Weve talked about ultra-realistic simulations here before and how much would
we pay for this "true sim".  I was just reading on Kiwisim that Steel Beasts
Pro personal edition will sell for $125 usd (I had to read that a few times
before it sunk in).

How many would pay that kind of dough for a racing sim with ultra realistic
vehicle physics?  Would anyone pay that much for an rFactor Professional
edition?

BTW there is a version called Steel Beast 2 coming in 07' for the "not so
***".  What would you prefer?

Yes, I would pay that much - it's not that much anyway.

Steel Beasts Pro is aimed at more of a business (army) market though for
training whilst making it available for enthusiasts alike - affordable
for every soldier's laptop.

Even so iRacing originally announced "No one else is making true
cost-effective PC-based auto racing simulations that are useful and
effective for training real race car drivers."

I guess we will wait and see...

The debate has opened up a few times, particularly when we had the
drought of racing sims other than Nascar. Then it was recognised we are
a niche group and the only option may be to pay premium rates for such
low volumes. Simple economics really.

However, when it comes to the crunch I think that within the niche group
of sim racers there is a further tiny niche group that would be prepared
to pay more than the average fps title.

The concern by many that rfactor and nkpro were rip offs at launch due
to the lack of a material suggests that the concept of investing in a
physics engine and either relying on the community or commercial add ons
to complete the package is not particularly well bought into.

Quite why the comparison with software is made so closely to titles
selling in the hundreds of thousands when we wouldn't compare a quality
controller with a standard console one I am not sure. A killer sim like
GPL was in its time which the community would all get behind and bring
together the fragmented mess it is in now would be worth many times a
standard priced product IMHO.

I certainly would pay as much.  If it were the ultimate of the ultimate, I
could sell LFS, N2003, rFactor, NetKar Pro, GTR, GTL, and Viper Racing (to
name a few) and still have some cash left over.

Problem is there is no way in the near future that anyony can convey
what it really feels like to be in a race car on a road course. The
current crop of sims do a great job of visuals and even some of the FF
effects are quite good (rumble strips sound for example). There are
some (around $2K US I believe) setups that try and toss your body
around to give you input but the reality is your body doesn't move in
a race seat with 5-6 point harnesses on. It WANTS to, but it can't. So
I guess what I am saying is the sims that are out now are very good at
doing what is possible, giving you a sense of being there. I use them
for practice at my "local" tracks (Watkins Glen, Limerock Park) but as
good as they are they don't have the correct cues in them that we (RL)
use to judge for turn in, so it's more of a fun practice than a
practical one. Have fun with them, if you're young enough who KNOWS
what 10-20 years will bring!

As for SB, I have the original and will get SB2 when it comes out.
Graphics are a big part of the immersion in a game, and from what I
understand it will be gorgeous as well as quite "realistic".

If Uncle Same wants to draft me, he's going to have to spend much more than
120 Smackeroos.

We could use it for Rascar, but someone would complain they were blown
right off the road...

Reading comprehension isnt a strong point eh?  I won't even bother trying to
reassert the correlation.
