Need help OPTIMIZING my computer!

by c » Wed, 26 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I just picked up ramboost on a recomedation here. and after installing it it
showed only 28% ram free (of 64mb).
So I rebooted, and right after reboot I still only have 24-28% free (around
16-19 mb I think).
What's the deal with that?  I ended my clipboard utility, and norton
antivirus so i only had three processess runing (ramboost, explorer,
systray)
and still less than 30% ram free.
I need some help!
I'm very cmoputer savvy so any advice I'd be able to follow....

Thanx!

Did you run msconfig??
Check to see which applications are being run at startup.
You might find some there to weed out.
I take it you're running '98 and not 2000 or NT?

You could try Cacheman from http://www.outertech.com/    Sounds like it
might be what you need, but I haven't noticed any improvements (having
256mb as I do ;-)

Need help OPTIMIZING my computer!

My sims run fine....  GPL with slider halfway, 640-480, all effects, 5
sounds.  Not great, but good enough to keep me happy.
I'm running a 333mhz amd-k6-2, 64 mb pc100, 1 mb cache on MB (whether that
makes any difference or not), win 98, 16mb Banshee video, and SB PCI-64
sound
and I've weeded most of the ***out of my start-up, but didn't mess with
the ones I didn't know what they were.
I just don't understand how right after start-up, I only have 28% of free
memory.  Obviously its enough to run GPL or whatever, but I'm sure most of
the rest of it is getting wasted.
Anyone have any swap-file secrets??  I've heard a lot about them, but never
messed with it.  I have an 8.4 gig cr-fireball (quantum) with a 6.4
partition (windows 98) and a 2 gig partition (supposed to be for linux, but
it won't install because of the stupid 1024 rule).  With the above mentioned
system any recommendations for swap???

So for the record here's what's startin' up according to MSCONFIG

ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Norton Auto-Protect (I can ctr-alt del that one if I want, but I like it to
start up automatically)
CriticalUpdate  (hmm... I guess that one could go...)
EnsoniqMixer  (starter.exe   -   I assume its neccessary?)
LoadPowerProfile  ( i thought I turned the second one of these off?  well,
I'm unclicking it now)
SchedulingAgent
BCDetect
Yankee Clipper Plus (great clipboard utility, doesn't take up barely any
ram)

So that's it.  A little longer list than I thought it would be...
Any obvious culprits?

or is only having 25% free ram normal?

sorry for all the questions.. any help would be great.

Best advice is to move up to 126 meg. If you're running 98 or 2K nothing
much you can do to 68 meg that will leave you with enough for any decent
sim.

Exchange rates have this effect on RAM (as have hasty fat fingers on a
keyboard)
Try 64 & 128

Any time your resources are being sucked up beyond belief, look for anything
with the words 'Norton' or 'Symantec' and get rid of them.

The scheduling agent can be dumped, too.
