advice please - steering wheels

by Yvonne Tommi » Fri, 30 Oct 1998 04:00:00

This is for my 6 year old son ( honest ) who is also handicapped and
therefore pedals are probably out of the question.

I have just ordered Microprose GP1 to run on a 486 100mhz computer. I
need a steering wheel. What should I buy as a first timer? I don't
really want  to spend a fortune. Is thrustmaster GP1 okay, or what is
better?

thanks,

>Colin, that would be a great choice!

I concur.  My nieces, who are 6, 8 and 11 LOVE to race with the GP1.
The paddles work perfectly for gas and brake, and they have no problem
understanding how the shift button works (I have them drive automatic,
and just tell them, in Need for Speed 1, to press the upshift button
once whenever the gear displays as N).

They're cheap, too.  He'll love it!

The TM GP1 should work very well for your son.

I have a GP1 wheel myself and even though I'm a little older than 6 I find the
GP1 quite good for the money. Sure I'd like a better wheel but it doesn't
require pedals and therefore was cheaper. You might even get a free game with
it. Now if an old guy like me can use it flat out for 18 months and find it easy
to use, imagine how easy a six year old will find it to use. I bet he can do a
Rubiks cube too... :-)

We (ThrustMaster) have recently released what is essentially the 1998 version
of the GP1 - called the Formula Sprint in the UK.  It features levers for
acceleration and braking like the GP1 but has 4 buttons on the wheel, much
better clamping and looks a heck of a lot better - and it should be less
expensive to boot.
