IS Papy ever going to sort this out???

NR4 1.3 patch breaks games on HighPoint RAID systems

Users complained that the NASCAR Racing 4 1.3 patch stopped the game starting. Papyrus's Eric Busch explained that the patch's updated SecuROM protection conflicted with HighPoint HPT370 RAID controllers, that Sony and HighPoint were working on a fix, and that older 1.0.3 drivers or moving drives to standard IDE ports helped. Thom j. vented frustration and got step-by-step help, and a brief insult exchange with Biz followed.

I don't see any problem either. As a matter of fact I have been able to run my Raedon AIW using OpenGL without locking up the game for the first time apparently due to the patch. Hey Willard, How about some specifics? In all likelyhood someone in here can solve your problem cause it is probably just that....YOUR problem. Lots of help in here though if you want to ask instead of spouting off. DB (Don't gimme NOCRAP in E-mail)

daz, a couple of days ago in another thread in this NG someone said that on some systems, the patch installer by accident abbreviates long filenames? I.e., for example, N4mai~1.dll becomes N4mainlibrary.dll. N4 can then not find the file anymore. It's been mentioned somewhere here on RAS in the last couple of days. Ditto Here Too! & NO!! Help From Papy or Sierra! And No! replies to my emails!!! I never thought this would happen but it has & my opinion of both Papy & Sierra has gone down considerably! Allegedly mine has to do with the 'HighPoint' junk or something but nothing has been done about it and as stated in my prior posts a week ago the 1.3patch eats it! I never had a lick' of problems with 1.1 & I have not changed anything since, So why in the H*** wont 1.3 work? Really Stupid IMO!! A PO'ed Thom_j. Sorry, but I don't use my personal email to answer tech support questions. However as I stated in several replies to your posts here in R.A.S, some people have had success installing older drivers for the HTP370, and even tried to walk you through that process last Sunday afternoon (see the NASCAR4 1.3 patch problems with HTP370 RAID controllers thread). Unfortunately that didn't seem to work for you, so I suggested you wait for an official solution from Sony and/or HighPoint. - Eric "Thom j." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:rMYC7.162793$[email hidden]... > P.S. I am lost then Eric?? Why Or What does Highpoint or Sony have to do to make a Sierra product run correctly? It ran fine with 1.1 patch! please re: & inform.. Thom_j. Gee, we broke your game. But we already have your money so nya-nya-nya. Real nice. Remind me, if I get N4, to warez it. -Tim
The patch uses an updated version of Sony's SecuROM protection, which has since been found to have problems on some systems with HTP370 RAID controllers. Sony and HighPoint are both aware of the problem, and are working together on a solution. Its unknown at the time whether it will be a driver update for the HTP370, or an update to the SecuROM protection, or perhaps even both. I'm not sure what address you might be using, but there is no email at Papy for tech support. All such issues and concerns should be directed to Sierra instead. - Eric "Thom j." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ZnZC7.162826$[email hidden]... > I am lost then Eric?? I assuming of course that you have checked Papy's site http://www.papy.com/ They have posted information regarding the RAID boards and file name truncation. But that would probably be like reading a manual first <VBG> "d.willand" wrote:

I sympathize with you, and I understand that as a consumer you really don't care why something doesn't work or who's to blame, just that it doesn't work on your system. I really wish there was something I or Papy or even Sierra could do to fix it, but unfortunately we're in the unenviable position of having to wait on a fix from Sony and/or Highpoint. You may not need to do anything other than redownload an updated patch (that's if Sony fixes it), but it's possible you may need to update your HTP370 drivers (that's if HighPoint fixes it). If the latter is the case, I'm sure HighPoint will be able to give all of the necessary installation information. - Eric "Thom j." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:4OZC7.162878$[email hidden]...

