Reinstalling NR2003 on a dual-core AMD system

Don Burnette asked how to reinstall NR2003 on a new Athlon X2 system and hit sound-related crashes. Larry recommended AMD and Microsoft dual-core patches, and others suggested toggling 3D sound and checking Audigy drivers. Remaining lockups led him to replace the power supply.

A few months ago, I built a new dual core AMD based socket 939 system. I want to re-install N2003 by Papyrus , what and where should I look for, in regards to updating a clean, new install of this sim? Thanks, -- Don
First the system. Have you installed the AMD and Microsoft patches for Dual-Core systems? If not, you'll get VERY choppy operation out of NR2003. -Larry "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Ok, I have installed N2003 and updated to 1.2.0.1 I am running, on an Athlon X2 4400+ , 2gb ram, Radeon X850XT PCIe 256 mb video card, Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, Windows XP Pro SP2 with all udpates. I have not, as of yet, applied the AMD or Microsoft updates, mentioned below. Have run into some problems. After installing and updating to 1.2.0.1, upon initial launch, the game would freeze on the intro sequence. I deleted the intro.bik file, and it started up fine. After setting up for my MS FFB usb wheel, and setting graphics options to high, loaded up Daytona in testing mode. Frame rate wise, getting around 145 fps in testing mode. When exiting the track, the game locks up. One time it didn't, and the short replay clip it showed, the car sounded very high pitched, like a F1 car. Shortly after, when switching screens, it locked up again. Does not crash to desktop, just freezes, no sound, no nothing. Have to power the pc off and power it back on. Any ideas? So far, have only tried running in d3d mode. Hi Don, I remember having similar issues with GPL and N2003 on my SBLive, which kind of forced me to update to an audigy 2 zs. After that, both sims ran fine in a similar setup to yours (apart from the cpu, mine's an AMD64 3200+, and the GPU which is an x800gto in my case). Have to tried the old trick and decreased h/w sound acceleration a notch or two, or even down to "basic"? This might help you tune in on the problem, wether it's sound related or something else. Giving OpenGL a try might be something worth looking at, too. All the best & good luck, Uwe -- GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61
Hello Don, I had the same issue after my last motherboard upgrade. I went from an EPoX NV2 Ultra based board to a MSI NV4 based board to go to the PCIe Video Card (X1900XTX) and was using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card as well. I could run a practice session for 30 laps or so, then exit the car to where the replay would be showing. I would get the high pitched sounds, and then the eventual lockup (usually not more than 10 -15 seconds later at most). I searched all over the internet, and found mention of a few cases where the SB card was the problem, and using the newer cards solved the issues. (I did know the model numbers to avoid, but I can't find it at the moment). I didn't have any issues with other games, only NR2003 I have since upgraded to the SB X-Fi card, and all is well. I had one other person tell me that they also upgraded to cure the same issue, but theirs still occurs. So I don't know for sure if the newest card would help or not, but it did cure my issue, which sounds almost identical to yours. I am not running a X2 cpu on my board though. I am using an AMD64 4000+, so I am not sure that the X2 part of your equation would have anything to do with it. Glen Pittman "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Thanks Glen. I have been considering going ahead and upgrading to the X-Fi card, and I may go ahead and do so, and see if solving this is a nice side benefit to it.. I'm not running the latest drivers on my Audigy ZS 2. If you want to find out wether it's driver related, let me know and I'll look up the driver version when I get home tonight. cheers, uwe -- GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61
Question, since you have the Nforce4 chipset, was the onboard sound that bad (or non existant?) all the boards I was looking to upgrade to have onboard sound for the nvidia amd boards... confused, yea probably my part... Don Burnette enlightened us with:

Ok, got back in town, and made some changes. 1: Installed the amd and winxp dual core patches/udpates Larry recommended. The funny thing Don, One of the first things I always used to recomend with ANY Papyrus product that was having problems was to UN-check the 3d sound option. LOL dave henrie

Lol, yeah, I remember those days! Don
I had exactly the same problem with the sound in N2003 after installing on my new system - Athlon X2 4800+, ASUS A8N-SLI, 2GB RAM, Leadtek Nvidia 7800GTX, Audigy 2ZS. The only way I could get it to run properly was by disabling the Audigy, and using the onboard sound. Well, ymmv, but for the most part it has made mine better, although I have since had a couple of lockups. Usually, if I pause the sim during a race, upon unpausing, it crashes. It also has crashed upon exiting the game a couple of times. Not sure if it is related to the Audigy or not... Thanks Ed, I may do just that when I get back. I have been looking for a reason to upgrade to the newer X-FI, and may go ahead and get one on order in the near future. Don

Ok, am back in town now. I believe, I have a couple of issues here. First, the overall stability of my system. I have been getting, on occasion, some lockups. Usually, while perusing newsgroups or the web. The frequency, seems to have been reduced, since installing the amd and Ms dual core patches. However, I have had a sneaky suspicion, part of that problem might be from the power supply. My new mb, has a 24 pin connector, and my power supply, only had 20 pin. ( not the additional 4 pin that goes beside the 20). While the mb manual, states that a 20 will work properly if oriented correctly, I will feel better having the full 24 pins in, so I ordered and have received a new Antec 550 watt power supply, with the 20 + 4 pin connector. Have not installed yet, but will sometime today. Secondly, I believe like Ed mentions, I have a sound issue as well. I have been wanting to upgrage to the Creative X-Fi, just needed an excuse, and I guess this is a good enough one. Hopefully, it will help in that area. Newegg had the Creative X-Fi Xtreme music for about 85 bucks, so I went ahead and ordered one today, should be here next week. I will let y'all know, if these help my issues. Thanks to all for all the great feedback, Don
That PS is definitely a concern. Especially if the wattage is low. For 20 pin supplies, ASUS requires a 4-pin supplimental connector (like one of the drive connectors) be attached to a special plug on the MB. At least mine does. I just got a new Antec TruePower 2.0 550w for $65. Problem solved. -Larry "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I don't remember exactly what ps I have in this new system, I transferred it from my older system. I think it was around a 500w True Power, will confirm when I take it out. I got the Antec 550W Neo HE, I liked the looks of the modular cables, so I won't have any extras in there to tuck away that I do not use. I just took it out of the box, and it indeed has the 20 + 4 pin configuration. I'll get it installed here in a little bit, work keeps getting in the way :). -- Don "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bt6wg.70798$fG3.39568@dukeread09... > That PS is definitely a concern. Yeah, lemme tell ya! Well, I was reading newsgroups, and blammo, complete system lockup. I decided, now is as a good a time as any, so I put in the new Antec Neo HE power supply. Man, I love the modular design, very convenient. Just plug in the cables you need, and leave out the ones you don't need, eliminating a lot of clutter. Now, I officially have a full 24 pin connector in my motherboard. Time will tell, if it will make any difference, if it does not lock up at all this weekend, I am probably ok. Of course, I do not think this issue is related to my N2003 woes, hopefully, the sound card will help that. May try a quick race later this afternoon though, just for giggles. -- Don "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8e7wg.70805$fG3.43770@dukeread09... > Yeah, that pesky work thing :) > > -Larry > > "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... >>I don't remember exactly what ps I have in this new system, I transferred >>it from my older system. >> I think it was around a 500w True Power, will confirm when I take it out. >> >> I got the Antec 550W Neo HE, I liked the looks of the modular cables, so >> I won't have any extras in there to tuck away that I do not use. >> I just took it out of the box, and it indeed has the 20 + 4 pin >> configuration.
