New Nvidia reference drivers double NR4 frame rates?

Tom Pabst posted 3DMark2001 and NASCAR Racing 4 benchmarks showing large gains from new Nvidia reference drivers, including roughly double N4 frame rates on one system. Carol Bekker suspected vsync was capping the old results, leading to a long and testy exchange about vsync and buffering, and Pabst later admitted a color-depth error in one test. Others noted the drivers reportedly crashed GPL.

Is this just a typo? Could the huge increase for the PIII-800 be due to changed default OpenGL settings alone? Not arguing with you, just the huge jump seems fishy, esp since the FPS with earlier drivers seems *alot* less than folks were reporting with GF2s and N4 when it first came out. 32 FPS is worse than my V5 @2xFSAA - not max settings though. It seems folks were hitting 50-70FPS easy. Kendt
Sorry for the error in reporting the ExtremePC link......the "e" in front of the word "extreme" should not be there (guess my fingers wanted to type it correct anyway): www.xtremepcuk.com/guides/gfg/index.shtml To answer a few questions posted in one place: 1. The "speed settings" for D3D are designed to run consistent scores on 3DMark200x (which runs in D3D, not OpenGL). In addition, you would not want to use these settings for actual "game play" since they do not produce a quality 3D graphic, they are designed for speed..... not image quality. 2. When benchmarking N4, I use the same settings on the video card as I use for running N4....which for all Nvidia cards should be OpenGL. I would not find any purpose to benchmark my computers in D3D for N4...since I wouldn't ever run N4 in D3D in the first place. The picture quality is substantially lower than the OpenGL API....along with frame rates in the 50 % range of the OpenGL frame rates on the same system. "Your mileage may vary." 3. I have not experienced any change in the GPL image quality or frame rate....and wouldn't have expected any really (the FPS in GPL is maxed at 36 FPS....both of my "race boxes" already max out at 36 FPS....with plenty of head room I would expect). I have not had any crashing in GPL, since the new D3D rasterizer was released. And, although I have only had these 21.81's installed for a few days.....there has been no crashes in the approximate 2 hours I have used them in GPL so far........and I wouldn't expect any. I did test them for the presence of the OpenGL "black screen" bug in GPL.....its still there. 4. I too was surprised and suspicious of the frame rate jump on the PIII 800. But, I have used the "static" N4 benchtest ever since N4 was released, and I take care not to alter the video card settings from test to test. However, I do not actually use the PIII 800 for sim racing.....so it is possible the settings on a the video card were changed accidentally......but I doubt it since I always check them before running the benchtest. And, certainly....I do not have Vsync turned on for any of the benchtests....that's too obvious of a mistake to not catch.....and I specifically check for this since a few Windows programs somehow manage to change the Vsync settings from time to time (I have no clue how....but I have seen my Vsync reset before....and I hadn't reset it). I provided the PIII 800 benchtest results because I have them recorded anyway.........for anyone's use here on r.a.s. that has a similar computer. The only benchtests I really care about are on my race box....which is System #2 in my report. 5. You can not use benchtest scores to make direct comparisons between video cards only (or video card drivers only) on otherwise different computers. You must compare "apples to apples" and that would include the cpu platform and ops system, along with ram and chipset (including chipset drivers). The benchtests are valuable to me, because they tell me what and how my computer's performance changed due to the addition of the new video drivers (all else being identical to previous benchtest runs). You can not use them for that same purpose....to compare new drivers on my system....to what new drivers on your system would perform like....not in terms of direct comparison of test scores. What you can ascertain.....is that if a new driver increases frame rates on my system, and yours is similar, there's a good chance it will do the same on yours. That's all you can ascertain. I've had several email asking what Nvidia "utility" I use for making the card and screens settings. I have been using Riva Turner for about six months.......and like it better than NvMax....but the difference isn't totally compelling.....its subtle. You can find either of these and almost any of the Nvidia reference driver sites. I hope this provides a bit more detail for those who wanted it. I didn't originally include any of this stuff since in a way, that was kind of an "off topic" post. So I wanted to limit the dialogue on it. Regards, Tom
Tom, I think you need to change a setting on your D3D stuff to let N4 run without the Sync lock, your '50%' frame rate difference would improve a little I feel. > 2. Guys... I made an error when running the PIII-800 (System #1) in N4. I inadvertently had my desktop set to 32 bit color, and when I changed the resolution (graphic settings in N4) to 1024 res (I usually run that cpu at 1280) I didn't notice the res was 32. After resetting it properly to 1024 x 16 bit (instead of 32 bit which is reported above) the FPS changed to 78 FPS. I did not make this error on System #2's N4 readings....they stand as reported. Tom

Ummm, I think he just stated plainly that he ALWAYS ensures that vsync is disabled. ;) All I can say is that is one hell of an improvement, based simply on drivers. Rafe Mc On Sun, 16 Sep 2001 18:45:47 +0100, "Carol Bekker" <[email hidden]> wrote:

So Tom you are saying that the change in drivers doubles the speed of N4 and you are certain the vysnc is turned off? Well it just seems mighty odd that the new driver frame rate is double the old one. All Iam saying is the way games work that its quite plain that something is waiting for a vsync in N4 and the old drivers could have been running at just under 60 frames or so (being forced by the vsync top 30) and with the new drivers running at 60+ being forced to 60. we're both right, actually. :) it depends on whether you wait for vsync to draw, or wait for vsync to swap buffers. besides; if a program can draw an average of 59FPS, that doesn't mean one frame takes 1/59 seconds to draw. -- Gunnar #31 SUCKS#015 Tupperware MC#002 DoD#0x1B DoDRT#003 DoD:CT#4,8 Kibo: 2 silence is FOO!