Hi Thom, if you look at the following product description: http://www.motherboards.com/catalog/product_info.php?category_id=4&index_id= 7&subcategory_id=&products_id=307& You will see that this board has RAID support. Have a look at the 4 IDE-Connectors on the right side of the board. the blue ones are 2 standard ultra-ata 100 ide connectors, the orange ones are 2 ultra-ata 100 raid connectors. it may help to switch your cd-rom/harddisk cables to the blue ones, because these seem to have no RAID function. but consider this just a hint, i do not have know anything about this board apart from the product description. Joachim, I appreciate your helpful reply Joachim, but if I *have to* start ripping my 'computer' apart for just one program out of over 200+{and many of my programs are extremely computer taxing aka hungry} I have on my three 30gig HDs then something must be wrong with the 1.3patch not my system! {imo} Also I never had problems with the 1.1patch!! Thom, off course this is odd. But so are computers... ;-) But if you do not use the raid function of your controller, which i assume due to your question, just what would loose? your 2 ide conrollers should be equally fast (both ata 100), but the one you have connected your drives to (i assume) gives you the raid option which you do not use. (i would use the term "changing the configuration" instead of "ripping apart" ;-).) From what i know, the problem lies within the drivers of certain raid controllers in conjunction with the new sony cd protection code (which was introduced with the new patch). changing cables to the other controller is work of about 5 minutes which *may* solve your problem. i would say *may*, because both ide controllers *may* use the same driver and the problem would be persistant. the other solution would be to wait for new drivers/a new patch from either your conroller manufacturer or papyrus respectively. but since the security stuff is controlled and applied by sony, not by papyrus it is not the task of papyrus to apply new code to the patch, but to ask sony: "please use your old protection code or provide a better code, please." Important: If you use 3 HD's and one CD-ROM drive you are using 4 ide channels. If all your IDE connectors are already used (1 drive per controller), then please *don't* think of switching cables, you will definitely run into problems. My hint only applies, if only the orange ones are used and the blue ones are empty. You should then change the orange primary cable to the blue primary and secondary respectively. Joachim. Is your CD ROM hooked up to the RAID controller? If so, that's definitely not recommended by Highpoint. Also, are you actually using a RAID configuration for your hard drives? If not, and you have 4 or fewer IDE devices, there's no reason at all to use the HighPoint controller. You'd be better off using the board's normal ATA100 controller. - Eric "Thom j." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:NA0D7.163361$[email hidden]... > Joachim, > I appreciate your helpful reply Joachim, but if I *have to* startripping > my 'computer' apart for just one program out of over 200+{and many > of my programs are extremely computer taxing aka hungry} I have on > my three 30gig HDs then something must be wrong with the 1.3patch > not my system! {imo} Also I never had problems with the 1.1patch!! > Odd!!..dont you think? Again thank you Joachim, I understand everything you have so concisely detailed' and well written "but" {yes theres a but!} I firstly am not happy going into my computer doing this, Secondly I have my *Local Guru shop* do all my hardware work as with all the junk I have installed {hardware&software} its better for my peace of mind to let them do all the work so if anything does go wrong it is their butts not mine! They also are extremely nice about any complaints or changes/upgrades I want without any benchtime charges either.. I have no idea 'how many or what cables' are connected to my 3 HDs and my CD but I wont tear it down just to find out that it *may* work. Again thank you but I guess I'll wait.. If it becomes too long of a wait I'll just sell Nascar 4 and forget all of this mess as the aggravation isnt worth it to me.. Cheers Thom_j. Thom, i use windows 2000 german, so descriptions will differ. go to the device manager in win98 choose "devices by connection" as view (i am not sure if this is available in w98, but it provides better finding only) look for branches with IDE (or ata100, or harddisk icon) as description open all those branches and see what devices are connected to which ide-controller. only harddisks and cd-roms are interesting Joachim "Thom j." <[email hidden]> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:EV1D7.163449$[email hidden]...

Eric, Just to let you know. I have a Abit motherboard with an integrated Highpoint RAID controller. I read about the workaround of reverting back to the 1.0.3b drivers. I have the 1.0.3b bios on the raid controller. When I installed the older 1.0.3b driver to go with it, I got the same lockup as soon as I tried to run N4. No splash screen, no error message, no nothing. The only thing that changed for me was that I could not do a ALT-CTRL-DEL and end the Nascar 4 application. Before I would have to do a hard reset to get out of it. Perhaps others in a similar situation should hold off going to the older drivers and just wait for the official solution. Thom, when your PC starts up and tells you "p3 866, 256mb RAM, etc" it will also check your "normal" IDE connectors for HDD. It should detect you CDROM at the least. It'll say "primary ide master.....slave... .Secondary master....slave" and list the devices. If your HDDs aren't listed, then theyre on the RAID controller. Normally devices on the RAID controller will be detected after the screen is cleared, it'll say "HPT 370 controller"....etc and list the devices connected there. I must say though, Highpoint make the WORST ide controllers ever. This problem is in addition to their HPT 366 controller, which was even worse. I was only able to get mine running properly by setting it to UDMA 33 manually. Highpoint suck :( HTH Thom!!! Rafe Mc On Mon, 29 Oct 2001 01:03:32 GMT, "Thom j." <[email hidden]> wrote:

Here Rafe, I sent this via email to Joachim, Maybe you can make sense out of the mess below I found under Device Manager & also I'll check what you told me about boot up & pause the screen to see.. But also I do know HIghtpoint blah blah blah comes up on bootup on the top of the screen almost like an anouncement with name, version, date, etc.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here is what I sent Joachim, I opened device manager and I usally open "View devices by type" but I did what you said: opened "View devices by connection" and there is nothing about any Hardrives or CD Controllers. There is a "Shuttle EPAT Extrenal ATAPI Adpter" & this drives my external 'Sony 10gig SuperStaion' Tape Back machine that runs thru my LPT1 port. This has SCSI controllers & the mfg name is Shuttle Technology. Now when I go back to "View devices by type" {device manager} I have a seperate device SCSI Controllers & within this I have 3lines HPT RSM DEVICE {opened the driver here is Highpoint 7-14-2000} HPT370UDMA/ATA100 RAID Controller {opened the driver here is Highpoint 8-3-2000} [and here is where I updated the 1.0.3. driver!] + it takes up Interupt Request 15 Shuttle EPAT External Adapter {opened the driver here is Shuttle Technology 11-7-1997} and under the "Settings Tab" & under Adapter Setting is this: /W95 So if I have a Highpoint & Sony problem, I guess it is here? BUT. I tried disabling all these & I couldnt reolad Wind98SE & then in the BIOS I tried to disable ATARAID then I got a "BOOT DISC FAILURE" So I had to put that back to enabled, then boot into "Safe-Mode" to enable all "Exists in all hardware profiles" in all 3 lines again.. So thats all I can find.. And I guess I am screwed? What is your opinions on this Joachim? I am out of ideas at this point and now working on hour 14 of this crap! Any Ideas?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Rafe McAuliffe" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Thom, there is a separate bios for the highpoint controller which loads after your normal bios loads, this is just for the HDD controller. You access the normal bios by pressing delete. You can adjust the highpoint bios by pressing <ctrl-h> when it says (assuming I got the keys right!) If the first screen disappears that quick, it means that NO devices are connected to the normal IDE controller. This is confirmed when the hpt one says all 3 devices are connected to it. The solution is as easy as it comes. All you do is swap from the RAID connector to the standard ATA connector. From the picture I'm seeing, you move the left orange cable to the left most blue connector. The same with the right (secondary) connector. That's it. You should be fine from there on. You may need to let the bios know about the change (probably not though, it seems to be set to auto detect.) If so, just set primary master and slave (and secondary) to "auto" and you'll be set. BTW, those RAID controllers are more trouble than they're worth if you're not using RAID. You may want to disable it in the bios to avoid future hardware probs. Thanx for the info Rafe, and this has been stated several times now via the 'nice folks' trying to help. So I guess it is my problem? Sadly for reasons by my builders it'll have to go into the shop for 2-stupid wires because if I open the tower I break the seals & my warranty is then ended. I guess when I get the time & patience to rip it all down. Then I will take it over to my Gurus.. Again thank you Rafe and everyone else who tried to help! Wow, you obviously don't know of Thom_J at all do you? He is a lot more insightful around here than your post was. If he were you or I, yes he could pull his ribbon cable off his RAID connector and plug it into is plain IDE connector and likely be done with the problem forever, but the guy has confessed he is uncomfortable doing this. I undertand this, not everyone is as computer literate as *me* hehe, but don't rant on him just because he is frustrated. Geeze. He hasn't been ranting at YOU has he, No, it has been Papy and his RAID controller people. Thom, hopefully there will be a fix for the controller issue soon so you can go back to helping folks instead of getting flamed...I have a RAID board with the HPT370 controller too, I just don't use the RAID side and all is well, a fix should not be that hard if someone would just do it and get it out to the public.
SimRacer, First, Thank you for the kind words, Now, yes it is frustrating to have a "Sim Game" that I enjoyed not run because of a patch. I'm still a bit confused why my Highpoint stuff is such a problem for the new 1.3 patch but I'm over my head with all this crap, as stated before! :) I also hope this issue will be resolved quickly and as you well know I am a helper, not a ranting complainer but I digress. The only one ending up with problems now is the paying customer, since the cracked version has this copy protection nicely removed. The only way to urge people to buy their games is to use serial numbers which are needed for online play. First it's very hard to crack a system like that, secondly the cracking groups don't even bother with that. Another reason for focussing on multiplayer quality. Andre
