Hi all,
I have a homemade wheel/pedal setup with a 12" Grant wheel.
More than once I have thought about going to a 14 or 15" wheel.
Any comments that might help me make my decision?
I mostly play N4 but drive a bit of GPL also.
Jeff
Does a larger steering wheel improve sim control?
A builder of a homemade wheel asked about moving from a 12-inch to a 14 or 15-inch rim for N4 and GPL. Most said a bigger wheel gives more precise control, though one poster argued smaller wheels with more potentiometer resolution are better. Raymond of ACT Labs polled the group on preferred wheel sizes, and the original poster later reported the 14-inch upgrade was a clear improvement.
With Raymond (ACT Labs)
Automated summary.
I would say do it. I can't directly come out and say it based on sim play,
but I put a smaller grant wheel on my truck and I was shocked at how this
changed the feel. I dropped only an 1" in diameter and the truck became much
more "darty". I have only a 9 or 10 wheel on my sim controller and I would
love to go up in size. It kinda makes me wonder if this is part of the
reason everyone likes the TSW wheel so much. I think they come with a larger
wheel plus you can get a 15" as an upgrade.
MadDAWG
Bigger diameter wheel = more precise control.

Why not put a "quick connect" device on your steering column (you can
purchase this at any racing equipment store).....so you can change from a
small wheel for GPL or open wheel sims.....to a large (14" or 15") for N4?
Or......wait a couple more months and buy a BRD racing controller...they
will come with variable sized wheels....from a 10" F1 style wheel....all the
way up to a 14" NASCAR-style wheel.....with "quick connects" installed
already! You'll also be able to order "modular" peddles (2 or 3 peddles)
that can be bottom-hinged for F1 style open wheel racing and some sports car
racing sims....or overhead-hinged for stock car sims. Its really a
"complete package"...and everything is swappable and interchangeable (even
backward compatible.....lol...).
Tom
To add to Tom and Rick, yes a bigger wheel has been an asset to me since
switching (was LWFF now is TSW2 Cup). I race primarily NASCAR 4 and dabble
with Heat since some add on stuff has popped up, and I "play" with MTM2,
NFS, and a couple others. I LOVE the big wheel, its not why I changed
wheels, but since I was getting the TSW and my choices where 13" or 15"
(either one you choose comes with Cup model at no extra $$) I got the 13"
and haven't looked back. I probably couldn't use a 15" due to the
configuration of my desk and my 6'4" frame/legs getting in the way. The 13"
nearly rides along my thighs now, lol.
Anyway, the TSW also has the quick disconnects (not from a racing store as
Tom mentioned, more like a PC power-type plug) so you can mix and match
wheels as you please, so that ideology is good advice provded you can match
up the wiring to a quick connect that you can just go out and buy.
I think that TSW and the other custom wheel folks out there are setting the
trend by allowing folks to spec out their wheels and building them in a
modular style so you can upgrade or customize as you want or need to.
Good luck,
Sim

Just had a quick look at their site, can't find anything new
there...well apart from those stupid replicas that only their corporate
customers can afford.
They also claim to be at the 'cutting edge' but, from what they show on
their site, it all looks two or five years old to me.
Do you have any insider info on there new stuff?
Do you know if they are still 'thick as thieves' with Bernie Ecclestone?
The last time I spoke to BRD they said they were planing, along with FIA
and Bernie, to implement some crappy live ghost mode, with telemetry
from the real F1 cars being hooked up to some future 'pay & play' F1
online 'simulator'.
Of course they told me it was a secret and not to tell anyone. They also
said that as a was one of their first customers I could test some of
their new products, as a kind of 'official' test driver. I accepted
eagerly and never heard from them again :(
Still, i'm not bitter.

I think an 18" to 20" wheel would be much better for NASCAR. Then you
could have a nap when you are drafting around daytona.

Just to get your opinion,
Can I take a small litttle survey of what size wheel they think would

It would be soooo nice to have a wheel that was "centered" down the
straights in N4.
Seriously, I reckon around 30cm or 12" diam. is about as big as you want to
go.. atleast I dont think I'd like a bigger wheel than that.

It would be great to have an option on the AL wheel to install whatever
wheel the user decided, but I don't know how that would affect the FF on the
Force wheels...

Anything bigger then 15" is really the best imho if you use it extensively
in stock car titles. It still depends on the quality of the potentiometer.
I would really love a company that sells different steering wheels. Kinda
like the RS shifter gate idea, switching back between a D-shaped open-wheel
steering and a large Nascar wheel.

As sensitive as the steering is in N4, even at 32:1, I have thought of doing
the same.
To the point of nylon-strapping a bigger wheel to my current one :)
If it weren't for the shift-paddle, I would have done it already.

GPL runs great, I thought I might lose some here but actually gained. N4
handles better than ever also.

I've got a feeling that everyone who looking
for 14" will would be disappointed if they actually had one. It throws off
your steering precision. Your hand travels further for the same amount of
input, so you need quicker reflexes. You'd also need more points of
resolution for an equal amount of precision as a smaller wheel provides.
I've done some experimenting with this, and although it looks good, a larger
wheel generally translates into longer lap times. There's a reason modern
race cars don't use the same size wheels as their old, vintage predecessors.

Even MBTR uses small steering wheels. You'd think a 22" wheel would be

Actually the larger the wheel the more precise the steering.
I have gone from a 10" retail to a home made 12" which I upgraded to a 14"
On a track like Daytona or even Watkins Glen I have more control. Can't
knock a bigger wheel until you have the opportunity to try one.

Narrowing the sweep to 120 or so may not feel natural.

That just doesn't make any sense. In computer racing you're spreading out
the points of resolution so much that your hands need to cover a greater
distance just to reach the next point. Nothing is read between the points.
In the real world, I'm sure a lot of F1 drivers would like to hear your
theory. They've been headed in the wrong direction all these years.
In Nascar, the cars are heavier and maybe a larger wheel is needed for
leverage. Or, maybe there's a Nascar rule for steering wheel size that I
haven't heard of yet. I'm not sure.
>Can't knock a bigger wheel until you have the opportunity to try one.
I've experimented with several sizes on a few different retail wheels. I
routed a disc out of 3/8" plywood and used a 1 1/2" flexible, plastic pipe
(well pipe from our construction sites) cut the full length so it would fit
over the plywood disc as the rim. Without getting into a lot of unnecessary
detail, after each driving experiment (several games on several tracks with
several settings) I re-routed the disc to a 1" smaller diameter until I was
finally down to 11". In each case, the smaller wheel performed better. I
also got better, more consistent lap times when I put the smaller LWFF wheel
on the Act Labs Force RS, and there isn't much difference in the diameter.

My wheel (home made) has 270 egress of rotation, no room to overdrive the
poentiometer.
You have to look at it this way... with your hand on the outside of the
wheel your hand moves further on a bigger wheel. Because your hand will move
further on a bigger wheel and the pot moves the same for any size wheel on
the same setup the steering is more precise. The 'dead' points in between
are what helps limit tire squeal and leads to faster laps.
Some people like smaller wheels and tight steering locks, I find I can
manage my tires better with a bigger wheel and higher lock.
I recognize the url in your sig, I guess I owe you alot of thanks for the
Act-Labs pedal tweak. I went for the 2nd stage... very noticeable
difference. On the wheel itself I had a mild steel sleeve made and a brass
bushing to fit inside. The 'pot holder' fits snuggly inside the brass
bushing which really stiffened up the wheel (RS not FF).
Respectful of your preference.. but still prefer a larger wheel, Jeff
