The new cockpit view replaces the roofcam, so you cant look left or right
anymore. Also, if you want the gauges and speed/gear indicator, you have to
turn them on ("G" and "S" respectively).

New N4 car camera views and forced-cockpit rules
A poster shared custom car camera views for NASCAR Racing 4, made by sdobie, which replace the roof cam with a lower cockpit-style view and gave some a frame-rate boost. Discussion turned to whether such views should be allowed in 'in-car view only' online races, with Dave Henrie arguing that a sim should be driven from the real cockpit and others saying an expanded view makes up for the lack of peripheral vision.

Reason being, it is not replacing that View.. it is replacing some of the
others.
Now, if he released a version that did Replace that view that would work I
think. Now if he did not want to do that because he thought some people
would still want to use the Original view sometimes.. then he should change
the default view to his new view.. and move the Default view to one of the
others
Or make a small utility to do that upon command.
That would be pretty cool

The cockpit view is not a traditional view, it has other important
information, has a much better resolution (there is a whole virtual 3d
cockpit), gauges, a 3d wheel, etc... Just watch a replay and look inside
the car.
Note, the same thing happens in GPL but at a lesser extent.

And yeah, after I read your post, I noticed front and rear jpegs were
swapped.
I can't stop playing with them.....if there was a way to modify the normal
cockpit view, it would be cool too....just to give some extra choice to
people.

my 19" monitor and GeForce 2 - I'm not going to look at the road through a
view the size of a postage stamp. The graphics in N4 are too gorgeous for
that. I think bumper-cam and roof-cam should be allowed as well, or a hood
cam, or a cockpit-minus-roof cam. Or something. Anything!.

on a track? Because thats what a sim does. Why race in the cockpit?
Because thats where real drivers race and a SIM should be representing that.
If Nascar puts a rocking chair on the back decklid then I suppose an outside
view could be appropriate. But as far as I can tell, the driver sits IN the
car, not floating behind or over it.

than the real thing, BY FAR! Limited vision? not a lot of peripheral
vision, but you don't have alot with a helmet on anyways. (but you
can turn your head somewhat, although I think that's getting next to
impossible in Winston Cup these days...) the real limitation of the
sim is the lack of "feel" but hey, I LIKE the lack of feel when I hit
the wall!
If you want to race it ala arcade style, just avoid races where incar
is forced.

I just love the new cockpit view!! It gives me a better view & more
depth of field without all the trash that 'N4' put in their cockpit view.
Btw: I have a friend who races the "real life real deal" and I've been
lucky enuff to take it for a spin.. If my memory serves me correctly,
It does not look all that closed in when I was strapped into the car!
Yes it has all the stuff in there but my point of view {via my eyes!}
saw a nice wide/big windshield with a huge look outside! So I feel
the N4's version of cockpit view is not accurate..imho

...which is exactly why having an 'expanded' cockpit view should be
perfectly OK. The semi-unrealistic view makes up for the lack of peripheral
vision you would have in the real car.
