Soundcard: Big difference in upgrading??

by Dave St.Ong » Fri, 21 Apr 2000 04:00:00

First off, sorry for crossposting, but these are the groups I visit the most
for my *** opinions.  In a nutshell, I'm considering upgrading my current
"Crystal Sound Fusion" card included with my 400 mhz, 96 mb ram NEC (please
don't flame me) computer to a Creative Labs X-Gamer soundcard.  Is there a
major difference in soundcards, and those who have this new card, what are
your opinions?

I upgraded my speakers when I purchased the computer, so I'm happy with
those.  Finally, I assume that my soundcard is soldered to the motherboard,
so I guess I just disable the existing one, and uninstall all files related
to it and install the new one...correct??

I went from the Crystal to a SB Live Value which I think is basically
the same card as the xgamer (and a bit cheaper).  It made the sound in
GPL much much better and gave me about 2 fps.  The SB live is probably
the best card for GPL.  A better choice for N3 would be a MX300.  Yes,
just disable the crystal and remove the drivers before installing the
new card.

Hey, whats wrong with  NEC?   I have one and it's very reliable and
upgradeable.   I got the Creative X-Gamer and there was a big difference in
sound quality and the CPU utilization was way lower than the MX300.   You
can disable the on-board soundcard in the BIOS and then shut the computer
down and install the Creative card all in about 10 minutes.   Creative
drivers work well and the card is supported to the max by Creative.   Aureal
is unfornately in Chapter 13 so I wouldn't bother with them and who knows
what Diamond/S3/VIA is up to right now.  Creative is the only safe way to
go.  IMO

Yes - I bought a soundblaster live! value for 56 bucks on e-bay and it was
worth every penny....upgraded my old awe-64. Going to go to bb and buy a 150
buck creative labs subwoofer/4 tweeter:_) speaker system to back up the
card.

Playing SOF with the live! card and four speakers is completely different
than the awe-64 with two good speakers....

by the way - I was playing commandos a while back and got stuck on the
waterfall mission while using my old awe-64. I installed the live card -
booted up commandos - and noticed no real difference -wasn't surprised
commandos is not big on sound effects.... Then I came across the waterfall.
It sounded like a real waterfall - I moved back and forth across the
waterfall for about 5 minutes - just revelling in the sound -:)
