Most Realistic Raceing Sim

Which is the most realistic racing sim?

A former GPL player asked what sims besides NASCAR Racing 4 offered realism and good gameplay. Answers ranged across GPL with add-ons, GP3 2000, NR4 (which Ed Solheim argued had better physics than GPL) and NASCAR Heat with its CART mod and converted road courses. The thread drifted into CART versus IRL arguments and jokes about road-car drive belts, with talk of an NR4-based TPTCC road-racing mod in development.

I loved GPL a couple years ago, but now I use a GForce and this sim is somewhat dated. What sims besides NASCAR 4 are realistic and have good gameplay? Thanks Ron [email hidden]

With all the add-ons, IMO GPL is about as good as it gets until maybe WSC is released. The updated textures and cars available running at higher resolutions make it look almost life-like. And of course the physics engine again IMO, hasn't been beat yet, as I'm sure you are aware, N4 is based on the GPL engine. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash ron behee <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I loved GPL a couple years ago, but now I use a GForce and this sim is > somewhat dated. Well, while it too looks a tad dated and has less than perfect network play, GP3 (2K) is still the most realistic racing sim'. My guess is that it will stay that way until GP4 is released. Whilst there are things to admire about GPL, hugely powered cars with no brakes or aerodynamics to speak of aren't exactly my idea of the perfect *racing* car and make for a relatively sloppy gameplay experience.

Ouch.. that'll leave a mark.... btgoss Seriously tho'...please note that IRL attendance is up and CART's is down...IRL adds more tracks and keeps a fairly good TV deal... So how does that not make it based on GPL's engine, if its an evolution? And as another poster writes... First things first- the only reason the IRL has any attendance at all is because of ticket bundles with NASCAR events- they can't give a ticket away to anything but those events and the 500. CART, on the other hand, put more butts in the seats at the last 2 events than the IRL could ever dream of if it wasn't for the aforementioned bundling. The street events routinely see 200, 000 people for the weekend. And there is no way that any TV deal could be worse than being on ABC. The FX/Speedvision combo will work nicely, I think- but TV isn't what it's all about. NASCAR is made for TV, and the IRL is just a low-caliber wannabe NASCAR. CART will live on the raceday attendance and the burgeoning worldwide appeal. The IRL should have died a couple years ago, and hopefully will in the next couple years(when Tony George runs out of money)- we don't need the gene pool polluted any more than it is, with half-ass drivers and has beens given any credence. The IRL is the only place they can run outside of local short tracks, which is where they belong, IMO. Just my opinion, but that opinion is that the IRL sucks and always will.... Scott Moore

I never said it wouldn't! I just wanted to clarify (unlike the way you put it) that N4's physics is in fact *better* than GPL's - although they are both _based_ on the same core. -- ed_ Biz said: > So how does that not make it based on GPL's engine, if its an evolution? > And as another poster writes... > > "Still doesn't change the fact that it's NASCAR, though." > > > -- > Biz > > "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand > alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and > the....." - Ash > > > Ed Solheim <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:XOFs7.2410$[email hidden]... > > "Biz" wrote:... > > > And of course the physics engine again IMO, hasn't been beat yet, > > > as I'm sure you are aware, N4 is based on the GPL engine. 2> > > > N4's physics engine is an evolution of GPL's, and to be fair - > > beat's GPL's physics hands down. > > > > -- > > ed_ >

