Problems: N4 video will freeze after 10 mins or so but audio continues as if
nothing has happened. Nothing like hearing my spotter ask if I'm allright 10
sec after video freeze. Must manually reboot system to continue. Followed Tom
Pabst's Nvidia Video card setup guide and am getting 50-90 fps when running. As
mentioned, extra fans all around and side off case off. MB temp stays around
130c. Non N4 problem is that this thing will reboot at will. Can just be surfin
the web and all of a sudden it reboots. Same has happened running MS word. Also
froze when arranging Icons on desktop!! I've had a three day headache putting
this thing together. What have I obviously overlooked? Any known problems or
ideas appreciated.

New Athlon PC locking up in NASCAR Racing 4
Daddyo618's new Athlon 1.2GHz system with a GeForce2 MX locked up and rebooted in NASCAR Racing 4. Suggestions included checking the heatsink contact and protective film, power-supply quality, IRQ conflicts, underclocking the graphics card and a DirectX update for Thrustmaster pedals. The thread then focused on EldredP's Athlon running at 79C, with advice on remounting the heatsink and using Arctic Silver paste.
Automated summary.
Too Hot!

I am running the same mobo and
the temp on it is 25C. I hope you mean the cpu temp but that would be way
to hot also. What type of heat sink and fan combonation is on the cpu.
When I built this system, I put a mini copper orb on it and the temp was
high but not as high as yours. I put a SK-6 with a YS-Tech fan and it
dropped 10 degrees. But if your mobo is 130C you have big time problems
somewhere.

extra fans, that shouldn't happen. 130deg C??? That MUST be a typo,
you couldn't have a system running that hot.
Try underclocking your video card and see if you still get the
graphics lockup in N4. If it stops, then you will need better cooling
to run it properly.
What temp is your house/ambient at? If you're living in Mexico or
something, you may find it difficult to cool properly ;)

This sounds kind of stupid, I know, but it's easy to do- did you take the
little piece of plastic film off of the CPU before you put the heatsink on?
I had a friend who's CPU temp would shoot to 90+ celsius within 30 seconds-
I pulles the heatsink off, and there was the plastic- took it off, and it
never gets above 40 now. Just something to check.

My original post did have a typo...the correct
running temps are MB 35c 95f....CPU 53c 125.5 F.
I'm going to go back in and check the heat sink and fan setup. Man o man....
You didn't mention the p/s size. What size ( wattage) is the p/s? AMD
requires a 300 W p/s/ Could be the reason for the spontaneous reboots.
I would agree with the other posts though. Your m/b should not be
hotter than 150 degrees F, max! Get a larger fan/heatsink combo or
take the case cover off and see if the problem continiues.

PS is indeed 300w. Went back and made sure the tape was removed and heat sink
is touching chip. Case is off and ambient temp of room is around 72f. Still
running about 95f on MB and 125.5 on cpu. Are there any known Thrustmaster Pro
digital or Win 2000 problems that I am overlooking? Thanks for the suggestions
and keep em coming. Going into racing DT'S here.
Dan
there is one update for dx8 that is specifically for Thrustmaster pro
digital pedals. Made a big difference for me. I would get my soft pedals
sometimes and then next session they would be very abrubt. The update,
found in windows update, brought a much more consistant pedal operation.
Dunno if this will help your situation tho.

Is p/s certified for use with AMD, they have very strict voltage tolerance
requirements that if not met will also cause all kinds of problems, and make
sure you are also using the thermal heatsink adhesive, its almost mandatory
for a good thermal transfer away from the cpu...

Thanks all,
I will try the dx8 TM tweak Dave and see if it helps. I need to check with
supplier Biz to see if PS is certified for AMD. Not sure on this one at all.
I'll check tomorrow and post.

Dan, I don't know what to tell you about where the problem lies but I do
have an Abit KT7A-RAID mobo with a 1.2ghz. Athlon and I am using a GlobalWin
FOP-32 to cool it. My cpu temps. are a steady 50 C. (I had to disable acpi
so I don't get the low idle temps. but I also don't go any higher under full
load either) and I have yet to have a system lockup or reboot
spontaneously... so, I don't think your cpu temps. are a problem if your
running 53 C. under load. Try resetting your cmos and going with the
failsafe settings in the bios. This will usually set your ram timings (and
other parameters) to the most conservative settings. If this cures your
problems then try going to more aggressive settings in the bios (ie: ram and
cpu settings) until the problems return... that may be one way to hunt this
one down.
Good Luck,
Robin

If you haven't already done so, check out www.amdmb.com, a site
dedicated to AMD-based systems. The forums there are quite
informative. Maybe someone there has solved this already.
One quick thing to try is replacing the video card with something else
and see if the problems go away.
Good luck,

Uh oh...*what* piece of plastic film? I don't remember seeing that on
mine...Athlon 1.3G. It runs at about 79C.

