HELP ON GP2

by richard.h.. » Thu, 22 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Thanks to everyone who answered my previous plea for help,I`m here
again still struggling to get to terms with F1GP2.
I am trying to be competetive at Interlagos and have tried all sorts
of ways of improving my times.I have just started trying to control the
car without steering help on and I am finding it a NIGHTMARE!!
With steering help on my qualifying time is 1.17.683 which gives me
around fifth place on semi-pro level, whereas my race time is around
1.21.xxx (around 3 seconds off the pace).I read somewhere that steering

help can hinder lap times so I turned it off.I am using a wingman extreme
joystick with all steering aids off,low sensitivity set at 100% for
steering, acceleration and braking and a steering lock of 18 degrees.
I have tried using the default control option settings but these seem
to be better for me(with default settings I find it undriveable).
The problem I have now is that I can very rarely do a full lap
without coming off at some point and its DRIVING ME ***Y INSANE!!!At
least with steering help on I could complete lap after lap without spinning
off and throwing my joystick out of the window. The car is very nervous,
even though I have 100% low sensitivity on,and is very unforgiving if
you so much as touch the rumble strip.Trying to acelerate out of a corner
and I always end up looking back where I have just come from.
When I do manage to string a few corners together and actually complete
a whole lap(about 1 in 5) my times are now even worse(1.21.xxx in practice
session). The thing is I can physically tell I am going slower but I am
unable to enter/exit corners faster as I always spin off. With steering help
on I am able to be faster around corners and throw the car around a little

without fear of spinning, but if it is stopping me going faster than 1.17.xxx
in qualifying then I would rather not use it.

1.) Does steering help off give you an advantage?

2.) Any suggestions or comments on my control method set up

3.) Do I switch back to steering help on or persevere without it
(I would rather not use any form of help at all)

Being quite competent and able to win races on ace level on GP1 I am

getting more and more frustrated at not being able to be compete on only
semi-pro level so please don`t tell me to drop to rookie/amateur level
as I have to bite my lip to play on semi-pro(It`s a matter of pride).

I would say not, if there is any at all, it is very small.

Practice. Seriously it is difficult at first. It took me months to
re-learn F1GP after I switched off steering help.

You could always turn the opps level down. Eventually you will get
better and you will be able to turn them back up.

Well it's just a matter of perspective. I would rather run competetivly
at a lower opps without relying on the computer to steer for me than run
on ace with the program saving me from my mistakes. It's up to you, no
shame either way.

Welp, you actually get to drive the car. With the HELP on you hold the j-stick
and watch the computer drive around. ie "without fear of spinning". My friends
8 year old son has alot of fun with that.

Nope.

Good.

Did you win ACE level races in GP1 with or without the steering Help?
I have found GP2 to be very similar to GP1 in the reguard.

Try reducing the steering lock. When I began racing at Monaco, I kept
increasing it because I couldn't cope with tight corners like Loews and
La Rascasse, but to no avail. I later realized that I was steering *too
much* and the front tyres were sliding. I now have it set to 12 degrees,
and it's perfect for Monaco.

Before blaming yourself or the joystick setup, I would suggest taking a
look at your setup. You car has probably a huge amount of oversteer,
steering help compensates for that but when you turn it off you spin as
soon as you turn the wheel. Options: reduce front wing, stiffen front,
soften rear.

Funnily enough, I wish there was another level above Ace (something like
Super-Ace, or Insane ;-)). As it is now, there is a large gap between my
best qualifying times and the ones achieved by CCs.
On the other hand, I'm very satisfied about how the performance changes
from qualifying to race. I can do 1:16.9 in qualifying at Monaco, 1
second less than the CCs at Ace level, but the race is a different
matter, and I haven't yet managed to go below 1:21.6. It seems that you
have to work on your race setup as much as on the qualifying setup.
