I do know that Tim Richmond died in a hospital room, practically alone
without any recognition from NASCAR about his career.
And you're right about his lifestyle causing him to get AIDS and die.
Apparently, he was quite the "player" with the ladies. He slept with the
wrong one, and then it was game over. I guess that's what a person gets
for having too much fun and not taking steps to stay healthy.
What really irritated me was how Dale Earnhardt never, publicly anyways
AFAIK, tried to strongarm NASCAR into acknowledging his friend after Tim
was banned or after Tim died.
The good news is, however, Days of Thunder character Cole Trickle was
roughly based on Tim Richmond.
