Potentiometers; Is this normal?

I received two replacement pots for my T2 from Thrustmaster (thanks!), because
my steering had a glitch where it would suddenly go full right for an instant
when near the center.  The first replacement pot had the same problem, except
many times worse.  I took it out and put in the other one and now everything
is fine.  Any ideas as to why a new pot could have this problem?  Are they not
QC'd?

BTW, does anyone know the exact specs for the T2 pots?  I was thinking of
buying some really high quality pots and installing them.  I mean, how much
could they cost? 5$ each?

I was having the same problem.  It was only noticable when you were
calibrating the wheel.  What seemed to solve it for me (which i don't
know why, exactly) was tighting the four allen bolts (or whatever you
call them) that were behind the wheel.  One or two of the nuts had come
loose on the inside, and it made the wheel fairly loose.  Once i did
it... boom.  No more problems.

I've had this problem in the past but cleaning or replacing seems to fix it.

There is another problem I'm having though:

The input from my joystick controls isn't constant.  It resembles a sine wave
that rises and falls slightly and evenly.  In GP2, it is enough that if I hold
the pedal still at mid-throttle, the rpm indicator will rise and fall from
below the lowest green light to the red light with a period of about 1 second.
The effect is enough to spin you in a turn if you are pushing the edge of
traction, thereby making it difficult to predict how the car will react.

I've tried changing some bios settings, changing the frequency setting on
the gamecard, and even moving the gamecard to a different slot.  The problem
remains.

It is just a generic game card that I got from Electronics Boutique.  Would
a new one fix the problem?

Does anyone know if there are plans to add commands from a Spotter like
during crashes?  I heard they were just going to include it with the
original game but opted to make it a later package deal to make more $$.
I'm sick of having a yellow come out and think it's safe around the track
only to find out at 180mph that there are cars in the middle of the track.
Thanks.

Sort of.  The spotter is currently available when racing on the Hawaii
network, and will be included in Nascar2.  It will not be in a patch for
the original game.

How do I turn on the spotter in Hawaii?  I have not heard it say anything,
and there have been wrecks galore!!

My guess on the specs would be +/- 10%.  I just bought 3 wirewound
precision pots from a Mouser Electronics catalog for $35 a piece.
They have a tolerance of +/- 5%.  I built a wheel for a friend with
pots out of a CH Flightstick, they looked like they were  cheaper than
the ones that Radio Shack has for $1.50.

Actually, messages like that are done by other drivers.  Only the ones with
regards to wrecks such as 'Trouble in Turn 3' , 'Big trouble on the
Backstretch' , 'A Car Twonked in the Tri-oval' are generated by the server.

Ok, yes. Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing text prompts saying
things like pass high, car so and so exiting the pits.....  I always
thought it was the racer typing it.  DUH!!

Oh well, I haven't seen those.  I usually find the wrecks by running into
them.

The version on Hawaii is not the same as Nascar2's.  Hawaii uses a text
version like 'A car twonked in turn 4' that is written at the top of the
screen where the other messages like 'Stay behind Car #' are normally
written.  I haven't been online in a few months, but back then it was
always on.

The spotter isn't under your control, it is controlled by the servers. My
experience has been that the performance of the spotter has been "spotty"
at best.

OK, OK... quit throwing that rotten fruit! <g>

The messages you described are being sent by the drivers, e.g. "Pass Low",
"Car exiting pits". The spotter messages are related to incidents on the
track, e.g. "Car spun in Turn 2", "Big trouble in the short chute", etc.
The spotter messages have not been very reliable up to this point.