When you have 1 person at the race, and somebody else walks into the track because they think the county fair demolition derby is going on by mistake.... that is not a good definition of an increase in attendance. Try DL'ing Aardvark Park and Donington, for starters (road courses converted from SCGT and GP 500). And then try driving a Stocker and a Champcar back to back on the same track. HUGE difference, not like the same beast at all. Thanks to the cooperation and help of the good guys at MGI along with the efforts of a few people in the sim community like John Bodin, Thomas Heineman and others, Heat is on the way to becoming something like the universal sim everyone professes to want, allowing different series, add-on tracks and graphics, and a stable, cheat-protected online environment for a full field of competitors. Not perfect, but a truly good thing, IMHO. Thanks to all involved. Cheers, Steve B. "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Last time I tried it, you couldn't join a Nascar race if you were running another version, i.e. CTS or CART, and vice versa. Also, IRF reports when anyone's using different data than the server. I'm not sure of the full extent of cheat protection, but at least the effort's being made. I've had some quite enjoyable road course races with Heat, but try to avoid the ovals as they're too often afflicted with the same problems as N4 races, from the sound of it - mainly the quality of the participants. I'm primarily a GPL devotee myself, but certainly applaud solid competitive efforts by developers like MGI who work with the simracing community. Cheers, Steve B. I was having a terrible time even getting a recon lap at Road Atlanta with the Cup cars. Found out whatever the default setup was intended for was NOT a road course. Once I copied the Watkins Glen Advanced setup over, I could at least get round the thing. The sears Advanced setup had better gearing but I had more problems making a clean lap with the sears setup. WG at RA with Sears gearing seems to be the best for me at this point. The car seems REALLY susecptible(sp?) to small bumps on the roadway. And that last drop off before the pits is a real 'cross your fingers' cuz sometimes the car will stay straight, other times it just will not. (see a good racer always blames the car! ) wait! Actually, the rear camber is not stored in the car or the setup files; rear camber is controlled by the track file itself, and hence the need for the Road Atlanta patch . . . which can be found here: http://irlheat.bhmotorsports.com/RoadAtlantaFix.zip ;-) -- JB On Fri, 28 Sep 2001 21:11:58 GMT, "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote:

You can grab the Road Atlanta rear camber fix here: http://irlheat.bhmotorsports.com/RoadAtlantaFix.zip It changes the rear camber to -1.8 left and right (fully symmetrical), which makes it easier to get a good car setup otherwise. Take a 2x4 piece of lumber. Place near the upper portion of the rear wheels. Then gently TAP the 2x4 with a very large railroad gauge sledge hammer. Repeat if neccessary. dave henrie

Yeah, I know. There are actually people who think these things with billboards tacked all over them are racing cars. Go figger. There are people that think slot cars that use magnets to hold them to the track are racing kit too. Peasants. KFG

I'm not a huge die-hard CART fan, but it blows the doors off the Ignorant Racing League. As far as another NASCAR sim, I'm still waiting for Papy to fix the SEGA GT damage model they implemented into N4. Nothing like doing a barrel roll 25 times and then flying 15 feet in the air, then having your car roll over so you can drive it to the pits, get repairs, and still be competitive in the race. And that's the REALISTIC damage. I suppose I really ought to test the arcade damage. =) > Thankfully, folks like Thomas Heineman and have been able to work > TOGETHER on the IRL and CART efforts for IRL Heat -- if we were both > as narrow-minded as you, Scott, then both IRL and CART fans wouldn't > be benefitting as much from NASCAR Heat. Hey John... you mind being careful where you drop that parachute of generalizations on being narrow minded? If being narrow minded means I think the IRL is a joke, well then I'm guilty as charged. I don't particularly like F1, but I still respect it. I don't even acknowldege the IRL as a major autoracing body let alone respect it. I have respect for the danger and the drivers actually racing, but not the league or the sanctioning body. > Then again, I would guess that the slack-jawed Papy-philes haven't > even noticed all the great mods coming out for Heat yet. Midtown Madness is a contender for sure. It's perfectly the way we drive ours cars here in Malaysia. JensSchumi BTW: Haven't tried Destruction Derby yet, so I cannot say anything about the realism there. But the title sounds already good ;-) On 27 Sep 2001 21:19:10 GMT, [email hidden] (NYR2113594) wrote: >>I loved GPL a couple years ago, but now I use a GForce and this sim is >>somewhat dated. They use splined connections, so you can get a little bit of camber by heating up and bending. The rules limit this to 1.8 degrees, because people used to bend it too much and have failures while racing. -Dave "Jonny Hodgson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:A37t7.10226$[email hidden]... > > Jason Monds <[email hidden]> wrote in messagenews:[email hidden]...

And the IRL still doesn't have any good drivers. Aside from Hornish, they have Eddie Cheever. He failed in F1. He failed in CART. Now he's bitter. The IRL? I'd rather not.
