Hi,
I've been away from RAS for a while also. So when I saw the recent post
about GTL being a must have and being at Best Buy for $19.95 I went down and
bought it. To me, the promise of being able to race a GT-40 outweighed the
StarForce issue. However, I can't run GTL Config because I get a d3d9.dll
error. Do I really need DX9? The box says DX8.1 as minimum, which is what
I have installed. My system is a AMD XP cpu, Asus A7N8X Deluxe MB, and a
Ti4200 Video card. OS is XP Home. Will the Ti4200 support DX9? Thanks for
any help.

GT Legends d3d9.dll error and career mode surprise
A returning user who bought GT Legends at a budget price could not run its config tool due to a missing d3d9.dll. Installing DirectX 9.0c fixed that, but he then accidentally removed his motherboard drivers before getting the game running. Initially disappointed to start in a Mini Cooper, he came to enjoy the career mode, and others explained a file trick to unlock all cars.
Automated summary.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention the error is:
"D3d9.dll cannot be found. Re-installing the application might solve the
problem"
I tried reinstalling, but get the same error, d3d9.dll cannot be found.

@newssvr24.news.prodigy.net:
I doubt that your card has the native hardware to support dx9, but the
drivers should allow you to at least run dx9 even if you cannot activate
all of it's features. I see no reason NOT to install dx9c. And YES, your
card, a STUD in it's day...is reaching it's limit.

What have you set in GTL Config? Particulalrly for the shader level.

GTL Config will not run. I did install DX9.0c, which didn't help. However,
I did not have time to reinstall the game AFTER installing DX9. I'll try
that when I get home from work. As a note, before I installed the full DX9,
I downloaded the missing .dll file and stuck it in the GTL root directory.
This solved the missing d3d9.dll error message, but now I get another error
message, something about an incorrect entry point. I'll try re-installing
the game to see what happens. Thanks!
It's not a GTL file it should be in c:\windows\system32 if anyhere. But yes
a reinstall of GTL may sort it out after you've updated DirectX.

But the box says it works with DX8.1. Any idea why I'm having to install
DX9? Is the game worth the trouble, considering StarForce and all? Thanks
again.

You should always use the latest directx version, just wait a while after
new version release so that they (MS) can release a fixed version out, or
that you can hear about possible bugs. After a month it usually is very safe
to install.. and dx9 has been out for ages now.
I think the box means that GTL will work on minimum DX8.1 hardware. "system
requirements: blaa blaa... DX8.1 compatible video card/64MB, dx8.1
compatible sound card..."
I'm not surprised that it would need DX9 binaries to run (even in DX8 mode).

I see. Well, I REALLY hope it works because I'm dying to try the GT40 and
also the GT-350 Mustang. http://pages.prodigy.net/tjester/index.html I
have a pretty good idea of how these cars behave. The GT-350 that is, the
GT40 I can only imagine :-)

The box says it works with a DX 8.1 or better 'graphics card'. Using
the latest version of DX is somewhat of a given.

I'm glad to hear it. In the old days, a Direct X upgrade was usually a
formula for trouble. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda thing.

I ran the demo on a Ti4400 with no issues (aside from less-than-stellar
FPS). Did have DX9 installed, though.

