Newcomer asks for the best online racing sim

A player tired of shooters asked for the best online racing sim. Suggestions split between GPL on VROC, NASCAR Racing 4 on Sierra's service, STCC2, and NFS Porsche Unleashed for an easier start. He chose GPL and was pointed to VROC, and the thread ended in movie-quote trivia.

Onroad or offroad? Race cars or sports cars? Arcade handling or realistic handling? (or somewhere in between?) For newbie, I'd say NFS: Porsche Unleashed for onroad. --KC

"Jim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:L2Ed7.4305$[email hidden]... : Ok guy's i have just about had it with the kill em all games, If you are willing to invest some time then I refer you to Stefan's posting :-) GPL is an *incredibly* frustrating sim to learn but it rewards your efforts. You will spend the first week or so discovering new and exciting ways to launch yourself into the scenery (and that's when you're not trying to...). Start slow, touring speed almost and gradually learn what the limits of the cars are. Jump in like your playing a "Need For Speed"-type sim and you'll come to hate GPL very quickly. The graphics are almost primitive now but the physics model will keep you coming back for more. After driving GPL you'll really come to appreciate racing with massive amounts of power but without downforce. P.S. If you don't care for oval racing then I think Swedish Touring Car Championship 2 is a great little sim that doesn't get talked about much here because it was never released state side. You can order it from www.softwarefirst.com in the UK though.

I second the nomination for NFS: Porsche Unleashed -- probably the best recommendation for a newbie I've seen in this thread. I can't believe you guys would point an admitted newbie towards GPL . . . whatta way to lose a potential sim racer! GPL is unarguably the best, but it's also the most difficult. If I'd started with GPL, I'd probably be working on mods for Half Life now . . . :-/ NASCAR Heat is also a good starting point -- even if you don't like NASCAR, the "Beat the Heat" scenarios are a TON of fun. There are plenty of new non-NASCAR mods coming out (and lots of new tracks), so this one has a LOT of life left in it, even for the non-NASCAR bunch. -- JB

GPL, its the best sim so far ... nascar 4 is also very good ... but unfortunately you have to drive nascars..and ovals. Besides Watkins Glen and Sears Point, until GPL->N4 converter comes out :) "Dan Leach" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9l9crh$egq$[email hidden]... > GPL, its the best sim so far ... nascar 4 is also very good ... but > unfortunately you have to drive nascars..and ovals. > > Jim <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:L2Ed7.4305$[email hidden]... > > Ok guy's i have just about had it with the kill em all games, seems tobe

That's why I suggested STCC2. It's not the sim level of N4 or GPL, but it's pretty good and is more sim than SCGT. Some say Need For Speed:Porsche Unleashed. Well, I bought that games and it plays like an arcade racing game on a console system so I wouldn't recommend it. It's certainly no sim, but it's fun for a few hours.
NFS:PU??? I think everyone might be under-estimating the newbies that post here........Obviously there are some that don't have the patience [or the time] that is required to become proficient at "Grand Prix Legends"....Buy, there are just as many that will relish the challenge and realize what a truly special piece of software GPL is!!! I've been playing golf for 18 yrs. now[ 4 handicap ].......I am hopelesly addicted......It is unbelivably hard and can never be mastered. It requires LOTS of patience, practice and determination. If a person puts in the time, the rewards are boundless!!! I have finally found something equally as rewarding [and addicting] as Golf in GPL! I discovered GPL about 2 yrs ago and have put in countless hours and laps [I'm still not good yet} and love it to death! It's a way of life for me now just as golf has been. If a newbie posted a desire to play golf on a Golf newsgroup...do you suppose the veterans would tell that newbie to go try Putt-Putt because REAL golf is so hard??? I think NOT!!! Let the newbies know there is no substitute for GPL!! [yet]....The more of "US" there is the more chances of getting an even more advanced Sim in the future. As far as dated graphics are concerned, I haven't seen too many sims that are better once the add-ons are applied!!! But we all know it's not the graphics that keep us Hotlapping and watching replays[aliens] till the wee hours trying to knock off a tenth or so....................Kajun_II

Weren't we all GPL newbies once? I don't think experience of other sims helped particularly with getting to grips with GPL.

Ok guy's i like the sound of GPL, and certainly no disrespect to all who said some other sim/game,i will give it a go and judging by all the responce to my post, i will find all the help and advice here, nobody has answered the second part of my question, hows about the online aspect of the sim. You haven't lived until you've raced GPL online, no joke. If your first successfull online race doesn't leave you with a great sense of fullfillment on the one hand and wondering if "this kind of heart rate" is actually healthy on the other, I'll nuke my GPL CD in a microwave. It's the benchmark other games' online capabilities are measured against. On top of that, as far as I know, the online community is newbie friendly.
