NFS (the first one) Install Problems

I've heard a lot of people say the original NFS was still the best, so I
picked it up really cheap the other day. I can't install it though. Every
time I try, I get an error message. It says :

"The instruction at 0041d285 referenced memory at fffffff. The memory could
not be read from. "

and that's it. Very annoying. I have a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP, with recent
drivers (I think they're the newest available) and DirectX 7a (which I just
reinstalled to see if that would help). I'd really appreciate some help on
this one if anyone has any tips. Thanks a lot.

Just guessing here, but the original NFS is probably old enuf to be a DOS
game isn't it?  You could try rebooting in DOS mode.

This is absolutely correct. It is a DOS game. It doesn't use DirectX
and will not even take advantage of your 3Dfx card, so don't expect
stellar graphics (although they were top-notch when the game was new.)
But the cars are great, the gameplay is excellent, and after all, it
is the granddaddy of a great series of racing games!

Are you sure it doesn't use DirectX? It does have DirectX 2 and 3a on the
CD, and it makes you install one of these before you can even install the
game. I will try rebooting in DOS mode and trying that. There are both DOS
and Windows installation programs included, so I would like to be able to
use the Windows version. Do you think EA tech support will even respond to a
question about such an old game? I have my doubts. Thanks for the tips.
