I saw this on rec.autos.sport.indy, and since most of you have seen a lot
of racing, who was your first favorite driver?

My first favorite is still my favorite.  Richard Petty.  As far as I
was concerned, he was the ONLY driver.

Who was your first favorite driver?

Bobby Allison.  I was with my parents on a Sunday drive and we were
listening to
a NASCAR (although I don't know if that's what they called them at the
time) race
in Riverside California.  If I remember right he an A.J. Foyt were having a
pretty good
duel.  I don't remember who won but I remember pulling for Bobby.  And
speaking of
A.J. , I've also been a fan of his for years.  He disappointed me at TMS
but I'm
still a fan, warts and all.

Hey I rememeber Dave Scarborough. In the 70's I believe he may have
raced some ASA races. I think he may have raced at the Redbud 300
Anderson, In a couple times. I remember seeing Mark Martin a couple
times in that race and it seems like Scarborough may have driven Jim
Blount's or Don Higgins" car one year.

Darrel Waltrip would have to be mine. I met him at Winchester Speedway
in Indiana on Memorial Day in 1977 for a 200 lap ASA late model race. He
drove a 77 Nova sponsored by Gatorade. He was pretty competitive
considering the other drivers like Mark Martin, Bob Senneker...all were
running the faster Camaros and Trans Am's. Mark was like 16 at the time
I believe and was gunning for rookie of the year for the ASA!

Gilles Villeneuve, all the way. He was one of the only F1 driver to have
mastered perfectly his car, and his talents were way underestimated. His
statistics don't show really his great talents.  He was able to drive a
F1 beyoung the limits, and only few of have been able.  His death was a
big slap in the face of the F1, like Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna.  Gilles
Villeneuve is considered as a God in Italy, so they have a reason for
that. Tifosis knows racing, and if they tell that Gilles was the best F1
driver ever, it must be right.  Jacques, even if he has some of his
father's ***, isn't like Gilles.  We all would love to see Gilles many
more years, and I respect him very much,

With great respect,
Good race at the Brickyard,  (-o-)
