Is it just me, or is the in-car view have a smaller & smaller window with
each version of Papy's Nascar series? I don't see why I need to see under
the dashboard! I'd prefer an in-car view where the window takes up more
than a measley 1/4 of the screen. To me it looks like I'm seated in the
back-seat with a 6 foot steering column. I've only seen the demo so far...
are there any other in-car views that I'm missing? or an option to move fwd
& backward in the cockpit (like in SODA)? I'm wanting to like N4, but the
view and the "turn-right-to-go-straight-realism" are turning me off.
N4's cramped cockpit view and steering pull
Gary Wampler complained that N4's in-car view shows too little windscreen and that the car pulls left. Others said both are realistic for Winston Cup cars, citing Dale Earnhardt Jr, and suggested a modified cockpit view, symmetrical setups or a bigger monitor. The thread debated what realism means on a small screen.
Automated summary.
You are correct, the view does seem to be getting smaller. I don't know if
it's a trying to be more realistic approach or for the sake of fps, or a
combination of both.

There is a LOVELY patch for all you types who don't want a realistic sim.
It's called Nascar Racing 3. Go get it..Straighten your wheel to your

Ever sit in a cup car?
the veiw is pretty damn close to real.
the pull is realistic, you dont want realistic, dont buy a simulation.
:-)
I thought the hood in Nascar Heat was a different approach. Any ideas for
this in N4.
Barney
Or you can drive in Arcade mode which I hear is just a N3 physics port. Or
you can use a symmetrical setup so the car doesn't pull left (won't turn
left very well either though)

Thank you for the helpful words. Is it so much to ask for a different
in-car view? For Pete's sake there 3 or 4 arcade out-of-body-experience

Otherwise I prefer the physics of N4 to other Nascar sims I've tried.
Besides I do not recall any broadcast of real Nascar drivers where the
in-car view showed them with the wheel turned to the right when going
straight.

There should be an option to put the wheel on a bit to the right so
that holding the wheel straight would bring the car stragiht, however,
then you would have to steer a bit sideways when going down a flat
pitlane.
This is a feature so incorporated into the simulation that you can't
just turn it off.

elsewhere that the 'pull' is realistic. That is what WC drivers deal with
everyday. From what I understand, although I don't have any direct info,
the WC drivers often place their wheels on the spindle so that the
dead-ahead straight up tape marker would be off to the leftt, They still
have the pull, but this gives them the illusion of driving straight.
Somebody was going to work on a graphic patch that canted the incar wheel
like that but I never heard if he got that done.
Larry used to swear up and down around here about this, saying the
non-force feedback users were getting a raw deal. I've been using both a FF
and Non FF wheel and while each takes some time to become acclimated, after
a time you almost don't notice the wheel posisiton.
Laps and more laps is the quickest way to get adjusted.

for. http://www.bhmotorsports.com/n4_utilities/sd_cockpit.zip
As for the steering wheel pull, you can adjust a lot of it out by modifying
your setup, however after you run a few laps I think you'll find yourself
pushing badly through the turns. Try turning off the in-car steering wheel,
and you'll probably get used to the pull after mucho laps.

What kind of wheel are you using? With a non-FF wheel the left pull is
annoying, but on a FF wheel you don't notice it much at all for some
reason. It's still there, but feels much more subtle.

The view in Nascar Racing 4 is realistic. It's a realistic simulation of
the current Winston Cup NASCAR season, therefore it has to have a realistic
view that is as real as it is in real-life. LOL all those "real"'s make me
dizzy ;-D
The view is exactly the same as you would have if you sat in one of them WC
cars. There is other alternatives to this view if you wish to have you
experience a little less realistic. I really love that hood view, I can see
it's utility for pickup online racing <G> (and that moving inside-view in
the mirror is a nice touch).
Finally, it would be very difficult to "edit" the N4 view because the
virtual cockpit exists within it's own universe. It's not really in the
game model but in it's own engine-reality. You could change the view, but
it would totally change the aspect of the cockpit, showing parts of the 3d
car polygon shape. At best you would need a complete 3d edit of the virtual
cockpit, unless I'm wrong...

