulled the review and no doubt pressured him to make amends to prevent further tarnishing of their name, not his. While his apology may well be sincere, the circumstances it was issued under must cast some doubt on that. However, I applaud Game-Guru.net for their swift and very appropriate action in this matter. Eldred, You are absolutely correct and I fully understand that not everyone can afford a killer rig. I do not belittle anyone for having a less than top line machine. Not at all! I readily apologize if my remarks were taken in that context by anyone. That is in no way the spirit in which they were intended. My point was that this is a supposedly professional reviewer making his remarks in a public forum who is deliberatly insulting and falsely stereotyping a certain group of people and attempting to do so by pointing out his own supposed superiority in system power. It is a false superiority which is hardly applicable in this case. It was his use of his own system to judge others by that was unacceptable and laughable, not what kind of system yhose other people do or do not have. Again, my remarks were directed only at him for his use of such tactics, not at others for the power of their systems. Rick W. PS. At least I am very sure we both agree this guy is definitely not cool. :] EldredP wrote:

Zonky, Please consider this a friendly and inquisitive post. I was not annoyed or offened by your rebuke. However, I am curious as to what the problem is. I use html in all my regular mail as do almost all my friends and business associates. I send and receive dozens of times a day and have never had anyone comment on it before. It is just natural in the circles I work in. Therefore, I am curious as to the nature of your problem with it. Is there some reason I should not be using it on the Usenet? I haven't bothered to read the review yet (it sounds like the jerk doesn't deserve my visit to add to his site stats), but to be fair, from a driving model perspective, both Deth Karz and Powerslide were pretty darn good arcade titles (FAR better than the likes of Test Drive 6, for example). Still, just based on the comments here, it sounds like the guy's not only a Kindergarten drop-out, but also a slack-jawed mouth-breather. Based on what I've heard here, we'd all be better off if we DIDN'T grace the game-guru site with our presence. -- JB On Wed, 14 Mar 2001 04:38:04 GMT, "Roy Berube" <[email hidden]> wrote:

No. For that to be the case he would have needed to say something like: 'This game is for the person who wants to simulate nascar racing, it is NOT for those of us who enjoy a quick belt arond a fictional track in a car that doesn't bear much resemblance to it's real life counterpart - if there is a real life counterpart". Instead he came out and bashed NASCAR, its fans, its drivers, the game and the company which produced the game, simply because he doesn't like NASCAR. I have to say, if they give NASCAR haters NASCAR games to review - I would not trust that site for purchasing advice, ever. He likes arcade racers, "real driving games" he calls them... okayyyyy... so he should be given arcade games to review. Get a simmer to review the sims, someone who understands why driving with the keyboard is not something you'd expect. It's all about objectivity. And BTW, the guys reviewing style indicates he's crap at that anyway. Criticism is more than just saying "This sux, d00d, go play Quake". DG

Well Mike, I can't speak for the Windows side of things but I can offer some insight as to why those with alternative OS'es choose other types of newsreaders. Zonky has cleansed his OS from his header, but I see he's using Xnews so I assume he's using a non-Windows OS as well. Those running Linux & FreeBSD can vouch for the bugginess that is Netscape. IE not only is unavailable in those circles, one would almost be considered a heretic to run it if they could. Most decent newsreaders like Pan & tin don't support the use of HTML. The reason they don't is that usenet evolved originally under UNIX which composed the standards of text-only & being UNIX newsreaders it complies with these standards. Why add support for something thats not supposed to be there? That's my story & I'm sticking to it. ;-p -- Fester

Take a look at the example difference between html and plain text http://www.houghi.org/ The same message takes up about 25 times the space in html. If everyone suddenly switched to html, usenet diskspace requriements is going to go through the roof. Article hold times are going to plummet, or the costs to users will spiral. In the context of a general gaming site, i'd agree. However, niche's exist, and he's well inside a FPS/Arcade thrills site. I still think it's a fair review of NASCAR 4, and (rightly or wrongly) his opinion of the Nascar fanbase is fairly right on for his niche as well. Doesn't make it right- and doesn't mnake it wrong either. It's just one persons opinion. Z. -- Please remove my_pants when replying by email.
>....and how many of these e-mails have you read to judge them all nasty? I judge some of them to be just that, first, because one poster in here said, and I quote, "Offensive e-mail to reviewer dispatched >:(". I'll leave to you the job of identifying the poster of the above quoted line. Secondly, having been a reader and a poster in the Usenet newsgroups for some 10+ years, I think I know what kind of behavior is going to surface when any kind of post of this nature finds its way on to the web. I'm sure there were plenty of emails fired off to the reviewer, exhibiting 3rd-grade level grammar and the odd four letter word thrown in for effect. The day Dale was taken from us, I began writing a column that was posted to the internet the next day, and in it one thing I pointed out was that there were going to be a lot of pseudo-NA$CAR fans coming out the woodwork and screaming that Dale was dead because of Sterling Marlin. I do not confess to being a complete expert on the nature of humankind but, there are a few things I think I can safely predict and usually time bears out my forecasts. Response to that review of N4 is just such an event. Dave Casey Casey#9 (NASCAR Racing 4) www.teamcasey.net www.lvkc.com www.buycoolcrap.com
You're quite right, I did say my e-mail was offensive, when in reality it was quite tame, so that's clearly my fault. Plus your comments were aimed at the majority and not just at me. Sorry about that. All I will say, is that any e-mails the reviewer recieved that were genuinely offensive or containing foul language were deserved because his review was also offensive and contained foul language. I'm not sure we should care for his good opinion of us. Was this the Game-Guru-review? I have sent an angry email, and got the following reply; My mail first; """""Your review of N4 has truly been one of the most single-minded, dumb pieces of writing ever published on the net. N4 does a superb job in modelling a Stock-car, and sim-racing enthusiasts love it. That the game is just too difficult for you, and that you don't own a wheel (I do own a wheel, not an expensive Microsoft-wheel, but a 4yo Thrustmaster) doesn't justify you to write a review which has no other purpose of ditching a fine sim. Hmm, and then i still keep my mouth shut about that Nazi-like remark about the wealth of Nascar-fans. Silly and Pathetic. Svend van der Vlugt, ICQ# 40125647 """""""""""" This was their reply from the editor; """""Yes, I read the review, and I completly agree with you that it wasn't "competent", to say the least. Tyler is a friend of a friend, and has nothing better to do, so we gave it to him to review, not considering the consequences. We agree it was totally unprofessional for us to post it, but we felt that Tyler was entitled to his own opinion. If you don't wan't to see any more of him on Game-Guru, please direct caustic flames to his email. I have the feeling that if he gets enough hate mail, his writing will either improve or his self esteem will drop so far he'll "take a break" from writing. Either way, the world will be a better place :) We will put up a formal apology soon, and hope to get a second opinion up as well.
