....upgrade an old non-3d game to a 3d graphics version?

There is.  I believe it's referred to as the "Cyrix/Rendition patch."
At any rate, there is one available that allows you to upgrade the normal
DOS version of ICR2 to the version that supports Rendition's Redline 3D API.
Unfortunately, unless you have a Rendition card, this won't do you any good.
One question I have is this:  does the Rendition patch (I haven't tried
it yet) actually improve the visual quality of the game at all, or does it
just improve the frame rate because the display adapter is doing to work?  I
know that in order the get the 3D enhanced tracks, you have to buy the
re-released game.  But without those tracks, do you stilll get true
3D-effects smoke and so on?

And has anyone else noticed that CART Racing doens't seem to be
available in stores anymore?  I used to see it (just this past Xmas, even)
at Best Buy and CompUSA in the racing sims section, but now I can't find it.
And I can't seem to access any of the patches from Sierra's server either.
Did they finally dump the product after the buyout?

The rendition patch and 3d updates are available all over the web.

rats...major bummer....i was just on sierra's site and they dont seem to have a
3dfx patch for ICR2 but i did find one for Nascar2,only it wasnt on Sierra's
site...the file name is but the ftp doesnt have it available anymore.SO i just
used Hotbot and searched the file name and found it on one of the *** sites
that has patches for all the games.Too bad because I think ICR2 would rock in 3d
and it seems to me that if they re-wrote the game to include 3dfx in the later
revision that it would be a no-brainer to include it for the first release as a
patch to bring new life to the game again. It still is one of the best racing
games out there.

They didn't re-write it to support 3dfx.  They only re-wrote it to
support Rendition's Redline API.  That was what 3D was back before 3Dfx came
along.

Actually, I've been having a bit of trouble finding much of anything
about CART/ICR2 on Sierra's site.  It looks like they're pulling it, as you
can no longer get the patch files there.  I can't find the game in stores
that have been carrying it for quite some time.  You can still get it from
their online store for $9.95, but for how long?

They did rewrite it in 3D (Rendition) and released it 2 1/2 years
ago.  Sorry you missed it.  It was great.  :)

Now that it's 3 1/2 years old and in the bargain bin, just *why*
should they invest the time and money to write a 3Dfx patch?...

I'd *much* rather they spend their time on GPL improvements/updates
or CART2K (or even N3).

Yes, if you consider 16-bit color better than 8-bit.  :)  And yes.
(And that's two questions. :)

Our CompUSA has tons of them, but in Sierra Bundle paks.   The game is now
listed as CART RACING and has the rendition tracks/cars included in a
subfolder
of the dos installation.   All patches are already in place.  Most stores
that have
Cart Racing still in a single box sell it from $9.99 to $19.99 US.
