Blown Engines in NCR2! Help

by BSPN » Sun, 28 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Hi Guys...

Is it true that what the spotter says to you after a blown engine will
indicate whether you did by over-reving, or if it was a random failure?
I'm running a WC and a Busch series, and I've had 6 blown engines in
about 22 races, and unless Penske is building my engines <G>, that seems
a little more than "random"....Every time, the spotter says that
"something let go in the engine"...I've heard that if you are
responsible via abuse, he will say something like "you blew up the
engine"...I've heard the "watch your gauges" warning when my gearing has
been wrong while I'm working on setups, and I usually correct it, and in
the none of the races did I get that warning, or see problems in the
gauges....

So the question is....is it "one of dem racin' things" or should I
rethink my gearing (I'm not exactly a saint with my RPMs <G>)...

Thanks,
Lou B.

usually, when I blow one -due to overrev, I think he just says "you blew
the engine" --due to crash, he says "looks like we lost that motor",
and I never run with player breakdowns on, so I don't know about the
rest.   :)

i can tell you this much. if you think its your gears then i probably is, i
know from experience that a little over reving will cost you the motor in a
long run race. i have blown it up many times with just a few laps too go.
man does that hurt when your leading a 50% race. but the oil pressure will
show signs that something is amiss. it will start flashing the light more
often and the pressure will start to fall off. i have blown 1 up in a race
in n2 but i dont use random breakdowns so cant tell ya for sure what the
spotter said.

He will say "Something turn loose in the motor" if your Robert Yates engine
blow up due to random failure.

Also in nascar2 if you run into this problem on longer races and your oil
pressure light stays on if you pit the crew will repair it...one thing that
kills me is places where i shift.  i tend to over ev 3rd coming out of the
corners before i switch to 4th..

You will always be warned to watch your gauges if you blow an engine due
to overrevving...usually twice before it actually lets go. If you're
getting these warnings early in the race then chances are your gearing
needs some major adjustments in the garage. The only thing you can do is
let of the gas earlier and coast into the corners, sacrificing a little
speed and hoping for a decent finish. Random failures can happen at any
time with no warning and DO seem to occur more often than in real life.

I've had the same thing, and I made the 4th gear so long it sounded like I
was driving a John Deere tractor. To make a long story short: Don't use
player breakdowns and it will make your evenings (or whenever you sit
behind your PC) a lot happier ;-)

Cheers,

Hey.. Wait a minute! I've blown my engine plenty of times by
over-revving and he's never said "Watch your gauges" or anything else
for that matter. I guess I got N2 "Lite".

The situation where the spotter says, "Watch your gauges", comes during
a long run with 4th gear set too low.  If on almost every lap you light
up the warning light, eventually you overheat the oil and the oil
pressure begins to drop.  Eventually if you don't start letting off the
gas to keep the warning light off, the engine will just expire.  This is
different from over-revving the engine and just plain tearing it apart.

I got the "watch your guages" from the spotter at bristol.  I
accidentally raced with my qual setup.  If you keep over-revving the
motor and keep the oil light flashing, hell say that.
