Rally Xtreme demo performance and control problems

Tim Deatherage could barely run the Rally Championship Xtreme demo on a Pentium III 450 with a Voodoo 3. Others reported low frame rates and stuttering even on faster machines, and Andre Warringa and Jan Verschueren found steering with a Logitech wheel uncontrollable because of a large deadzone followed by over-reaction. A few found it playable and fun, but the general verdict was poor.

I have a PIII 450 mHz system with a 3dfx 3000 AGP Video card. I downloaded this so called Great Rally Sim and cannot hardly get it past the Graphics setup screen.( BTW, I didn't know 3dfx was also HAL ?) Any special 3dfx settings needed ? or do I have a computer too outdated for this Sim ?????? Any suggestions ????????????? As always, THANKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Tim A. Deatherage [email hidden] www.timdeatheragecpa.com
Turn off 32-bit textures... probably won't look good on the V3 even then (if it does, compare drivers with me), but it will run, allowing you to get frustrated at control problems. ;-( Jan. =--- "Tim Deatherage" wrote...

Thanks for the advice ! However after my email post I first updated my Voodoo 3 drivers since I was using older drivers for Colin McRae Racing 2. I then ran Rally Xtreme in numerous graphic modes and the FPS is just TOO slow. Therefore, I assume that my PIII 450 mhz is just too outdated for this new generation Sim Does that make sense ???? and does everyone agree that PIII 450's are ancient ????? THANKS !!!!!!!! - Tim A. Oh, my lwff "works" as well (indeed, no FF), just there's no "control" over the car. Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn. BTW, HAL just means "Hardware Abstraction Layer" which is DirectX lingo that simply means: "Use hardware acceleration on this video card instead of software rendering" :-). The "opposite" of HAL in DirectX is REF or "Reference" which is the software reference implementation of all Direct3D features... or basically "software rendering". Actually ---I like this demo and am having fun with it. Maybe it runs better on a fast system. I have seen many posts regarding awful frame rates and I have had no probs. My system is an AMD Athlon 1.2ghz with 512 megs pc 133 and a GF2 GTS 64 meg. Maybe thats the difference. Time to upgrade those PIII 450's and V3's out there. Runs okay on my system - 1 ghz Celeron w/ 32 meg Radeon - and as far as the controls go, it felt to me like I was driving on loose dirt - isn't that how it should feel? Or is there some other problem that you are referring to? I'm missing several messages in this thread (most of 'm Andre's, oddly enough), but I would like to know too. Maybe my V3 is antiquated and therefore I have no real problem with the graphic and texture corruption issues. Yet I would not call at PIII running at 866Mhz "underspec'd" in today's computer market. Andre has a GF2 to complement his... harldy antiquated equipment IMO. Anywhow, for you nor Doug there was no indication of the game first under and then overreacting to your inputs?? Where did you download the demo and how big was the file? -I got mine from FilePlanet at 45Mb. BTW: as there is no FF in the demo for me I lack any surface feel, so another question begs... are you experiencing any force feedback from the game? Tough call since I am still fairly new to driving sims and have no experience with real life racing. Plus I was too busy laughing like a maniac every time I went off the road backwards. ;o) But I thought it felt right for driving on dirt at insane speeds. At first not much response, then the tail goes out, then good luck getting it back in line. If I slowed down it was less of a problem, which made me think it was not a controller problem but simply the physics of the game. Also I think rally racers make a lot of use of the handbrake to provoke power slides. The handbrake is on the spacebar. I didn't discover that until after the last time I played, I will have to remember to try that next time - maybe the secret is to keep the power on and swing the ass out using the handbrake. Like I said, I have no real experience with this, but it seems like somebody told me that once. > Where did you download the demo and > how big was the file? -I got mine from FilePlanet at 45Mb. I can't remember where I got it but it is the same size as yours so I'm pretty sure it is the same thing. > BTW: as there is no FF in the demo for me I lack any surface feel, so > another question begs... are you experiencing any force feedback fromthe > game? I did not get any FF, and I wonder if that is part of the problem. We are so used to games that give us some feel for the steering that playing without FF, and particularly in a game that calls for a lot of sliding, becomes very difficult.

Okay I just played it again and now I'm not so sure. The steering response feels digital if you try to steer it like a normal car. And the handbrake worked, but I don't have the necessary feel for it, so it didn't really help me. What did work, and almost too well, was keeping my foot on the throttle and braking all the way through the turn. This made it feel very linear and tight - to a degree that I think might be unrealistically high.

But this game would have looked average 3 years ago. I can't see any reason why they couldn't get this game running at a decent framerate on a V3 - there just isn't enough geometry in the game to justify needing a GF2.

Funny you say that.... My system specs: Athlon 1.33ghz 266fsb 384mb PC133 Ram 64 mb GF2 PRO. MS FFB-wheel (no feedback in the demo tho) *And* I'm still having probs in most corners - the whole thing is "stuttering" like hell. Best settings for me is 800x600x16, Mipmap at 0.00, Farplane at 600, no boxes checked. Yes, fun factor is high - but the rest is pretty lame - Imho. -- ed_ "Doug Hook" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:P1xk7.8008$[email hidden]... > Actually ---I like this demo and am having fun with it. > Maybe it runs better on a fast system. I just gave it another try again, the problem is that there is a MAJOR deadzone, and if you go over the deadzone, the control overreact majorly. Looks like this game, or the demo at least, was made for digital devices, not analogue devices. With the keyboard the car is much more controllable, but driving with a keyboard is silly :) Andre
I just did some testing, trying to get rid of the deadzone with CTFJ. Well.. I got rid of the deadzone, but unfortunately it ain't the cause of the problem. No matter what amount of 'gain' I tried in CTFJ, the car remains uncontrolable. Even in 1st gear I'm having an extremely hard time trying to keep the car on the road. When I enter a corner, I have to steer extremely carefull or the car will go into a spin. The problem gets worse when I try to steer straight again after the corner, because the car immediately snaps to the other side, no matter at what speed I drive or the amount of my steering input. Hard to describe it for me, but it feels like I'm totally drunk while driving the car. Enough time spend on this crap, time to delete. Andre

ED I have the MSFF gameport version (not USB) wheel and yes , I do get a slight stutter when turning fast. The driving view you use also makes a difference. If I use either of the 2 cockpit views then it stutters more. I drive using the hood cam and that one seems the smoothest. The problem seems to be wheel-dependent then.. I have a LWFF (older type) as does Jan I believe, who also experiences the same problems. Really, control in all other racing sims is as it should be, except in this demo. Getting old.. jeez! Andre

I'd admit it's difficult and if your not paying attention it will to an ultra exaggerated pendulum to and throw you in a ditch because of the large deadzone, and then once your out of the deadzone, extreme responsiveness. Just have to be smooth and not slide the car too much :) Thanks, Alex Andre Warringa <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > On Wed, 05 Sep 2001 02:00:33 GMT, "Alex Kihurani" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >I have absolutely no problem with it Andre and run consistant 3:04's witha

No, it's not my driving, it's the damn steering!! :) Andre
If you think about the view you get while driving a real car isn't the hood view ,where all you see is the hood of the car in front of you, the most realistic one? I dont want to see a wheel and another pair of hands in front of me. And before you ask---no I don't drive GPL in F10 view. :-) "Ed Solheim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:GZol7.9785$[email hidden]...
