HELP! MSCDEX GP2

by Mark » Sun, 15 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I'm using WIN95 and while I can play GP2 I would like to see if it's
faster in ms-dos.  The problem I'm having is when I restart in ms-dos
mode I lose my cd-rom drive.  The game begins to load and then MSCDEX
missing comes up and that's it.  I've checked the config.sys files to
try and locate the driver but it's not there.  Thanks in advance for any
help offered.

MSCDEX is located in your \WINDOWS\COMMAND directory.

BTW, MSCDEX is loaded in AUTOEXEC.BAT not CONFIG.SYS. If you're lucky,
you might find a line like this in AUTOEXEC
REM by Windows setup: D:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE D: .......etc. The
etc is you're specific info. I think Windows is supposed to "unrem"
this when running MS-DOS mode. I have a DOS startup menu that allows
me to keep from starting 95 at all.

Mark,
All you need to do is open c:\windows\dosstart.bat and add an entry
lh MSCDEX.EXE /D:OEMCD001 /L:K
If the file doesn't exist just create it. This file is executed when
you Start->Shut Down->Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. If you
press F8 when booting and select boot to command prompt only, you'll
need to type DOSSTART in order to access you CD-ROM.
Hope this helps.

Mark, in your Windows directory there is a file called dosstart.bat.
You must put the mscdex command line here.  Win95 will read this file
any time it reboots into ms-dos.  As for GP2, there is a utility to use
the game without the CD in the drive at several GP2 sites.  One I know
of for sure is at HCE GP2 Homepage at http://www.walkin.nl/gp2/