FWIW we use a nifty heatsink fan combo AND a GIANT HUGE 20in Box fan to

My 1ghz tbird @ 1.4ghz runs between 35and 43deg full load. System temp
is low to mid 20s. You could get away with it in the 50s, but NOT at
79C!?!?!?!
Upgraded cooling is definitely in order.

Actually, I sort of got it backward- the piece of plastic film I was talking
about is on the heatsink, not the CPU- on the HS I mentioned, there was a
square of thermal compound covered by the plastic- with the plastic in
place, the temps skyrocketed, of course.
Sorry if I caused you any panic... :D
>Sorry if I caused you any panic... :D
Well, if I was Eldred I'd panicking at 79deg, but then again it may
just be a wrong temp reading or a (really) hot day or something. Maybe
he didn't take the plastic seal off of the thermal pad?

I dunno. By all accounts, my system is running too hot. I'm guessing that I
need to do something to fix it, but I *hate* dealing with the CPU. It's such a
pain to remove and re-install...

Even the best heat paste won't give you all that much Eldred, couple of

Something's not right, and this thing is stable ?
Are you sure that the HS is clamping down properly ?
What kind of FAN/HS have you got, the 1 Ghz plus AMD's need a fair bit
of cooling and the smaller HS's with a small quiet fan just won't do,
you need something similar to this one
http://www.globalwin.com.tw/cd_html.html
The WBK68 is the smallest thing recommended for a 1.3 AMD, even the
FOP68, which in itself is a pretty good product is not recommended past
1.2 for AMD use, and I'm sure you'll find most other manufacturers has
something similar on their website

To get that kind of temp. drop he must have had the H/S Fan on wrong and
then after applying the A/S thermal paste put the H/S Fan on correctly.
There is no way Arctic Silver drops temps. by 35 degrees C. My 1.2 GHz.
Athlon runs at a steady 52 C. without acpi enabled on my KT7A-RAID mobo. but
it doesn't go any higher under full load either. I have a GlobalWin FOP-32
H/S Fan and use plain old Radio Shack white thermal paste. Your temps. do
sound extremely high... good luck.

Assuming the thing IS sufficient, that means it's probably not connected right.

Well, I didn't realize it WAS a problem until recently. This system has been
running since late spring/early summer...

Eldred,
I was thinking about your temps. problem tonight while doing some late night
ng reading and it occured to me that you haven't mentioned what make/model
motherboard your 1.3GHz. Athlon is mounted on. I know when the KT7/KT7A
boards from Abit first shipped there was problems with the thermistor not
making correct contact with the underside of the cpu.
You said in a previous post that this system has been running great and
completely stable at 79 degrees. I know that AMD rates these Athlons to run
at 90 degrees but that's a true internal core temp and not the "slightly"
inaccurate readings we get from the thermistors on the motherboard that
merely contacts the underside of the cpu and takes a reading. I think that
if your system is running great it sounds like a bad reading from the temp.
sensor on your motherboard. Especially if your system temp. is 35 degrees
and you have all those fans moving air in your case. Something is wonky...
somewhere.
Just pure speculation at 1:00 in the morning.
Regards,
Robin

Well, Antec are supposed to be good, so assuming they installed the
correct model/size for your CPU, it might be that the thing isn't making
contact properly, because with a system temp of 35C, it looks like you
have enough air flowing through your case
And also, it's worth looking into what Robin suggested, because at 79C
it's incredible that your system is stable.....:-)

Well, they didn't install it. I built the system from components. As I said,

Well, I wouldn't say it's running 'great and stable'... It's locked up a
couple of times, but it wasn't consistent enough for me to associate it with
heat problems before. Now I'm not so sure...
I'll be checking it this weekend...<G>

The instructions at the Arctic Silver website are SUPER comprehensive
:) Probably overly so. The main points are to make sure you cover the
die of the CPU with a complete but thin layer of paste, align the
heatsink properly and then clamp it evenly (without rocking it which
may damage the die).
If you need to use a screwdriver to remove/install the clip, I'd
suggest you put a few layers of sticky tape underneath, to protect the
mobo if you slip. I've heard of many destroyed boards from a little
slip.
But the main thing is to ensure that the heatsink is sitting flat on
the CPU die, not lifting anywhere.

Hard to tell, but I'll check.