hear hear. What I would like is an alternativ cockpit view where the
windows area of the current cockpit view takes a larger part of the
screen. Perhaps also with the GPL letterboxing to reduce the
leg-spotting effect. And a bigger monitor, and a better gfx card, and
a better cpu :) Bonnet view, roof view, kite view is not a good
alternative IMHO.

as realistic as a one eyed man squinting through a small cardboard box at
his cockpit, maybe.
John
I think it is a matter of RATIO's....Yes the windscreen on a REAL WC car
is bigger than 2x12. BUt....how much bigger are the tracks? Compress the
huge area visable in a modern oval and compare that to what is visible with
N4....I would think the RATIO of a real track vs your monitor size....is
pretty close already. So yeah the space you peer out of is tiny...but the
amount of visable area is just about the same as what a WC driver sees.
Ever watch somebody leave the pits and plow into a wheel that was clearly
visible to the TV cameras??? Why didn't the driver avoid it? Because they
sit so low and their perspective really limits what they can see. And as
far as PERIPHERAL(sp?) view...With the exception of one Dale Jr, I don't
think the helmets used by today's drivers allow much side view....why the
heck do you think they need spotters???
So we have decided then that we don't want a realistic viewpoint, and we
don't want a realistic handling that causes the car to pull left. What else
don't we want? Tires that wear out? Fuel tanks that run down, pushrod
motors that can only turn approx. 8 to 9 grand?
Any other suggestions?

No you're being totally unrealistic. Your 2x12 inch view of the outside world
is totally based on the size of your monitor. I have a 21" monitor and have a
much bigger view that. If they made it realistic for your monitor size then
you would only see a 17" view of the road directly ahead and no side view
whatsoever. Are we going to base this argument on those people still running
on 13" monitors? If you want a bigger view then buy a bigger monitor. If 21"
isn't big enough for you, then buy a 60" Phillips flat panel monitor and hang
it on your wall. That should give you the view you're looking for.
Dave Casey

You guys are not being reasonable. Of course "realistic" would be to have a
60" monitor with a view of the track only sitting just outside a cockpit
with a windscreen where I'm belted in by a 6-point harness wearing a
Hans-device and a full face helmet. Maybe its a matter of priority and
focus. Yes, a WC driver can see under the dash if he chooses to look away
from the road and down. On a typical montor though, the N4 in-car view is
giving the bottom of the steering wheel and the view under the dash greater
screen real-estate than the window. Besides, I've got my own wheel in front
of me, so the screen just needs the dash & windscreen. By showing the
graphic wheel & steering column in essence it is positioning the driver
backwards 2 times the length of the steering column. (yes I know about the
option to turn of the graphical wheel, but that doesn't change the
perspective)
I looked at Mobil 1 Rally Championship, Viper Racing, NFS:PU. All of them
show only half the steering wheel. I would like to see N4 have an optional
in-car view with the perspective closer to the windscreen.

In race cars driver seats further behind than in family cars
(nearer the center of the car ). So, knowing Papy, they probably
seated driver at the right spot. All other things thay done right
so I don't know why would they do mistake here.

Yes, I forgot. Further behind and lower, so they probably
have good view under the dash.

Pull to the left and claustrophobic visibility. That's why I
love Papy. Since I was a little boy I dreamed of driving a race
car. Papy made it possible. The only thing that's left is hard
shaking. But I get plenty of that at my job (train-driver ) so I
don't miss it teribly.

These discussions are all nice but I don't see where if its a 22" screen or
a 2000' screen, you still see the "exact same thing" from N4 or any other
game sim in a cockpit. Its only a size thing...Right?
Game-sims are great but without 100% true peripheral vision is isnt even
close to "real-life." Until you're inside a true virtual unit it never will.
Will
it? It is all the same until we move onward to virtual reality but I guess
it
is all subjective anyway...eh? :) O well thats my 1/10th of a cent worth.

silence is FOO!
The Hans-device is a head & neck safety restraint which uses a neck brace
and tethers to hold the head in position upon impact.

And some of us won't be satisfied until a HANS device is necessary when
driving a sim. ;o)