Ed... They doubled the N4 FPS on my system.......if yours is identical to mine....then they are likely to do the same. If not...who knows? Please note, they did not double the FPS on System #2.....only System #1 that I reported here. Although, System #2 did show an increase in both the 3DMark2001 scores and the N4 FPS.....it wasn't as substantial. Hope that's clear? Tom
Carol..... I guess I just didn't understand why you would ask me....or point out (as you say) something that is to me......a pretty stupid question. So, assuming you weren't that stupid.....I was trying to find out why I didn't understand what you were posting...or what you were getting at. Now, before you yell at me for calling you "stupid" Let me point out that I only called your question "stupid." No you. It seems to me you can evaluate how smart the question was.....on your own? Let me ask you: Don't you think someone who regularly benchmarks their computer (two of them) and tables the results in a way that he/she can retrieve them regularly.......is on top of the Nvidia driver release in such a way that within 36 hours of their release.....he/she is reporting benchmark scores.....would probably know enough (and have a system or checklists) to make sure he/she does the benchmark testing with consistent settings? I might make a mistake on one test.....and that would be caught.....wouldn't it.....just by common sense that if I see a result that is really out of line.....I'd double check everything - three times maybe? Don't you think I fully understood would a huge jump in FPS that was? Of course I did......I even went back and reinstalled the 14.10's just to make sure I didn't screw those tests up somehow. I do use a "checklist" to set up the benchtests.....I could get distracted...and screw something up....but I will catch it usually. I certainly would make a silly mistake....for six months straight! To make you just silly happy......I turned Vsync lock on.......and the FPS is still 63 FPS (N4). The monitor on System #1 is a 21" NEC, I run the desktop at 1280 res....85mhz refresh rate. At that refresh rate, there's plenty of headroom for most of the racing sims I run.....more than enough....even if I did have vsync turned on (which I don't). To me, your question was tantamount to asking: "Hey Tom, are you sure you have your computer plugged in?" Sorry....it was a stupid question. Regards, Tom
Yes, but the point it the N4 benchmark as you call it is not a good tes, as yousay youself you turned VSYNC on and it made no difference, which would lead me to believe that somehow N4 or something insists on VSYNCS on your machine, I put those drivers on my machines here (all 4 of them) and did not get the 100% increase in framerate you get. Its just the figures you gave are exactly the figures to be expected with a VSYNC locked program, and are the numbers I get when I run my products. I didnt consider the question stupid, I was only trying to help, you may have a massive amount of experience in games and benchmarking, but I wager I have a little more. Only trying to help. Okay, Carol.....let's pass by the original "question" (it would have been nice if you offered some explanation for your suggestion......instead of just the "plain Jane"...statement with no support....but let's get past that for now). I'm not following your logic on this......if N4 was somehow locking my system into permanent "Vsync=On" mode (and I don't have any indication that there is a way for N4 to even do that....that setting is not in any .ini file I can find).....why would it do this on only one of my computers.....not both (or everyone else's for that matter)? And, taking that further.....why would the 21.81's all of a sudden over-ride this phantom bug in N4....on one system but not the other? Sorry.....but while "anything is possible" in the world of computers.....this is so far fetched....I'd hardly consider it making my top 100 list of possible causes. Also, why would my N4 FPS return to previous levels when I reinstalled the 14.10's....if your "logic" here can hold any water? I'm always suspicious of anyone here (or on VROC or in HG Forums)....who offers implausible answers and suggestion, and never substantiates them with their own data or reasoning. It reminds me of the guys in VROC a couple years back who had upgraded to V3 cards and claimed they could run GPL at 1280 res....with all detail sliders on "max"....full high-res cockpits and wheels....AND tracks......full AI field of 18......and their FPS was permanently pegged at 36 FPS.....on a PIII 450! And they'd swear to God to everyone in VROC that they weren't blowing smoke! Yeah, right. So Carol, post your 3DMark 200X scores.....along with your N4 bench scores (which ever one you have chosen to use), the complete system specs and so forth..... on all four computers you claim to have (with driver versions for video, mobo BIOS and chipset)....for the last 6 months....and let us look at the data you are claiming to have.....that substantiates your claim of some phantom N4 Vsync lock bug or something? Can you do that for us? And....if you work for Papy....and are aware that this kind of bug exists....and you are hiding it (and the fact you work for them).....make sure we don't find out. Regards, Tom
