OK, so when I race on VROC, I often get disconnected near the end of the
race.  First I'll hear what sounds like a Windows system sound, and this
takes out the sound normally.  Then I get disconnected about half a minute
later.  I'm pretty sure the connection is disconnecting itself after 30
minutes of not bringing up a new web page (the "connection will close after
30 seconds" box has come up while in the VROC room").  How do I get it to,
like, remain connected now matter how long the freakin' browser sits
there?!?  I type this out in a fury after being disconnected near the end of
another race!!!  uuuuuuggggghhhh...

Look for something like "disconnect if idle for more that [30] minutes"
check box somewhere in the dialup properties.

In Win 98 go to Control Panel ----> Internet options --->Connections
tab--->Hilight the particular connect DUN (if more than one), click on
setting button----> Advanced button---> uncheck box "disconnect if idle for
xxx miutes" also probably uncheck" disconnect if connection no longer
needed" . OK your way out and try the connect again

Surely that can't be it. The idea of disconnecting is if the line has
been idle for xx minutes.  However, if you are in a race on Vroc, then I
guarantee that your line isn't idle at all.  You're receiving loads of
packets of info from the server that you are racing on.

Compelling argument to be sure, but it doesn't stand up.  I know for a fact such
an option will shut you down even while you are in the midst of a file download.
And surely much data is being recieved then as well.  I'll bet he's on to
something here............

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

Whether the "line" is idle or active is of no consequence. All that
matters is whether the OS "thinks" the line is idle or not.

It's not the line that dictates whether a system is idle, it's the input
devices, ie. mouse and keyboard. Joystick doesn't constitute as an input
device in Windoze.

The problem is cured by disabling the "disconnect if idle ..." option.

Well you learn something new every day.  Cheers guys!  Must admit, I've
never had this problem occur with any of my own connections - about half
dozen different ones - and they are all set to 'disconnect if idle for
more than 20 minutes' in IE.  However in the connectoid settings
themselves the 'disconnect if idle' option is not ticked.

I've never had problems when downloading and generally leave the
computer to get on with it when doing long downloads, actually leaving
the room and coming back from time to time just to see how it's getting
on.  I suspect there's more to this than meets the eye, ie how you
connect - whether through IE itself, a specific piece of software - I
sometimes use Turnpike - or a connection.exe launcher etc. Gotta test
this one out for myself. ;-)
