Anyway after a few hours last night of some test runs & quick races:
Driving model: So far I think its very good! I need more time with it
but
so far I like how it "feels".
Cockpit & panning: On ovals I do like the panning feature. For the road
courses this is
going to take some getting use to. I find myself not turning the wheel
enough going into turns
because I'm so used to the view changing with the movement of the wheel.
Vibrations and
bumps are reflected in the***pit shaking. A force feedback wheel would
work well
here I bet.
Graphics are really great! Of course now a 3dfx is a must. I first
installed CART at work on
a Ppro 200 and frame rate & quality just ok. At home with a Ppro
overclocked at 233 and
an Orchid Righteous 3d I was happy. Still noticed a considerable slow
down at the start with a
full field of cars at Elkhart Lake.
AI: some strange things happened to me during a quick race. All of a
sudden cars would appear
very very slow. No apparent reason. Curious to see what a regular race
is like.
Damage: Seems to me the damage model (I suppose you would call it) is
not as complex as
ICR2 or N2. That is not too many parts go flying off in all directions.
Just the wings & wheels.
But - its not too hard to get airborn!
Pit stops: It seems this is autopilot only, when you enter the pits the
car is on auto. You regain
control when you get back to the track. I would like it if this was an
option to turn off. It does
have several options for the pit stop however: recommended, splash & go
, other. The
animated pit crew is cool. Funny, when I've lost a wheel the crew member
still makes the
motion of taking that wheel off!
Related to the autopilot pit I think I've discovered a bug. When
testing, I spun out in front of
pit road, just enough to turn on the autopilot but went spinning back
onto the track missing the pit
road entrance. Well the autopilot took over, slamming me into the wall
outside of the pits. Nothing
to do except hit escape.
Race commentator: I'll say this is the biggest thing I don't like so
far. I want a spotter!! Maybe
a commentator during a replay but in the***pit during a race? Not
realistic and got quite annoying
very quickly.
Now I can't wait to devote some serious time with this sim this weekend!
