V5 owner thinking of switching to GTS

V5 owner thinking of switching to GTS

I've been thinking of replacing my V5 5500 with a GTS based board.   I
really like the AA capabilities of my V5 but I wonder if I wouldn't miss it
if my framerates are "considerably" higher.   Who's converted from V5 to GTS
and been happy or regretted it?

 P3 1ghz
Asus P3V4X
128 pc133
TB Montego A3D sound
V5 5500 AGP

Also, I've read a number of things about the P3V4X having fits with
Geforce2 cards because of an incompatability with Via and 4x AGP.   Any
stories for me...?

TIA

I went V3>GF2>V5>GF2
With much better Nvidia drivers availalbe now I'm happy with the GF2
and don't really miss the FSAA on the V5. I find high res is better
than 800x600 and FSAA.

The FSAA with a v5 is better than with a GFII?
FSAA (on my GFII) looks great, but I don't use it since it drags the
fps down too much for me.

Absolutely. BUT I just switched to a GF2 Pro anyway. I would rather
have the framerate at hi-res than the FSAA w/lower FR and lower res.

Ditto!! 2 thumbs up & 2 Big Toes up for GF2 Pro <g> Thom_j.

Exactly. 2X FSAA on a V5 has a negligible impact on frame rate and  is
a much better looking method than the GF2 method. I don't use FSAA on
the GF2 at all. The GF2 strong hand is it's ability to run games good
at 32bit and high res, and of course it's T&L.

GPL won't get faster, but pretty much everything else will.  Maybe not by as
much as you'd expect though.  Games that support Hardware TnL (now know as
Hardware Vertex Processing) will see a big fps jump, but older games might
be just a bit faster, or the same.  I don't suppose you are stinking rich
are you, because a GeForce 3 is supposed to have really fast 4xFSAA, way
faster than anything else, so if you want speed *and* FSAA that would be the
ultimate card right now.

I had a V5 and sold it for a GTS.  I'm delighted with the card overall, but
I do have lots of programs that use Hardware TnL, and you might not have.
Plus when I had a V5 there were driver problems, which I'm reliably informed
are now gone, so my opinions may not mean alot on this subject :)

I have the P3V4X, and the switch to a GTS has been nothing short of a
nightmare.  FSAA makes it lock up...sometimes.  D3D doesn't work on
all games.  GL is actually faster than D3D in some, but not all games.
People tell me, "oh, you have one of those...." and then say yes, you
can make it work.  However, I haven't found a good combo yet of
Detonator driver and VIA chipset driver.  BTW, put the same GTS in my
son's machine, no problem out of the box with a different mb.  I
bought the card primarily for racing.

Bad to realize that you have spent 175 for a card, then to realize you
need to shell out another 125 or so for a different mb.  Your mileage,
however, may vary.  Check alt.comp.periphs.videocards.nvidia for more
information.

Yes it is.

That's the beauty of the V5. The 2xFSAA option doesnt't drag down the
framerate that much and looks spectacular. In GPL i run at 1024x768
with 2x and it's great. On N4 I have to tune down to 800x600 with 2x,
but even without FSAA I couldn't do better than 1024x768 anyway, and
then the jaggies are a pain :)

2X is ok, but it's certainly not spectacular. It also depends on the
game, but after a few days of the GF2 I am finding  I don't miss the
FSAA at all. I'll take speed over FSAA anyday.
