NR2002 demo impressions and the full-price upgrade complaint

Rick Clyde reported no force feedback, lower framerates and faded colors in the NR2002 demo. The thread split into those calling NR2002 an overpriced NASCAR 4 patch and defenders who said Papyrus owed nothing and the improvements were real, with some suggesting an upgrade discount. Hostility toward critics led Rick Clyde and another poster to complain about the newsgroup's tone.

Tried the Nascar 2002 demo... Here were my first observations: 1) No Force Feedback (I use Logitech Wingman Formula Force). I tried many things but no luck. 2) Slower framerate (than N4) 3) Colours looked faded compared to N4 (ran N4 right after and the colors looked brilliant) 4) The driving seemed just a tad easier (but that may have been only initial impressions however). Now these could be all demo issues... but so far have no great desire to purchase 2002 until I find out more about these items. cheers ...Rico

Some of you are so stupid!! Did you write the code for any of these?? NO!! How do you know it's a patch?? You don't!! also it's 49.99 try to get some of your facts straight. Destroy wrote:

If you play the demo and read a couple articles about what they put in N2002 then even you will see that it is nothing but a minor update to N4. Not worth the money. I'll wait a month and pick it up for $15. Although I do still have a $30 gift card from Xmas so I could use that in a month and then pay what it's really worth! $5.00 Vintook "WilburJr" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Some of you are so stupid!! I think the demo is not really meant for hardcore racers. Thats more to attract new customers. Most people don't pick apart games or simulations the way they are here. We are a very small group compared to what is sold all over the world. I don't know why you think it should be a free patch, I see many sports games, almost all actually that are basically the same game with updated roster and a few changes selling for full price. Yeah, yeah, yeah.............. you tell us that!! I've been buying Papy NASCAR sims since day 1 and to this date have yet to be disappointed. The only disappointment I've had is when TEN was done away with. You might want to read more, because there is more to NC2002 then just an update. you guys who dislike NASCAR racing so bad should start writing a new racing sim program then we can pick your stuff to death. You think the whining is bad now, just wait till someone posts the readme.txt file from the new version. Many of you (and I'm not including wilbur in this rant) talk a good game about refusing to buy NR2k2 because of the perceived lack of features, but you're just a bunch of whiners looking for attention. You'll be there right behind us "early adopters" because you wanna race with the big boys (and the big boys will be buying this new version - believe it). Complaining about an early demo is one of the most insanely stupid things you could possibly do. IT'S JUST A DEMO. Even more important, the lead time to produce a demo is so significant that the code used for said demo is probaby many generations old when compared to what we'll finally get in the retail copy. So complaining about stuff that may or may not even be in the final version is beyond moronic. There's only a week and a half before the game hits the shelves, so let's just sit back and wait to see what happens. (If it were me, I'd learn to get REAL cozy with Direct3D). In article <[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says...

I don't think anyone said they dislike it. They're just burnt out on it, IMO. Market saturation - too many Nascar games, and not enough other series. As I stated, I have a $30 gift card for Wal-Mart laying around so I'll probably use that to get it the day it comes out. Then I'll really only be paying what I feel it's worth.... about $15-$20. I don't think it's really worth the $45-$50 since I already own at least half of it now (N4). I like what they are doing and glad that it's coming out, just a little too steep of a price for those of us that already have N4. They should give us a %50 discount or something for being long time costomers. IMO, I think an upgrade discount or mail-in rebate for users of the previous version(that would be N4 only, NOT N3 or earlier) of 10-15 bucks would be most reasonable. Many other sw makers do this, why not papy? Should they discount the title straight away, no, most better sw titles are around the 40-50 price mark, why should papy be expected to be different. But they certainly aren't doing anything for their loyal sim buyers. I'll ignore the obvious flamebait... No, I'm saying the people who buy the sports games don't buy the yearly 'updates', for lack of a better term. I mean, the rules in footbal, baseball, and hockey stay the same year after year. Once you buy ONE, there's no need to get anymore. The NEW sales may be coming from people who don't own ANY... I would be hard pressed to argue how many people by EA Sports games every year, even though most of the time it seems they remove features from the game. The leap between Nascar 4 and 2002 is huge compared to the differences between NHL2001/2002 and Madden 2001/2002. Personally, I feel a patch should fix bugs and a new release should add new functionality. Rewriting AI code, rewriting the damage model, adding more detail to the camber modeling, adding support for high resolution textures, adding a driving school/tutorial section, and adding a replay editor with proper video export capabilities completely justifies a new release imho. Now if you don't want to buy it, then that's another thing. I just think we're spoiled because Papy regularly puts things in patches that companies like EA Sports would make us pay for. Jason

They oviously buy them more than once, because sports games are often top sellers, and there cant be mainly new people buying those games every year. Like what was posted before, i think that fixes etc should be updated with a patch, but new features like, hi-res cars, training mode, new sound, new tracks, improved handling, and updated season aswell as generally updated graphics hasto justify a new release. Why CAN'T there be mostly new people buying sports games every year? How many new people discover computers every year, or how many people who already own computers finally get a beefy enough system to run the new games? Anybody know sales figures for say, the EA baseball game(MLB 2002?)? I'm not really saying that people DON'T buy the same games year after year, but I haven't seen any proof that they DO. Hehe...ok. 1000's of hours would pretty much impossible, though.<g> You'd have to play for almost 3 hours EVERY DAY just to get to ONE thousand hours. Does anyone really play games that much??? Ok, point taken. 1000 may have been a bit of an exageration. But when GPL and N3 first came out, I bet I was pretty dang close to 3 hours a night for the better part of a year.

But OTOH, why buy the game if they load the demo with all the goodies? We need to also keep in mine that not all the bells and whistles are ironed out when the demos get released. They could just NOT release a demo at all. My God, what an uproar THAT would cause. There are too many variables to consider. Unless I'm hell-bent on having the game, I will listen to what others who purchase it have to say about it before I decide on a purchase. I RARELY let a demo impact my buying decision. Yup, and until you do buy it, you'll be racing N4 against the AI, because most, if not all, of the major servers are going to make the switch to NR2002 almost immediately. Have fun........... On Sat, 02 Feb 2002 20:46:09 GMT, "Vintook" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I agree that the demo shouldn't be expected to have ALL the features of the real game. But, if you can't use it with your wheel, f'rinstance, how can you get an idea of how it will drive in the retail version. That's very subjective - settings you might like won't work for me, and vice-versa.