Wow! What a nightmare. Installing DX9 did allow me to run GTL Config, so I
set the shader to DX8, but starting the game sends the computer into a
reboot. The MS error reports show the Nvidia video drivers as causing the
crash so I spent two hours (@ 21.6) getting the latest video driver. I
guess I screwed up somewhere pretty bad uninstalling the old drivers and had
to do a system restore. Fortunately I set a restore point before I
installed DX9. I'm now getting Corrupted Computer errors I assume as a
result of installing GTL. I'll eventually get it all sorted out. I sure
hope it's worth it! If I only had the money I'd upgrade and start over
fresh, but that's not possible right now. Gotta make this work for now...
-Tony-
Tony,
COuple of things to do after you "restored" the system, one is to install
dx9, because right now the dll's & other files are there on your harddrive,
but the info that XP needs is not, Due to restore {unless you have XP Pro
which actually makes backups & copies *all* files to a compressed file to
restore the machine... The XP home version just more or less saves a couple
KEY XP files, and the registry hives.
so install direct X9
then to get going faster, disable the antivirus, if you are scared at all
about a virus creeping in while installing the game, you could/should
disable the network connection (I just disable it in XP), or can by turning
off the modem, removing the cat5 wire, etc momentarily.
install the game, make sure it works fine, if not there is a problem with
the starforce (probably exists from demo, or previoulsy installed game) at
the gtlegends.com website there is a link to the fix for this I believe...
So, you will have to at least enable networking connection, browse to the
website (not a good time to check email or other browsing IMHO...}
At this point, if all is still good, get the patch while you are at the
gtlegends site.
Then, turn back on the antivirus, for performance reasons I suggest turning
it off while runing the game especially offline. Now at this point the AV
(mines computer associates, given to SBC DSL customers {absolute shit
btw...} it will not run with virus enabled by defaults, to keep it running,
I then had to make a "exception rule" for the GTL.exe in the AV setup
software... all is good now the kids can play and not have to disable av
then forget (dont they always?)

Thanks for the suggestions. I figured out what I did wrong. I deleted all
the drivers for my Asus Nvidia Motherboard by mistake! Stupid. I know
better... Anyway I now have the latest Nvidia driver for my video card. I
went next door at work and borrowd the neighbors Cable connection to
download 20+ megabites in about 10 seconds! Unbelievable. Took me several
2 hours at home with dial-up. When I get home from work I'll give it another
try. I WILL get it working. Thanks again.
-Tony-
OK, I finally got it up and running. Sheesh, what a joke. I wasted all this
time making this work so I can putt around in a MINI COOPER???? I should
have read the instructions BEFORE I spent 3 days screwing around. Not even
GPL made you start with F2/F3 cars. I'm pretty dissapointed, to say the
least. Well, at least I didn't spend $500+ on an upgrade :-)
-Tony-
Ahhh but the original Mini Cooper was so much fun to drive in RL. I remember
roaring around, throwing the car round corners and on one occasion, driving
across three lanes and onto the shoulder to get around an 18 wheeler that
decided to pull onto the highway without looking.

Having put the effort in it shouldn't take long to find the means of
bypassing the career mode. GT Legends is very good and the AI are excellent.
Also the initial cars are good fun, you may be surprised.
Cheers

Yes, you're right. I never had so much fun going slow! There is a very
realistic feeling I noticed. However, I have a framerate problem. When GPL
came out, I upgraded. When N4 came out, I upgraded. But... I had more
money then. We'll see...

something worth knowing about "system restore" in XP...
some stuff I was not aware of either...

there is way to unlock everything (by adding a file, I have the file, and
unsure if game is checking the contents of this file or just that file
exists.. some say just create new file of this name in GTL root) anyrate, I
had a buddy that sent me this file, it worked, but I dont have it here at
work, nor recall the name (use google and search this group, or look around
RaceSimCentral.com 's GTLegents Forums... Or if you end up posting I could
email it to you, if I rememebr to check this group fast enough, while I am
at home, sbc doestn keep post very long.)
:).
But you can race and win mustang pretty quickly, and the GT-350 mustang can
be bought pretty quickly.. all is not bad, it was actually great fun, and I
wouldnt have done it (raced the mini's if I had NOT have had to...)

A few years ago it seemed I had nothing but time for Sim racing. I know for
sure I spent over 4 hours per day practicing and racing GPL. But life is so
different now. I have maybe a few minutes after coming home from work to
race a little bit and un-wind. I've always loved the GT 40. I once met Dan
Gurney and and saw the GT 40 he owns. I surely would enjoy taking one for a
drive. But ya, racing the Mini is fun too. I just wish I had more time...

Actually, I'm having so much fun with this sim I no longer need to have full
access to all the cars. It's more fun doing it the way the game intends :-)
